I walked around Tiffin, OH earlier today to try out the 20D and Tamron 18-270 I just purchased. Here are a couple shots I took:

Blue Heron watching for an intruder (this was taken from really far away):

Well, don't forget to leave the big city once in a while to see the "real" Japan....if it actually exists.

First try with the lens, you say? Well, no apologies needed! Plenty of birding togs on here will tell you that when the buggers aren't sat still in a tree, they're devilishly hard to photograph!!!

Just keep at it!

Ahh..another gaijin in Japan!
Whereabouts in Tokyo are you?
I lived in Ogikubo for 5 years, and I sometimes miss Tokyo.
Down here is a little slower pace of life!!

...The first one is a little old woman hard at work on a Sunday afternoon....

Just to add to B's shot from a few days ago, here's yet another old granny digging away to plant her crop of rice this year. It was about 44°C in the direct sunlight (about 111°F) and 60% humidity. But I watched while she finished off planting her "patch". Funnily enough, her husband was also watching while she finished off....

44℃ - crikey that's hot!
It's getting up there here, too, and I'm finding myself getting up at 5 or 6 am on my day off if I want to go outside for any length of time! Yesterday, when I went to the zoo, I was out of the house by 6:00 am.

RE: the above shot - great! I can't believe the husband was just watching her!
I bet she went home and cooked his dinner after that, too.

And here's another two from the same wander....freshly edited!

First is a famous samurai dude astride his thundering steed. All very "Last Samurai".....except Tom Cruise wouldn't have stood a chance against this dude.
As an aside, the samurai north of here were even warned by their leaders, "NEVER let a Satsuma samurai have ONE strike at you.....as you'll be dead before the second comes". The locals were trained in the art of a lethal withdrawal of the blade and killing stroke in one movement. Seriously scary!!! Thankfully, they're much more like Kitty-chan these days!

Second shot made me laugh. The old lady - bottom left - is scattering seed by hand....underneath an enormous motorway ("freeway") bridge. Old-meets-new.

Hot is what it is!!! But that's in sun. It was "mere" 34 in the shade

Oh and as to Mr.Old Lady....he did seem to have some serious hip-trouble if I'm honest. I just hope if I ever get that bad, I can be put out of my misery painlessly!!! Or have some "bionic legs" implanted....
I just couldn't cope if I couldn't get out taking pics without two walking sticks and a ton of painkillers.

Alright, we'll let him off then:)

Love the samurai - scary bugger!
I'm glad they managed to finish building the motorway - the countryside around here is full of huge pillars, but with no road on top. Just loads of pillars marching through the fields because they ran out of money and couldn't build the top!!

les_au - Havent spent much time in Mildura since I left after HS but it is a very senic little spot. Looking forward to spending some time there later this year.

I have a huge amount of history within a mile of my home, but for now I'll just show something which for most people will be unusual and interesting-but for me it is a part of daily life, a summer evening here in Portsmouth is incomplete without the hourly drone of the Hovercraft heading off on another sprint over the water to Ryde, although this image was shot in the depths of winter!

Great shot!
Last Christmas I was staying at my mum's house in Basingstoke, and we went down to Portsmouth to see HMS Victory. Unfortunately it was closed that day.
Probably should have checked that before I went!!
Anyway, we walked along the front, and then went up on the hills to an old fort which has a great view of the city. I can't remember the name though!

I've heard Shonan is great, although I've never been there myself.
You're right - there is a lot to do in Tokyo, but sometimes it's nice to escape the big city!!

BTW - have you found the "Anybody living in Japan?" thread yet?
Most of the guys and girls on there live in and around Tokyo.

Great shot and welcome Matt!!! Actually, I thought they'd stopped using the Hovercraft or am I thinking of the Dover-Calais crossing? Oh and like bmhana, I also have relatives near you so if I make it over there around Xmas I'll be bringing the family to Portsmouth....our kids haven't EVER been abroad, so seeing England and HMS Victory would, I think, blow their little minds clear outta the water!!!!

I was down at HMS Victory just a couple of weeks ago with my mother who was visiting from Australia, what I had never realised before is that entry to the dockyard is free although you have to pay to go on the ship. Anyway I didn't get much in the way of decent shots as it was a bit of a touristy day for us, but what I got I'll post sometime soon as it is almost exactly a mile from home.:)

Excellent! Looking forward to the pics. In fact, I "sent" a Japanses friend of mine to the UK (and Paris) two weeks ago and he was inside Victory too! Maybe, if you saw a funny-looking Japanese guy taking a LOT of pics, it was my chum.

And, @ cfibanez, welcome and thanks for the great shot.

Also, I don't think the New Forest is that far away, and it's beautiful there!!

Greetings folks - being an Aussie Im not sure what a mile is but I did walk away from my house!

Took this from an overpass on Route 316 (Kananana Dori) which is basically a loop road that starts and finishes in Shinagawa, Tokyo and runs through east Tokyo.

I overprocessed this photo a tad, haha, but kind of like the effect I ended up with.

That's pretty cool!
If you look back at the beginning of this thread, there are some guys who are worried about going out at night and getting mugged or worse.
One of things I like most about living in Japan is that you can go out any time of night and not really worry about anything bad happening.
The worst that would happen to me here is that someone will have nicked my parking space when I get back.

Hey Mocean, like that a lot. Care to share exactly what you did to get that finish?
Oh and what brings you to Japan? Holiday or work?
Hope to see more from you.
Oh and regarding "a mile": right now in Japan, "walking a mile" is the distance it takes for the sweat to actually reach deep into your undies, as opposed to merely trickling down your spine!

Thanks Skygod - I basically just upped the blacks by quite a lot in Lightroom to give it that CD cover look!

Im working here in Japan - doing a few various things but of course the bread and butter is eikaiwa edutainment. God is it almost Monday again!?

Hopefully a side project Im working on will take off and I will be able to hang up my pencil for good.

And I like your sweat-meter - makes sense! So I figure my place is about 3/4 of a mile from the station.

It's a great finish! I love it when blacks are that dense.
As to Eikaiwa, without it I'd have to move back to the UK....and that'd really suck!:(
Now, where did I leave my comedy pirate's parrot and alphabet cards....?
:lol::lol::lol:

EDIT: What? You didn't get mugged while sipping beer? Can I add to my "that'd really suck" comment? Moving back to the UK where I couldn't wander around without thinking twice about safety, while carrying Canon gear and drinking a beer would be enough to push me into the 666th layer of the abyss!

My undies are sweaty after just walking a few minutes outside, let alone a mile!
I just came back from Kumamoto castle, but I'm a bit disappointed as there was a crappy grey sky again!! I even got up at 6am to get there before the crowds. That didn't work out though as every one else had the same idea, too!
There were a lot of girls kitted out in hot pants today, so it must be a special day. Or maybe it's just because it's bloody hot. I might have to give it a go - buy some little pink hot pants and go for a stroll downtown - see if it helps the sweat! I'd probably get arrested though.
I should stop now - I think the heat is going to my head:o

Unfortunately this wasn't by my home, I was in a different Provence but i did walk about a mile for it, after spotting off the roadway, i had to get out of the car and walk along a river bank to get to the location for the picture.

Could probably use with some cropping, but i haven't done much in the way of editing the image.

Technically, you're "banned" for the driving part!!!!
But since it's not actually up to me, I'll just say, "WELCOME TO THE THREAD!"

Regarding your pics, those are really cool-looking bridge supports aren't they.
I always think no-bridge-bridge-supports look kind of sad.

Hope to see more from you, especially if you can only walk/cycle before taking some pics.

I'll try to refrain from the driving part next time, i should be moving closer to a more populated area soon, so hopefully i'll get some down town shots for this thread, till then I may take a walk and see what i can find with the farms near me

The weird thing about those bridge supports is that there were no roads even remotely going in their direction.

Spooky!

Oh and if you re-read the earlier posts (from #1) you'll see that the idea is to really "look" at what's all around you. Not just because it's somewhere you're planning to go to take photos....

I'll leave you to ponder a while and hope to see more pics from you soon!

I thought it added more to the photo since the real main focus was on the ducks (Mallards) since I walk past that dock quite a few times a day and that was the first time I had seen them out sunbathing together like that.

IMHO, you could crop out more from the bottom as I feel the path nearest to camera somehow looks too "new" while the gateway and crooked door look so old.

Excellent pics here.

Love the colours and clarity in all your images.
Strangely enough, I also quite like the flair in the church image - it sort of adds to the grandeur, IMO.

Keep 'em coming, and keep walking to take photos!

Don't know how you (or the locals) cope.

Here, it's hot 'n' humid from early July to mid-September, but as I mentioned above, the actual rains have stopped now, so at least we can dry off a little.....well, except for all the sweat that runs down your back into your waist-belt.

Funnily enough it doesn't rain all the time just enough to keep the potholes filled with water.. It varies all the time.. Sometimes it rains in the early morning until around midday, other times in the late afternoon and through the night.. When it's not raining the humidity is sky high.. When it chucks it down it really chucks it down.. Luckily it's still warm whilst it's raining..

By late October the Big Dusty sets in.. Cooler temperatures, clear skies with hardly any clouds and dust with more dust.. Ask any housekeeper which season they hate,,they'll all say the Dry Season.. Last Dry Season there wasn't a drop of rain or hardly a cloud from early November until late March..I love the Dry Season,, very low humidity with daytime temps around 25-28 degs.. Nights in Vientiane can get down to 8 degs and in the north of Laos 0-2 degs..

Worse time of year is April and May when tempertures soar into the 40s and humidity over 80%.. In June the rains are welcoming..

Thanks for the compliment, I thought the lens flare kinda worked as well, I also got a pic of the church on the other side with the sun right above the left steeple but it didn't turn out well, i suppose i'd need an ND filter for that maybe.

And off topic, Skygod everytime i see your avatar, i always hear "Roughriders!" in my head from a comedian, can't remember his name though.

I had no idea what you meant, but it sounded a bit rude, so I looked it up.
Do you mean a TV series from the late-90s? Cast 'n' crew here! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118453/)

These are city folk but have a close look at the image you'll see they are mainly young people..

These rice fields belong to the village where everyone does their share.. The harvest is divided up between the villagers and I think a small amount of the harvest goes to the government as tax.. Even in Vientiane there is still a strong village system..

When the Pathet Lao took control in December 1975 they tried to introduce a commune system of agriculture like in China and Russia but it didn't work.. The Lao have had community rice fields for centuries where everyone does his/her share and the harvest is divided up.. A certain amount is kept in storage for the next year in case of a poor yield or is sold for village income..

Hey Bunny!
Great to see you in the Eco-thread, and a great shot too....
Can you tell us more about your comment? For example, why would people take their rugs to the place you photographed? Is it a traditional thing?

Bunny
1st of August 2009 (Sat), 09:42
It's a traditional thing. In the old days there were not so many commercial laudrys around, so on some sunny summer day people took their rugs, a brush and soap and washed them on the lake shores and river banks. That tradition has then evolved to these rug washing places of today.

Nowadays these places are mainly used by elderly people and because it's free. Well I guess the people using these places also like the experience. Younger people seem to prefer taking their rugs to a laundry.

Edit.
Wikipedia (http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiedosto:Mattolaituri.jpg) has a picture of a platform-style version and maybe a reason someone might want to consider using one of these places.. :D

At a friend's request, I've turned it into a blog. Right now I'm way behind getting the photos up and commenting on them, the focus of which is on the post-processing I do. Would you mind if I posted the link in this thread?

Simon,

My sincere condolences to you as well. Best of luck with your school. I am hoping something will come to fruition for me in the next few weeks, but I've enjoyed having some time to myself.

My blog was something I started to make use of the images I was making. I broke a rib last weekend, so I haven't been out since last Monday (when I figured out it wasn't healing quickly.) But I've still got a good backlog of images to include, so there will continue to be new content for a while. And by the time I run out, I hope to be healed enough to get out with my camera again. Prior to my injury, I walked the same 3-mile loop every day. At the furthest part of the loop, I captured images of two different structures/objects. Each day I captured the same things - just at different times during the day, under different lighting, etc. My blog is as much a record of each image as anything else, but at a friend's request, I also comment on all the post-processing I do on each image. I am a rank amateur in Photoshop, so there are no tricks to be learned here, but combining the shooting with the post-processing, I hope some will find it unique:

http://mitsu13gman.wordpress.com/

Two completely unrelated images are below. These are of a motorcycle I found while on my way to my usual spots. I'm not normally a fan of the Harley-Davidson style of motorcycles, but I'm a big fan of steampunk-themed art and had to capture this. The first is just the overall bike to show some of the work that had been done. The second is a detail of the "spine" on the fuel tank, which I then used some of the current over-post-processing techniques on to make it more gritty:

Excellent pictures and I have to say that I need to see both shots to really understand the second one, as it's so surreal on it's own.
But what I find really interesting is the (BMW) Mini Cooper behind the bike: a real contrast between the excruciatingly refined by high-tech and globs of corporate money, and the utterly re-worked by hand....and perhaps a few less dollars?
;)
Amazing stuff....
Keep it coming!!!

Okay, to reverse the order from my last post, first the detail, then the whole object:

For those who watched the "Great Biker Buildoff" series on Discovery, I'm pretty sure this is one of the bikes Russ Michell at Exile Cycles in Australia built for the show. Again, I'm not normally a fan of this style of bike, but I love Mitchell's minimalist style, and I had a lot of fun post-processing the front wheel, so here's the whole bike to give you some context:

Thanks man, that's the beauty of Nantucket's infamous Fog, lol. Plus I have a couple others I'm processing since I took about 10 shots trying to get it to where no cars were at the bottom of Main Street, which is difficult when everyone is out roaming the streets.

Just discovered this thread and I'm about half way through it so far but I feel the need to reply, so here goes.

I'm another Brit joining in hopefully on a reasonably regular basis, I'm often found walking round my local town, camera in hand and normally take rubbish shots for me to play around with in GIMP so that I can master one or two techniques to improve my overall PP knowledge. Now of course I also try and take creative shots as well with my main interests being sports and am often found at local football (soccer), rugby games or on the local golf course togging willing victims ;) but togging sport often involvers the use of an engine! Not allowed in this thread I hear you say! Yeah, I know so you will hardly ever see anything sports related from me in here

So onto today then, I was walking around my local green, we have greens as well as parks over here, greens are normally quiet areas without the usual play equipement you find at parks, so there is a distinction. Greens are also quit often nature friendly, you know they only cut the grass twice, maybe three times a year etc with only a few benches scattered around in secluded and often shady (from the sun) locations.

Now, this green I was walking on is very old and is surrounded by some lovely old buildings and from where I entered the green I could see that a chap was painting this beautiful old house, after walking across, soaking up the afternoon sun and general peace and quiet of the area, I asked the owner would he mind me togging him whilst he painted. He had no objections and here is the result. Sorry for waffling on ;)

This was a drive to take a walk at the Yorktown battlefield.

This first shot is of a monument to the surrender of the British forces by there commander Earl Cornwallis, and it reads as follows.

At York on october 19 1781 after a siege of nineteen days
by 5500 American and 7000 French troops of the line 3500 Virginia militia
under command of General Thomas Nelson and 36 French ships of war
Earl Cornwallis commander of the British forces at York
and Gloucester surrendered his army 7251 officers and men
840 seamen 244 cannon and 24 standards
to his excellency George Washington
commander and chief of the combined forces of America and France
to his excellency the Comte De Rochambeau
commanding the auxiliary troops of his most christian majesty in America
and to his excellency the Comte De Grasse
commanding in chief the navel army of france in Chesapeake

This is a picture of the Moore House that is located about 1.5 miles from the monument above where Lord Cornwallis would submit general terms of his surrender to General George Washington.

Wonderful addition with a ton of history! Thanks for that one.
As a question from an ex-pat Brit. I'm a little confused about the whole "USA v England" thing in the 18th century - it's not the kind of history taught in schools in the UK....of course! ;)
So, did the British technically "surrender" or was it more about "withdrawal back to England"? It's just that I always thought of "surrender" as a term that's used by the defenders of, say, a castle under siege, or a fortified town or city being attacked. The defenders give up and say, "we surrender!"
But surely, the USA-people were the defenders, so the Brits should be recorded as saying, "fair enough....you can keep your country, and we'll bugger off, back to England".
So....how's it recorded over there?

As an aside, this kind of thing interests me, as "history" seems like such a loose and fluid recording of what people said and did.
For example, here in Kagoshima, in 1862, a Brit who'd been sliced up by some samurai, was avenged via a load of warships bombarding the city.
The Japanese call the attack on the Brit The Namamugi "Incident".
But really, we'd call it The Namamugi "Murder".
[Namamugi is the name of the village where poor ol' Charles Richardson was sliced up]
It seems to me that history is written according to the views of those writing it.
Over to you....

Thanks for the welcome, you probably know there are a lot of historic old buildings in the area if you have relations here, I'll add a few more when I get round to togging them properly.

I can often be found up at the glider club at New Buckenham togging the gliders and general goings on up there, I've even been offered free flights to tog but I'm not the best flyer with planes with engines on let alone ones without engines so up till now I've kindly declined to offers.......maybe one day I will be brave and take up their offer.

In the meantime here is another one from yesterday taken from the same green. The green is called Fair Green and it is historically the home of the village fair before Diss became a market town. It was home to travelling fairs of yesteryear and is still the current site for the modern day equivilent. These cottages show their age but still look lovely and homely. Sorry about the lighting in this as it was really bright, almost harsh sunlight.

ok everyone - the planet has been saved. I walked my mile, took my photo from atop a frozen Lake Ontario - one of the Great Lakes, though I say it is rather mediocre now.... As you can see I left footprints to prove I walked. I live in Toronto, Ontario and had to wait for the lake to freeze over or walking my mile would have gotten me rather wet.
As the snow attests, it took me a while to get back home (it's summer now).

It was a surrender at one battle:

From Wikipedia:

(full article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Yorktown )

The Siege of Yorktown or Battle of Yorktown in 1781 was a decisive victory by combined assault of American forces (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/Continental_Army) led by General George Washington (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/George_Washington) and French forces (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/France_in_the_American_Revolutionary_War) led by General Comte de Rochambeau (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/Jean-Baptiste_Donatien_de_Vimeur,_comte_de_Rochambeau) over a British Army (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/British_Army) commanded by General Lord Cornwallis (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/Charles_Cornwallis,_1st_Marquess_Cornwallis). It proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/American_Revolutionary_War), as the surrender of Cornwallis’s army (the second major surrender of the war, the other being Burgoyne (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/John_Burgoyne)'s surrender at the Battle of Saratoga (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/Battle_of_Saratoga)) prompted the British government to eventually negotiate an end to the conflict.

...

With the Allied artillery closer and more intense than ever, the British situation began to deteriorate rapidly and Cornwallis asked for capitulation terms on the 17th. After two days of negotiation, the surrender ceremony took place on the 19th, with Cornwallis being absent since he claimed to be ill. With the capture of over 8,000 British soldiers, negotiations between the United States (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/United_States) and Great Britain (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/Great_Britain) began, resulting in the Treaty of Paris (http://photography-on-the.net/wiki/Treaty_of_Paris_(1783)) in 1783.

Hey there Sundowner....I'm really looking forward to it - but my waistline isn't! I've lost (without even trying) about 20lbs since moving to Japan 5 1/2 years ago....and I expect that 6 days around Christmas at my parents' house will put most of it back on again!!!!

Meanwhile, that's such a "classic" English shot, methinks. It's that kind of effortlessly historical street that Japan is sorely missing.

:lol::lol::lol:

I've been off working on my photo project, so I haven't been around these parts as much as I'd like.

Interestingly enough, I actually found the gentleman who owns this bike and got to talk to him a bit. The only thing keeping it from 100% legality is the lack of a rear-view mirror. You can see the front brake rotor in the detail shot, and the rear drive sprocket for the belt is also the rear brake disk. It's 100% safe - the guy who builds these bikes is obsessed with cleanliness and having everything hidden.

I actually asked the owner (when I sent him the pics) if I could do a more formal shoot with him and his bike. I haven't heard back yet, but hopefully I can make something happen.

As to the sign, this part of the city has more bars/pubs/clubs per unit area/capita than anywhere in the US other than San Francisco. Thus, it's an admonition to those walking with alcohol, not driving - this sign would be backwards to traffic on this side of the street anyway. We don't have any open areas like New Orleans where you can walk around outside with a drink.

To keep up with the themes here, here's another image I made on my nearly-daily photo walk:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2912/coolgate001102.jpg

I used some of the same abusive post-processing techniques on this one as I did on the bikes, just pushed a bit harder. I saw the gate as I was walking and it just had a texture that I loved, and I couldn't help but feeling like some caged animal (or person) had beaten their way out of it. It had this great feel that I thought would look good, so I took a couple different viewpoints and this one, cropped square from its original portrait, was my favorite.

By-tor - the colors in your skies are STUNNING! I assume a circular polarizer?

Snydremark - I've spent a little time on the left coast, but never that far north - what's the peak in the background?

skygod44 - I love the post-processing on the father-son image. Selective color seems to be a taboo these days, but by going sepia on the toning, I think it gives it a unique feel.

Sundowner - as a lifelong US-dweller, the architecture in your images is so different from anything I've seen here. Your last image has a great depth and texture to it that really calls attention to the uniqueness of your country's cityscapes.

Here in J-land, selective colour is still rarely seen. But I was wary of doing a full-on version for my clients. So I used an "Aged-Script" in the GIMP prior to adding sepia to really throw them off, just in case their regular studio tog sees the picture....

As I said in my post, I really did abuse the post-processing on that image, but I was planning on it when I made the original capture.

How was your image received by the client? Not that I am the most knowledgeable photographer out there, but that's the first time I've seen selective color done that way. I may have to steal that the next time I'm looking to do something similar. I really want NIK's Silver Efx first, though.

Again keeping with the theme, here's another from me:
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6003/cruiseshipstitch.jpg

It doesn't show at first, but the post-processing on this was almost as intensive as my previous images. Reason being, I was stuck really close to the ship, and my widest lens was my 24-60, which on the 1D3 isn't all that wide. I decided to chance it and do a handheld two-image panorama. You can see some curving in the lines of the building in the foreground, but I was stunned that Photoshop did as good a job putting these together as it did.

I'm proud of this image only because I climbed 5 flights of stairs to get to my shooting position. Everyone else was shooting from the sidewalk to the left of my image, which meant there was a chain-link fence and some street lights in the middle of the image. I wanted mine cleaner, so I went scouting and ended up at the top of a parking garage.

Now I really need that 17-40!

I wanted mine cleaner, so I went scouting and ended up at the top of a parking garage. Now I really need that 17-40!
That's the idea of the thread....with a little effort, we can see more than the average photographer! Well done, you!!!!!
And as to the 17-40, the whole "ultra-wide issue" is one reason (among many) that might make me get a 7D (1.6x cropper) in the spring as opposed to waiting for the 1D4 - I just luuuuurve my 10-22 lens, and if Canon have cracked it with the new body, why change?
Catch you later!
:D

Two excellent sunsets - I've been commenting to myself lately that I haven't shot any yet.

I'm jealous!

Beautiful!
As with mitsu13gman, I keep telling myself I need to shoot some sunsets, but I work in the evenings so I can't!
I doubt I could find anything nearly as beautiful as those two shots anyway!!:D

thanks the sunsets have been spectacular here lately which has surprised me, or just that now that I see things as photos more often than I used to that they are just more noticeable
