View Full Version : DOF and close up shots lens? (Figurines)

I like messing around and taking shots of my figurines. I only have a couple that are over a foot tall. The standard 18-55mm lens does some nice close up shots of the figurines, but I need a better DOF for that close up. The short DOF is nice for some shots, but in others I rather not have it. Any suggestions on lenses(Macros?) or just technique?

To increase you DOF,. all you need to do is stop the lens down some more...
Try shooting with your aperture set to f/8, f/11 and f/16 ;)

Well, don't know that I'd elevate Power Rangers megazord transformers to "figurines." But, to follow Cyber's previous post your going to need LOTS and LOTS of additional light sources, softened or diffused to prevent reflected highlight hotspots, to have enough light to stop the lens down to f/11-f/16. Get more light. Soften it. Stop lens down. Have fun. J.

Yeah, I noticed how dark it can get. I left all my lamps up at college. The Zords may not be quality figurines, but I don't feel like getting more finger prints on my limited edition Eva Unit-01. :p

Wow,. you work fast! :)

This one looks a little underexposed,. maybe about 2/3rds + Exposure Compensation would help?

On the other hand with the white parts and flash you'd be walking a fine line between underexposed,. and blown highlights..

Just a little more and some of the white parts do become blown out. I could probably do some brighter lighting aimed properly to get the right effect.

I'll have to start a thread of my figurines over in the photo sharing section. ;)
