All pictures and the display look like this, like a scrambled tv channel. The camera doesnt give a error message and resetting doesnt help (it did a year ago when the same problem occurred)
Canon helpdesk advised to remove the batteries for 15 minutes and if that wouldnt help sent it in for repair. Now Im hesitating to have this 3 year old camera repared becouse of the high costs.
Any ideas for an easy fix?
Thanks.

It looks like the ending of Kubricks '2001: an space odyssey'.

Perhaps the batteries are worn out and have stopped delivering full voltage?

Cheers, Zeke

Welcome to MY world...

you my friend have a broken CCD connector...

this hapenned to my A70 2 times... last time i got a dead pixel... yes... in 1 year I had 3 problems... and when i got the digi back, they repaired my ccd by turning off the dead pixel and have the others around it fill in the missing pixel... which didn't work in filming mode... I brought it back to canon a 4th time in 1 year and they replaced it with a A85... no charge, nothing!

Anywho, that's not the point... lol yeah you have a busted ccd connector... At this point because it's an old digi, i'd say scrap it and buy a new one...

Or open it up and try fixing it yourself :-)

oh... try hitting it on the side pretty hard, i found that bought me a couple months of extra usage! :)

oh... and after the repair, the ccd sensor just doesn't seem as good as it originally was....
pictures seem more grainy... weird!

get an A85!! :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried the new batteries, and tried hitting it hard (as hard as one would want to hit a gift from dear parents..)
But I guess this will be the excuse to look for a new camera, one that can do wide angles like the s60.

Solutions

Thank you for using one of our Canon products. It has been found, that in rare case, some of the CCDs, used in Canon digital camera and digital video cameras, have a problem that causes abnormal image output.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Canon will offer free repairs where an error is caused by this malfunction.
Canon would like to advise our customers of the details of this issue and our policy for handling it.
Problem details:
Among the CCDs used in the affected products, it has been confirmed that in extremely rare cases, under high-temperature/high-humidity environments, some of the internal wiring comes off.
If this defect occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD correctly when in shooting mode. This results in image abnormalities such as:

Images do not appear
Image colors are abnormal
Images appear distorted These symptoms can be confirmed on the LCD monitor. Solution:
We kindly request users who have confirmed these symptoms to contact the nearest Canon Service Centre.
Free repairs will be made for affected products in cases where it has been confirmed that the internal CCD wiring has come off.

Hi

Same thing happened with my sister's 3 yr old A60 - fixed by canon for free since it was a recall for the CCD block.
