Here's my mini black and silver...his name is Alfie but the neighbors call him "Satan Pup" because he growls and lunges at them!

I'd like to see some more Schnauzer pics if you guys have them!

My mums Giant, Daegan, when he was a pup. He is just over a year old now and is full height and weighs about 6 stone but the mentality hasn't changed a bit :|

This wasn't taken with my canon but this is our old Standard bitch Heidi, sadly she passed away last year. She is still, and always will be, missed terribly.

In this picture she is watching and waiting for my mum to come back in from the car. Even though she was only 6 feet away and never out of Heidis sight she would be greeted like she'd been away for a week when she went back to that gate. She was such a happy and loving little soul.

Deagan is going to give you lots to think about.. the Giant, a wonderful revearing breed!
As for Heidi, she looks like a kindred soul. Makes me sad thinking about the eventual passing of my own Cagney (soon to be 9..still full of life..sensitive and outstanding in everyway). The Standard Schnauzer- I think I will always want one...they are a handful though!!

Beautiful Airdale hedu! I think if you raised a Airdale you should have no problem with the Standard Schnauzer. I find my dog to be completely loyal and very loving- very intense dog with immense character. These working class dogs are very active and very athletic!!! At the dog park Cags is probably 2nd fastest dog on most days. People are amazed by her agility...... Anyhoooo...just me bragging about my dog again!!!

Thanks, your Yorkie's haircut does look like a schnauzer's! Alfie's hind legs are pretty powerful for a little dog...I make sure to cover the most important area before I let him boost off of me like that ;) Made the mistake of not covering up only once...lesson learned!

Speedsix, growing up, I had a schnauzer named Dixie too. :-) The picture of Dixie has a different tone to it. Looking at the properties it was shot at 119mm, so I assume you used the Sigma 70-300 lens. But it was shot at ISO 1600 F5.6 @ 1/60sec. Did you use a flash too or do something to it in photoshop to it? Thanks.

You are right, I used the Sigma 70-300. I believe the only lighting was natural light coming from a window, the flash was killing the shot so I had to bump up the ISO to negate using the flash. The post processing done to it was slightly extensive, I had to rush the shot because she never will stay completely still like that! I do it all in Lightroom, adjusted temperature and saturation, a few minor other tweaks....the image looks as I remember the scene, not really going for an overdone look, trying to keep it natural.

Was your Dixie the same colors?

Our Dixie was salt & pepper but much more salt (silver). I would post a picture but that would require going through many old photo albums and wrestling with a scanner. That is one of those on the to-do list that I never find time to actually get to. I know what you mean about always moving around, none of our schnauzers have ever sat still. I attached a similar picture I took a couple years ago of one our schnauzers. Unfortunately, with a flash. (And one day I will get better at fixing dog blue eye.)

Thanks for the info on the how the picture was shot. I agree with always trying to use natural lighting but I still try with a flash when necessary so I don't miss a shot. It may not be my favorite picture with a flash but then I still have the memory. Thanks again for the info.

No problem on the info, for sure use the flash to capture those shots! I was only messing around really working with my camera to try and figure out some lighting combos and just happened on that shot.

Alfie is beautiful.

Looking at all the pictures that were posted, you can definitely tell who bought their dog from a bona fide breeder and who got their's from the local mall pet shop. Shame on them for calling the doggie in the window a Schnauzer. It's a major insult to the breed.

My family has always has black, giant schnauzers. Unfortunately, our last companion of 9 years had past last August.

After searching around, we finally got two new pups. This makes a total of 5 giants we've owned.

Anyways, here is a picture of one of the boys at ~ 9 weeks old.

Wow! He is adorable! We have a Standard (above) and I'm considering getting a giant when we get a house in the next few years (yard space). The Standard needs quite a bit of exercise but I don't know about the Giant. Do they need as much training as people say? Are they as stubborn as the Standards (with twice the weight)? Would love the hear, if even just a little, of your experience :)

PKmode
17th of April 2012 (Tue), 13:44
Thanks.

Well, I would say they are stubborn but also very intelligent. Training is key like with any breed but their intelligence will more than make up for any short falls. You have to start to train them young and with positive reinforcement. You are right in thinking they will certainly need some space. In fact, my parents house is quite large and every one of them has the urge to run laps around the downstairs like marathon runners. Just a natural instinct I guess. We've had good luck with the breed and love them all to death. One downside is the shorter life span which is common among large, pure bred dogs. We have yet to have one make it to the age of ten, :(. You get so attached to each one like it is a member of the family so it's tough in that regard. All in all, I think the fact that we have had as many as we have over the past 25yrs speaks for itself. They are great and each one has a character of their own. Irreplaceable.

seoul4korea
17th of April 2012 (Tue), 15:35
Agreed on the early training, we got ours as a puppy to grow up with my daughter and it's helped a huge amount with being careful not to go crazy around kids and such. While I have a mini it isn't exactly the largest or biggest dog to fend off lol, what caused your standard schnauzers to pass so early?

PKmode
17th of April 2012 (Tue), 15:58
Our's were all giants, not standards. The larger breeds tend to have shorter lives in general. 1st one had seizures, 2nd one had a digestive problem and the last one ended up going downhill in about 6 months after getting horrible cancer at age 9. Let's hope these two live full and long lives.

klimraamkosie
17th of April 2012 (Tue), 16:07
The bad part about owning pets. They will eventually leave :(

Ok, the Standards are considered one of the most healthy with a lifespan of 15. But we're aiming for 20! ;) Oldest dogs have reached almost 30! :)

They must ingest a crazy amount of food. My Standard eats 2 lbs a day and still wants more!

I didn't know their lifespan was that short. Good to know. And yes, mine is a lap runner as well! Ran circles around a lab at the dog park this morning forever. :)

Beautiful photos! I had a Mini Schnauzer who was a salt/pepper. She was great to the family but since a 6 month old pup when we got her did not like anyone else as much as I worked on that. I had her when I was in my teens and she was a fantastic 4H dog. She won her agility and I put her in the big dog agility even though her shoulder size should have had her in small dog. She won it though as she was just a little springboard. She could even do the long jump. It was pretty cool! SIP Sadie. I miss you! Loving seeing everyone else's Schnauzers!

The boys are growing quickly and have now had their ears cropped. They are about 19 weeks now at Sampson is a little behind Hugo in weight (54 lbs vs 59 lbs). I don't get to snap many shots of them but here are a few.

Ok I need a little help for something that may seem real easy but I finally have some pictures of my little one to post but can't figure out how to post them from my mac. I tried the "insert picture" button within the text box but I don't have a url or website where they're stored. Pointers?

When you create a new post (or reply) there should be a box underneath the big text box called "additional options." Add files there.

Great photos. I esp like those there Albert. Here's my contribution: My brother and his wife gave me this dog, it was too hyper for their likes. He's really tamed down a lot and I love his personality. He is always just looking so happy!
He's 1/2 schnauzer 1/2 maltese. These are about 2 years old on my 50d.

Cool action shots.

If you want to have a laugh at the expense of my pup Sampson, he ran into a parked car the other week and I happen to catch it on iphone video. Poor guy got a black eye for the night and a small laceration but he's all healed up already.

I've been thinking about Schutzhund training myself. Are these for personal protection or for police work? What are the gun laws like in the area where you live, i.e. that you'd have to depend on the dog.

Ouch! Poor little guy :(
On the other hand, schnauzers are pretty tough. Must have left a dent in the car ;)
Good to hear that he's ok.

It's just for show/competition actually. Unless you're a police or military you don't practice protection work for any other purpose. You also need a special license to practice/compete.

Police/military work is mostly for german shepherds or malinois around here. Gun laws are pretty strict, unless you're a hunter you don't have a gun basically ;)

Yeah, Giants are tough SOBs. He actually busted the indicator on the Lincoln, which is a multi layered plastic lens. I felt terrible for laughing. He's a champ though.
