Anyone have any luck finding a good deal on a Canon 580EX II, or 430EX flash? I spend most of my day shooting and have a difficult time keeping up with the buy/sell threads on this forum, they go so fast! Thanks.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that the value of these has gone up significantly in the last 3 weeks. When I first started looking (about 3 weeks ago), I saw a couple go on Ebay for $220, one on Craig's list for $225 & a few go on here for about the same (even as low as $200). I thought 'Ok...that must be the going rate...I'll get one in a couple weeks when I'm ready.

Well...now that I'm ready to buy, They've been going for no less than $270 or so on here, & on Ebay, I don't see them going for less than $290. On here, someone sold one for $235, which sold immediately, followed by everyone telling him he sold it for too little.

Seems they're VERY much in demand & everyone knows it...now the price has jumped. You really have to troll the classified here if you're going to have any chance of grabbing one...or pay around $300 on Ebay for a used 580ex...$400 for a 580ex II.

I've been watching them as well. You're lucky to find a used 580ex for $330.00 and used 580 ex II for $400. They do sell fast.

The price changes are probably a reflection of the Canon rebates expiring.

I was looking for a 580exII for a week and could never time it correctly, so I said screw it and got a new one from adorama yesterday.

I just won a 580ex on ebay for $320 to my door. It comes with a diffuser and looks brand new. That's a deal compared to what they have been selling for.

I hear you guys; I was thinking I was going to pay a little over $200 for a used 580ex, but now I realize I'm just going to have to bite the bullet & dish out around $300 one.

That's the way it goes....lol

It took me weeks and a lot of patience to grab an almost new 580 EX II here for $350 - They tend go away pretty fast.
But as I was in no hurry to get one (no professional urge), it was finally fun to try and grab the right one (maybe I'm saying this because I succeeded finally) :-)
Did not see a lot of bargains on Ebay either, and no refurbished on Adorama (430 EX only there the last I peeped).
Good luck.

The only used light bulb I will get is for off shoe remotely triggered flashes (my nikons).

My (purchased new) 580EXII that was less than a year old started to underexpose all of a sudden. Canon said it was absolutely fine even though I had had a CD filled with examples of serious problems. I got a brand new one as a replacement. Warranty is a lovely thing to have when it comes to any camera equipment.

$419usd (what a cheap deal) is still cheaper then $519cdn for a 580EXII.

i have been looking for either, they sell used for about $20 less than brand new ones, unless you get lucky, i think i will just buy a new one, wasted too much time trying to find a deal

I just got back from a local photo store... $300 for the 430EX and $500 for the 580EX II. I'm holding out. Going to run a search on local Circuit City's it looks like!

I need one for a model shoot at the end of the week though, so I need to act soon.

Is the only distance between the 580EX II and the 430EX II the distance in which the flash reaches?

From a simple search...

I have posted this before, but I just want to point out again that there are MANY MANY 580EX II features that are missing from the 430EX or 430EX II.

I may not use all of them now, but it sure is nice to know they are there if I need them one day.

Threaded PC socket (580EX II only)
External AutoFlash Exposure Sensor(580EX II only)

Control Wheel (580EX or 580EX II)
Pull-out catchlight panel (580EX or 580EX II)
Flash head tilts downwards (580EX or 580EX II)
Flash head swivels full 180° both left and right (580EX or 580EX II)
stroboscopic (MULTI) flash (580EX or 580EX II)
Master Slave Capability (580EX or 580EX II)
Flash exposure bracketing (FEB) (580EX or 580EX II)
High voltage input port (580EX or 580EX II)

Metal Hotshoe (580EX II or 430EX II only)
quick release mechanism (580EX II or 430EX II only)
silent recycle (580EX II or 430EX II only)
Flash Menu in Camera with 40D, 1D III, XSi, etc (580EX II or 430EX II only)

no need for an exII

I would have to disagree if it did not fit the buyers needs. I went for the exii for the extra features, one of which was the weather sealing. I put that flash through a rainy sunday parade a few weeks back and wasn't even concerned about the aftermath.
