Hi, I'm new to this forum and new to photography in general. I just purchased a Canon A590IS. It came with a 32 mb SD card. Now I know what a megabyte is and a gigabyte, so I'm not totally illiterate with computers. I have no idea what an SD card is or the other numerous different lettered cards that go in a camera. Or what they stand for.

So before I go and waste money, my question is what type of cards do I or should I get for this camera.

I plan on just doing some basic photography as a hobby to help heal through major surgery on a broken leg. I had a rod inserted in my leg, they want me to start putting some weight on it now. I cant work for a while so I figured photography to keep me sane right?

Thank you in advance for any advice or help!

This camera takes both SD cards (limit 2gb, I believe), and SDHC (high capacity) which can be 4gb, 8gb, or higher. I use 2gb SD cards (which will hold 200 or more images at the highest setting), and 4gb SDHC cards which will hold more 500 or more photos and more video (which takes up a lot of card memory). Both SD and SDHC cards are cheap and seem to be getting cheaper. I have 4 SD (2gb) and 2 SDHC (4gb) cards at present. Also important is to get a good set of rechargeable batteries. I carry 4 of these plus 2 regular AA's for backup.

Well David's got you all set up as to what you need to get started. Now, as for photography keeping you sane, actually it can turn you into a complete looneybird!;)

thanks for the replies!
I'm going to do a search to do some shopping for them.

Without me being a pain in the arse what is the difference between an SD and an SDHC, is it just the amount of memory they go up to?

And JustShootin', I'm already a looneybird so I guess I'll fit in just fine

SD cards are limited in how much data they can store, generally they max out at 2 GB. The SDHC (high capacity) can store a lot more, with current sizes around 32 GB max. Here's a link with a LOT more info, just kind of scan it for now, and use it for reference. Learn to Google things you have questions on, and you will be amazed at what you find out there.

J - You can find 4GB and 8GB cards for very cheap these days. Sandisk is currently having a rebate promo for these cards. I only run out of space because I'll take videos, and I'm terrible at deleting photos. I just recently took our A570 (older model) to Walt Disney World and I think I only had to change cards once throughout. I think I bought the card for under $10; there are specials all the time online.

The batteries are a bigger concern. I use Eneloop rechargeables - most folks on the DSLR side use these for their flashes. They can be found for less on Amazon.com and last a decently long time. I also don't use the flash on my camera rarely at all, so that helps with the battery life.

Get well soon!

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but when I saw the title I thought the lens add-ons would be discussed (found here (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=16336#SNAModelSuppliesAct)... the Wide and Tele converter lenses). Does anyone have any experience with them? Are they worth it?
