in the studio using flash heads should i set the colour temp higher than the 5200 that my 20d is set at ?would that warm the pic,s up a bit ?

Rob,
Best bet is to find out the colour temp used by the flash heads you have and just set you camera to this specific temperature.
For example, my Elinchroms output at 5500K so I can either dial that in, or just use the Flash WB preset. If I want more warmth or cooler I can adjust the set value to taste.
However, most of the time I shoot RAW anyway, so this issue goes away.

i belive mine are 5500 too so if i want to make the photos warmer in apperance do i just dial in say 6000 ,im in the ukand its winter so i and want to give the model a bit more coulor as i take the shots so its less messing about on the computer, i take your point on raw and hope to learn that later .

I used to think that if I shot Raw I didn't have to worry about setting a correct WB when shooting Raw. I was wrong. If you are going to be in any kind of mixed lighting, do a custom WB, especially if in a stationary situation where the lighting will remain the same. Trying to match mixed lighting to a canned WB can be very frustrating.
