Has any Canon P&S owners used the DiCAPac underwater housings? For $29, they're pretty cheap. I have a A590 IS and am just looking to take some snorkling snapshots.

I'd appreciate any comments from those who have used the bags. Do they really keep water out? I'm also concerned that I won't be able to turn the camera on and off since the button is recessed and it might be tricky turning it on through the thick plastic casing.

Thanks.

I'm not a fan of these baggies at all. Good for keeping the rain and snow off but submerging? Not so much. And, yes, the buttons are hard to deal with, too.

Check for a Canon housing for your model (I can't remember if there is one for the 590 or not).

Sorry I couldn't tell you cheap was good here ;)

Don't do it unless you hate your camera.

Canon doesn't make a waterproof case for the A590, but others do. Here's one link I found;

Of course, it cost 10x what the cheap plastic bag would cost.

Thanks for the link, Dennis. It's hard to rationalize paying so much for a cheapo camera like the A590. Maybe if I had a G10 or something nicer, I'd consider something like this.

Sounds like the Dicapac's are pretty crappy, but has anyone had positive results at all?

FWIW you will always pay more for the housing than for the camera ;)

My housing for the 40D is about $5000 and a less expensive choice still starts about $1500ish or so :D

It's just one of those things when you want to take a camera underwater.

I used one in Hawaii with my SD800. Yes it kept my camera dry but it was hard to use any of the settings so I set everything including the zoom for my next underwater adventure before I went back in the water. Unfortunately I didn't get any great pictures which was not the housings fault, it was windy and the water just wasn't crystal clear so I deleted them. Seriously if this is a one time snorkeling adventure then just be sure you test it before going in. I put tissue inside to make sure there was not even a drop, however I never felt comfortable with this and chose not to use it again on my last trip. I will however mention that it is a great item to have around the pool or if your going to your kids sports event and it may rain then yes buy it. Good Luck
