I'm new to the indoor shoot environment and need some help. I own a Canon 300D with Sigma EF-500 DG SUPER flash. I took a few photos with the flash and my friend took the same photos with his built in flash. My photos were much darker than his. I used the auto setting on the camera as well as the flash as I only had it for 1 month. I tried different positions as well as light source but with no success. My confidence took a loop and I'm afraid to take indoor photos. Can any one help please?

What were your settings on the camera and the flash, and are you sure you didn't accidently dial in (-)FEC on the flash?

Also, when shooting flash at subjects indoors, consider whether they are normal subjects or whether they have lots of white or lots of black (which will throw off many flash metering systems).

This shows up in wedding photos. The bride is wearing a white dress, and the flash metering tries to make it into 18% gray. The groom is wearing a black tuxedo, and the flash metering tries to make it into kind of a dull gray-black. Put the bride and groom together in the shot, and you get all sorts of other problems.

The settings on the camera were auto as well as the flash. I think the flash displayed ETTL.
