Hi all! I am new to this forum and photography as well. I mainly take pics of my son and would love any suggestions as to how to improve. Thanks so much!

That is a very sweet picture there. I have a little (very little) experience in shooting little ones and I'm impressed in how you were able to capture that shot quickly. I'm just not fast-fingered enough.
I don't know if it is just my monitor (my work computer screen has issues) but the image looks a little too soft. Soft is good, but for me this might be a little too soft...then again I should check it out on a different monitor.
Of course the important factor is what YOU think of the image. If you think the softness is just right then good for you. We can give tips and ideas but whether something is good or not should first start with your opinion of the images.

Thanks for the reply! I agree that it may be a bit too soft. Can you tell me how to fix that? I have adobe photoshop but am REALLY new to it. Any suggestions? thanks!

There is a tool called "unsharpen mask" that could help some. It can be found going to Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask. This will give you a preview and a slider that wil help "sharpen" your image. You have to be careful with this tool though because you can go too far and start to add unwanted noise to the image.
For future images all I could say is that the autofocus will be your best friend in these situations. For mirror shots I would say try focusing on the reflection so the face will be sharp to draw the attention.
Oh, and just keep shooting :)
