really a noob at editing (done in lightroom 2)

Too much contrast? Too dark? Too bright?, etc
and is the WB right on #2?

also I know the composition isn't the best but that's all I could pull off in a couple minutes.

honest c&c would be appreciated.

#2 is just charming!

Your biggest problem in both shots is getting control over the background. You have to take charge of your shoot and find appropriate lighting and backgrounds.

Be pro-active!

It looks like his face is distorted by using too wide an angle on your lens. Portraits look best with telephoto lenses and taken at a distance. In both cases, you have objects "growing" out of his head: the tree in the first one and the board in the second. It's a good idea to be mindful about this kind of distraction.

Yeah, I know. I need a fast prime. Looking for a 35 f/2 or maybe a 50 f/1.4
