If you can't fit a whole body in a frame, where is it acceptable/proper to cut body parts off (not literally) in standing or sitting positions?

I just read that it is not a good idea to cut someone off at a joint (e.g., knees). I assume that it would also not be a good idea to cut off at the waist either. Better places would be mid thigh, mid chest, or between the knee and ankle.
