Is it normal for videos to have flickering, especially in the shadows and backgrounds? It's very strange :(

I think that you may be seeing the 5D changing the aperture or something? I had the odd flickering with a video the other day, had a large light source in frame. I now lock the exposure, Just a thought.

Hi Echo, thanks yes that seems to cause a slight flicker too, I was talking about something else but unfortunately couldn't describe it very well :(
I think I figured out its not a problem with my camera though, the DPReview Samples do exactly the same thing (its like the background is moving/flickering if you really peek closely) but I suspect its a playback issue on my machine

are you watching it back at full resolution?
due to the data stream size what you may find is a slight flicker between frames becuse your pc doesnt have the resolving power to play back at full speed. the way to get round this is to use a proxy or down res your video to a more useable size
