Hello.
This is my first post to these forums so please be gentle
Up until a few weeks ago I used (not very well though) Canon FD equipment ,T90 etc but now possess a 20D some lenses and a Sigma EF 500 DG SUPER flash.
Unfortunately most of my lenses/accessories are incompatible including a Canon 300TL flash but I was wondering if the 'Off camera shoe cord' (not number 2 ) would work with EOS equipment or is it more than just a direct connector? If so it would save a little money.I hope someone can help or point me to correct thread.
Thank you

To be honest, No, it will not.
You need the 2 chord as that is desigend for all EX / ETTL flashes

That's only true if he has an ETTL compatible flash and wants to maintain the ETTL operation off camera but it looks like he doesn't.
If the flash can be set to manual mode, any chord which has the center and ground connections should work fine.

Thank you Richardthe Sane and PacAce for the replies.
I do wish to use the full ETTL functions through the cord and it looks like I will need to purchase the 'off camera shoe cord 2'.
I am puzzled though as the cord I have has 5 connectors like the ones on the EOS 20D hotshoe so maybe there is some circuitry in the adapter which makes the difference.
Thanks for the help. :)

Carronade, the Canon 300TL is not ETTL compatible so you won't be able to use it with your 20D in ETTL mode. However, you may be able to set it to one of it's manual modes but if you do, you'll need to manual set the aperture on the camera.

Apologies to you PacAce, I do not think my original query was very clear.
I was using the 300TL with my T90 ,however I now have a Sigma EF-500 DG Super for use with my EOS 20D and it was with this that I wanted to use the 'off camera shoe cord'.
I have dismantled it and there does not appear to be anything in the cord.It just looks like a simple connection but I could be naive as I am not into things electronic.
Thanks again.

Mark, if you have an ohmmeter or continuity tester, you can check to see if all of the connections at one end go properly to the other end. If they do, then there is little reason not to give it a try on the camera.

Mark, my apologies to you and Richard. I did misread your post. And Richard was correct, you will need the off-shoe cord 2 to make the Sigma flash work with the 20D.
:o
I'm not sure why the old cord won't work with the DSLRs as they seem to have the same number of pins but they don't according to Canon.

PacAce ,no problem.
Thank you all for your help in this.
I might try my old cord on the camera (hope this does not lead to tears) after checking with a multimeter (when I have worked out how to use it:confused: ) otherwise it is another purchase.

There might be the same number of pins on the hot shoe connectors, but it is possible that they are not all "wired-through" to the other end. That would make a problem. However, quick ohmmeter tests will show that, one way or the other.
