Is this for real that the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 (at around $89.00 U.S.) is voted one of the best portrait lenses? If so, I will get one. It's plastic too.

If you really want to spend more, the 50/1.4 is awesome aswell. More buttery bokeh, built slightly better, USM is much faster AF. However, it wasn't worth the $$$ difference for me. (more like I didn't have the money to spend... lol)

The 1.8 is a great little lens with good optics. You might find it's a little on the flimsy side, so if you're wanting it for heavy duty use you should consider the 1.4 that KevC suggests instead.
But for the price, nothing comes close in my book.

Okay, I've taken the plunge and bought the "thrifty fifty". I'm planning on using it to take basketball pictures (5th grade girls) under the basket. The 70-200 is great...but too much for the up-close-and-personal ones under this basket. I'm hoping this works out...certainly worth the $69.
I'll post a couple of images when I get it.

It isn't called the "nifty fifty" for nothing! Great quality, cheap price. it should be the first lens you buy if you've already got the kit lens!

Just got mine today. It's great! Sure, it's a little cheap, but it feels pretty good nontheless, and get this: it's made in Japan (instead of being cheaply and badly manufactured in China)!

Mine is the 1.4 but they are both great value for the quality of photos.

You get what you pay for. If you have a problem with items that are made in China, please by all means don't buy them. In the world of globalization, I am stunted to hear such uninformed and ridiculous comment.

I know this isn't supposed to be that kind of a debate, but I find it interesting that my Japanese-made lens costs ~$25 less than the Chinese made one (Nikon), feels more solid, and is faster (at focusing, the f/ is the same). Globalization indeed...
But back to photography...

It's an economics thing...when there are millions of people without work in a country, it doesnt cost too much to get people to work in factories to make your product. And when you have cheap labor, more often then not, you'll have a cheap product.

As I always say there is nothing like generalisation and stereotyping to generate a healthy debate.
Is country of origin relevant? I own 2 BMWs one made in Germany one made in the US. Both bought new. The 3 series (made in Germany) never been back to the garage except for the service interval, the Z4 (made in the US) only done 7,000 miles been back to the garage 3 time for 3 different faults all fixed very quickly as they were due to poor assembly.
Just to show I have no bias, I had a Jaguar before the Z4 and it was a pig
I don’t attribute this to the country ….much :D
I have the 1.4 it's a good lens, a friend has the 1.8 it is also a good lens.

When companys like canon, or any other company from any other country, send their production to china, there is a reason for it. It is to save money through labor.
The reason your BMW is made in the united states has nothing to do with cheap labor.
