I am old school and learning digital. One of the biggest problems I am having is the difference in time between when I click and what I get. Any suggestions?

"Shutter lag", the problem you are experiencing can be hard to get used to. If you are shooting action and need to get the shot as the "ball goes into the hoop", or something like that... Prefocus to remove some delay time and anticipate... Shoot just a bit early. It takes getting used to, but in time, you will become accustomed to the shutter lag.
Others may have more suggestions.

Thanks - I was just trying to take pictures of my grandkids and about the time I would get them to look and shoot, they had turned by the time the shutter went. :(

The prefocusing and then waiting for the shot you want can really help.

I am sure it will. And someday I will learn patience LOL

Manual focussing on a point can also help. In fact, the less you let the camera do for you, the faster it'll respond. That includes metering.

I did not realize that you could manually focus it. I have a Power Shot SD880 IS.

Not with the SD880, but you can use Focus Lock with the same effect.
