I have been trying out a variety of programmes - mainly for enhancing digital photo images - adopting some - uninstalling others.

I am wondering to what extent this process of adding/deleting software is cluttering up the Registry leading, eventually, to a flaky system: my o/s is Windows XP.

When using Windows 98 I found it necessary to reformat the hard drive several times at intervals: this is quite a minor drama - or I found it so! I believe that with XP it is an even more formidable undertaking so I'm not anxious to get involved with that.

To what extent does defragmentation avoid the problem - or is a 'Registry Cleanup' programme the answer?

I do the registry Cleanup with Reg First Aid weekly. Add to this regular defrags and I'd be very surprised if you ever had any loss of performance

Registry Cleanup would be your best bet for keeping the Registry free of junk and clutter.

As for the disk defrag, this is something you should do on a regular basis if you are creating, updating and deleting files. Although installing and uninstalling programs does cause disk defragmentation, so do your other daily activities on the computer where file updating of any kind is involved.

Hi

Norton system works has all the tools you need to keep your machine in good condition, certainly works for me, bought it same time as Norton anti virus again essential (or similar program)

2 other progs i find are essential and really speed up the coputor are..

Adaware and Spybot. if your machine slows down just run these progs may well sort it.

You'll have a bigger problem if a lot of these programs were freeware or shareware as they often come with extra gifts. I'd also add something like Spysweeper and Torjan hunter to the list if you are in to using freeware. Make sure you have some kind of firewall monitoring traffic as well so you get warned if an unexpected application tries to talk to the net.

Basically the better and wider used a free application the more chance you have of it installing spyware and some spyware can be pretty nasty.
