Well done - now why didn't I think to start bartering?!?!?! I was happy to walk out with a crummy half price camera bag having payed £698.It's a fantastic piece of kit, and your right about there being a lot to learn - my main problem though is the obvious things - like not resetting ISO. I'm still producing lots of duff photographs, but now I take far more blame than the camera for when things go wrong :)

Early shots of my own (edited in photoshop - but not to the degree that my A80 shots required)

Very Nice Images. .
I sometimes just leave my camera on 400, or 200 ..
Depending on the day, if it's really sunny 100..
However, I always check the iso before shooting.

The first one would make a really good B&W photo.

The first one would make a really good B&W photo.

Actually the first one is almost like a pic where a lot of the colour has been photoshopped out already, if you know what I mean.

EDIT: Sorry, addressed this to wrong person - I see that you have edited the pic in question in PS Lucasdigital - did this include removing some colour?

I hope i can get some results like that within a week...i doubt it though....lol
Ive only ever used a point and shoot powershotA400 before. Can anyone advise......i only want to concentrate on full figure, half figure and the like...working indoors and outdoors. So what are the prime concerns i should read up on.What i mean is i dont need to bother with long exposures and high iso do i as my subjects will be still.Cheers.

Hello, yes!

In photoshop You'd create a duplicate B&W version and erase parts of the image that you want to be in colour so that coloured layer underneath shows through. You then make the B&W layer semi-transparent. This allows you to select that part of your image contains the most saturated colour.

It didnt quite work out, R1Kid is probably right about it making a better B&W, but sometimes the colours are just too nice to wash away.

Heres a similar treatment - using the Canon 50mm 1.8 prime lens I picked up today.

Lucasdigital,
Those are amazing! What lens did you use?
That second image may be a "tad" oversharpened though. There are a few white halos.

Your very kind!

The images where taken with the 18-55 kit lens. The uber-sharpness is pretty much down to my photoshop rather than photography skills. Your spot-on about the oversharpness - I think in the excitement I probably sharpened - resampled and sharpened again. I like Sharp, but my lovely new camera can do the lovely things with blur :)

When I first went from a point and shoot camera to DSLR, I had the habit of over sharpening my images too. Like you I sharpened, resampled, and then sharpened again.
Finally I learned the best method is to add a small amount of sharpening initially if the image was RAW, this is usually done automatically with the converter. Then, I only add more sharpening after I resize, or when I am going to print.
If the image was initially a jpg, and had in-camera sharpening, then I would only add more after resizing, or when printing, and even then it would be a smaller amount than above.

I still say that 18-55 kit lens is a darn fine wide angle lens, and your pictures prove it.

Excellent! You did a great job with the stock lens.
It goes to show that the photographer is way more important than the lens.

Hmm, you must be right-brained, or artistic then, because you've done alot better than most first-timers, or even most of us with experience.

it also goes to show that people write off the kit lens becasue it didn't cost $1000 and doesn't have a red ring.......
as you so rightly said .the best lens in the world doesn't make you a good photographer

The 2nd shot shows very good detail of the highlight. Did you make any adjustments to the original?

BINGO! I knew you had to be in the art field some way some how.
Most artists I know can pick up a camera for the very first time and take pictures that make experienced photographers' work look bad.

As far as the kit lens goes, I just had a very talented photographer send me pictures taken with the 350D kit lens, and the 85/1.2L lens and I honestly couldn't tell which was which. I'm sure at very large prints it would be obvious, but definately not at large web size.

I dont think artist make epxerienced photographers work look bad..:) I think every Photographers work has its own artistic way of shooting. It may look bad to other people but to some it may look good..:) For me good work or bad work i call it originality.. Regarding lens i dont think i would be able afford the L series hehhe..:) U have any suggestion regarding lens?

God Bless

Got mine a couple of weeks ago. Long way to go but I'm learning. I've learned a lot about the camera and photoshop in a short time :)
The kit lens works good for me - most of the time! I'm chalking up the soft shots to my inexperience. Also looking to get the 50mm f/1.8 since 90% of my shots are going to be portraits of the family. From what I've been reading this lens is good glass and cheap - $70-$80!
Here is one from my kit lens touched up a little in PS:

Steve, one word... WOW!
That is an incredible shot!

Zerobyte, I should have been more specific. I have artists friends who have no camera experience, and have gone out with a 2mp digicam and taken pictures that make mine look pretty crappy :)
