This is a historic site linked to the Battle of Franklin during the War between the states. This is also the home site of Carrie McGavock known as "The Widow of the South" and the main character of the book by the same name. The house was used as a field hospital during the battle. Many men died there. On the morning of December 1, 1864 the bodies of four Confederate generals killed during the fighting, Patrick R. Cleburne, Hiram B. Granbury, John Adams, and Otho F. Strahl, lay on Carnton’s back porch. The back porch is seen in the photo.
