Oh no! I can't stop looking at "Stranger" threads and projects on flickr now. Thanks. Might have to suck it up and start my own now. I've always been pretty shy and slowly getting better, and I'm sure this would help. I just hate all the attention I get when pulling out my camera.
P.S. Thanks for the idea and link! Really!
Justin you have a 70-200. You have no excuse ;)

I always try to avoid pictures of or with strangers in them. I think it's just a phobia I have about pissing people off. :o Time to get over it though considering most of my favorite photos are in fact in urban areas with strangers in them.
Thanks for pointing that out. Challenge accepted.
When out doing street photography, "candids" are part of the package and get some very interesting stuff! Sometimes it can be people you know, but often you spot a "moment" with strangers.
I recently started dumping my candid shots in a dedicated collection in my PBase host site gallery:

Ive used the 70-200 F4. Its tiny compared to the 2.8 version. You can be very stealth with it if you shoot from a distance. Most of my shots i was at least 50 feet away. I just took a quick picture and kept walking. Key is not to stop and take forever focusing. Just a quick snap and move. This way no one even gives it two thoughts to what you did.

True. Just gotta be quick about it i guess. Although the f/4 is smaller, it is still long and skinny (ha ha "that's what she said") and has that stupid looking huge hood.

I find the 85mm a great little lens to use for street walking. It's tiny on camera and perfect for shooting across the street. People often think it's a wide lens so they don't bother trying to hide or run away...

Got mine (85 1.8) used here in POTN...And I love it..it has been a learning curve for me as I generally dont use primes, but the images it captures make it well worth it...Right now I am keeping my nifty 50 on the body as a rule and trying to relearn that lens

Got the 85mm on the way for this exact reason. The Canon 85 plus Sigma 30 to be my 'kit' for street stuff I think, sometimes with something a little longer too (i.e. my very small 135mm or Sigma 150 depending on space).

Now that my cameras/lenses "work" a lot more than they used to, buying for fun seems daft...
Maybe the Canon 85 1.8 wouldn't make me feel guilty?

Nah, it sits in my saddle bag, I don't think the bouncing around would've done it. I think it was from putting it in my pocket while I rode around the foreshore.
Emailing Canon now. Hopefully it's cheap to fix!

You know, that sounds a bit of a warning as far as my biking adventures -- even though my aim is to pack a fairly bulky photo gear backpack, for now I've been carrying around my stuff in a "conventional" backpack. That's worked fine for the 5DC+24-105, because they stay attached and don't have anything to bang into. But in my outing yesterday I tossed in the 70-200 f/2.8 IS -- bigger and heavier, and not attached to anything. I'll have to consider -- how to protect the 5D/24-105 in case of a jolt until I'm ready for the big padded pack! I'd hate to break something!

I'm yet to take my SLR out. I think in a backpack all will be ok, just stick a jumper in there for some extra padding. The reason why the pocket was a bad idea is because of the amount of movement and tightening of the material. I learnt my lesson.

I do have some padding in my backpack but I'll have to give it a go-over for when I toss in a big heavy lens...

I have a Crumpler Keystone (a bit like one of the Crumpler Karachi Outposts I guess) that I find really comfortable riding around with. Largest kit I'll take in it is the 7D, 400 F/5.6, Sigma 150, 1.4x TC, and up to two small lenses (i.e. two small primes or a Tamron 28-75 and/or Tamron 11-18). That's at most (and a very tight fit), typical would be the Tamron 11-18, Sigma 30, and Sigma 150. I normally only take the 400 if I'm going for a ride down some dirt tracks and doing a bit of bird photography.
I'm currently attempting to find a more suitable bag for a smaller kit, a sling bag perhaps. Just for the 7D + Sigma 30 F/1.4 + Canon 85 F/1.8.
Honestly I don't think I'll be happy until I have bags suitable for each possible combination of lenses :)

I agree, in that more customers are more accepting of lower build quality than before - but at the same time, we're seeing odd pockets of "style" and "individuality" over here....
And when time, money and a few planning issues allow, we're going to start building our home using a mix of old and new techniques. Thus making our own little pocket of "unusual" down here in southern Japan.

Great stuff, Justin.
Natural, unposed, "real life" photography.
I love it!
And doing a quick check in the EXIF of the last photo, I see you shot at 200mm.
How do you find the 70-200 (I assume!) for street shooting?
I do more pro' work these days, so don't have much of an ache to shoot "for fun", but I'm recently re-inspired by several threads at the mo', and think my newly acquired 70-200 could be good to use?
Thoughts?

Thanks Simon! And yeah it was the 70-200mm f/4 IS. It's GREAT for street photography. It's tack sharp and the perfect focal range if you wanna keep your distance (which I did being new and not quite comfortable in peoples faces yet). Keep in mind however that your 2.8 is a decent bit heavier though. The 100mm Macro should be nice too if your shooting people on the streets and is lighter too. I'm looking at getting the Canon 85mm 1.8 in the near future which would be nice too I think.

Good to hear you're pleased with the 70-200 f/4...
I was using my 100-400L for street candids, but it's such a monster at 400mm it was nigh-on impossible to be discreet.
I've not tried the 100 macro for street before, so that's interesting.
And I'm also beginning to wonder about using the 50 or 30 and simply saying, "I'm a pro, and I'd like to take your picture" - especially to some of the older people I see here, whose faces are so full of character.
We'll see.....
Thanks again, catch you soon, and in the meantime, here's one from a while back which I shot in Miyajima, Hiroshima.

Nice shot! Perfect amount of depth.
The 50 is great when you can get close enough. If you are planning on getting close, and asking people, then take the 100mm with you too. I realized while going through my libraries that I actually haven't used it too much in public. Will have to give it a shot myself next time and post up some results.

Well, here, right now, we've a typhoon passing close by, so I'm stuck inside....and the wife is about to have our first baby (literally any day now!), so it's going to be a week or so before I can get out to "play"...but having said that, I'm pretty sure that if I'm carrying our baby, I'll get a LOT of opportunities to shoot strangers close up while doing a walk-about.
Catch you soon!

Nice thread everyone. This place is around the corner from my house, not a great photo but I took it quickly this morning and remembered this thread.
Its call Mt. Trashmore, yep hence the name it is a very very large mountain made from trash thats where the Trashmore name came in. This park has become very busy the past 30 years I remember when hardly anyone was at it and now its the local favorite jogging site fitness and playground for kids.

Lanscape photographs.
Perhaps I wasn't clear.....?
Oh, and if you still need a reason, it's because landscapes are VERY VERY BIG, while a photo is usually VERY VERY SMALL. So, for me, the impact is reduced so much as to make landscape photographs virtually meaningless, unless the photographer has captured something truly special!

All I meant was that it's so easy to get carried away with shooting landscapes, thinking, "Wow! I'm so talented". But most shots, IMHO are more of a "photographic record of somewhere pertinent to the photographer/local people/etc".
The art - again, "in my humble opinion" - is to take a landscape photo which moves anybody who sees it.
(Yeah, I know we can't please all the people all of the time, but maybe you get the gist?)
And that's a hum-dinger of a thing to do!
Cheers for now,

Hey Phil,
Great to hear from you in the thread.
I've been wondering (worrying?) a little what you've been up to, but with our Japanese Wedding coming up at the start of April, and our little 6 month-old suffering from his teeth popping out of his gums (with the inevitable result of us having no sleep), I've no had the chance to get out with my camera for ages - except for paid gigs.

Hmmm. Too many mean stray dogs in my neighborhood to think about walking anywhere. I learned this riding my bike where I live. While there are no real blocks to ride around (mostly large plats of land with double-wides on them) there is plenty of wooded lots and a couple of hay fields. Maybe I'll strap on my taser one day and work up the courage to ride amongst the boxers and pit bulls that roam the neighborhood.

Hey Simon, I have worked my way through the whole thread. Fantastic idea and some interesting images (and insights into, perhaps, misapprehensions about Japan).
Do I qualify? My somewhat irregular commute by bike wont start until the days are lighter longer - 25 miles (40Km) each way in a rather sedate 1 1/2 hours. I don't like the dark roads and prefer better weather. So, I offer holiday images. Yes, I admit it, I do drive to my destination (approx 750 miles) but when I arrive I park up and it's bike only (or walking to local shops) for 10-14 days until I leave to go home.

And if you're near Basingstoke, you must know Ellisfield. My dad was the vicar there...up until October 12th, 2009...but now, he's never going to leave there, as he's now buried in his "own" church yard.
If you go that way, via Cliddesden, do pop into Ellisfield and say "hello" to dad for me, as it's a bit far for us, from Japan.
:-(
EDIT: Just refreshed my poor, aging memory of borders, and I guess you're nearer Tadley (where I also have some history 26 years ago, with the daughter of one of the nuclear engineers from AWRE!) ;-)

I've ridden up past Ellisfield church many times, and had the misfortune to break my clavicle at 38mph coming down from Farleigh Wallop towards Cliddesden. Ouch!
Yes, I'm nearer Tadley. In Baughurst, which almost merges into the edges of Tadley. AWRE has now dropped the R - no more research (?) just making Trident missiles, I believe.

That, I can symathise with! White Hill, from Ellisfield -> Cliddesden nearly did the same thing to me, when I stayed with my parents, just before moving to Japan.
And though I exported my bicycle, it's not seen the light of day since our son was born!

Yep. I recall the name, "Baghurst". Pretty sure my lady and I (from back then) drove through there from time to time. And on with the photos...!

For what it's worth I was born and brought up in Basingstoke, Queen Mary's Grammar (as was) was the school of my teens. My first wife came from Tadley and some of her family lived in Baughurst. At one time I did some construction work at AWRE, or as it was known then..'behind the wire'
Now living in BC Canada.

Have to admit, with our overly-massive Japanese wedding looming up fast, I've had no time to do any hobby-photography.....only paid stuff
But after April 8th, I'm determined to get back into it all!!!

It's funny, but I "long" for a rainy summer.
Here, the summers are too hot and too humid.
But if you time it right, walks up in the mountains can offer a modest respite from the humidity.
For me, autumn-winter-spring are wonderful....but the last "cycle" has been swamped by the wedding.
Well, 3 weeks to go. And I can get my life back again!!!!!

Good grief!!!! Will the coincidences never end?
My mother used to "work" at The Vyne as a guide, before dad died.
Nice shot....especially as, living over here, I didn't have the chance to go and see what the place was all about!
So, a personal "thanks" from me :-)
Oh, and don't ever worry about "quality" in this thread. Although it's good to see amazing shots, the aim is a shift in thinking....away from "let's jump in the car, drive 100 miles away from where we live, take some photos and go home" to "let's walk/cycle much closer to home, really see what's here, take some photos and go home".
Cheers for now, and again....thank you!

Trust me, you don't want a summer like ours. It was the worst!!! I couldn't ride at all, and I couldn't go to the beach. If it wasn't raining everything was drying out... And then it would just rain again. Ha! It was the worst!!!

Thanks for the welcome, Simon.
A hybrid bicycle is not 'duty' specific. They can do on-the-road biking, and also go off-pavement for some light mountain biking.
Here's a photo of me on the new steed. I also own a 150 H.P. sport motorcycle, but anymore I always pick the bicycle when it's time for a ride. I guess at 60, my priorities have changed. :D

...i didn't actually walk to times square from home in brooklyn, but hoofing it is the method of choice when exploring the city ! the taxicabs of new york city, with their distinctive yellow paint, are a widely recognized icon of the city according to online reports. the act of flagging down a cab is called "hailing", there's not much to it, just stick out your arm above your head, and pretend you're the statue of liberty. when the numbers on the roof of the cab are lit, it is available. it is estimated that 1.6 million travelers pass through times square per day. Thanks so much for adding.....plus the comment about the original idea :-)
In a nutshell, I think one great way POTNers can improve their photographic skills is NOT to drive/fly off, hundreds or thousands of kilometers in search of somewhere/something "exotic" to snap.
Instead, popping somewhere nearby on foot or using pedal-power (which is, IMHO the absolute best speed for humans to travel) can reveal subjects with more depth, if only one can learn how to "see" them.
Cheers for now, and looking forward to more from you.
