I'm going to Hawaii for 3 weeks, So I'm gonna need A LOT of storage for my pictures. I dont want to go out and buy a new card... So I was wondering if there was a way I can transfer the pictures from my card to something else.
Thanks,
Mike

Anything else would be much more expensive than buying another card ... unless you already have a laptop computer and a card reader. There are many storage devices with built in card readers, but they're much more expensive than another CF card.

Well I took over 1200 pictures in 5 days when I went to Cuba. So 3 weeks in Hawaii will be insane!
I heard something about a hard drive, and you can just put your card in it and copy them over.
I think it might have a screen on it too.

This Epson (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=355953&is=REG) unit is considered one of the best, but there are cheaper alternatives if you don't need to view the images. You can browse through them here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=breadCrumb&A=search&Q=&ci=3369).

iPod and Belkin iPod card reader. plus you can listen to music. If you already have an iPod for music, just empty it out before your trip, transfer photos during your trip, and restore your songs when you get home.
There are also dedicated storage devices with photo display screens & built-in card readers, they're very expensive and can't play music.

The storage bins are actually very affordable unless you want a veiwer as well.
One can get a 20-40GB "X-drive" type of unit for under $200.00...
Compare that to the cost per GB of CF cards and they are dirt cheap.

About two years ago, I did my own X-Drive. It was purchased without a laptop-style hard disk, so I purchased a separate disk and installed it myself. The total cost for everything came to about $140.

These have a high transfer rate and use AAA batteries. Different storage amounts will vary the price. They are what I will buy once I have the funds.

I bought my X-Drive "shell" on ebay for $100 and put a 30gb laptop hard drive that I had leftover from when I upgraded my laptop. A real inexpensive way to store photos and I love it so far!!

Even the ones with screens are coming down in price now I have a 40 gig Flash Trax so at least you can see the photos have down loaded and look at them in an evening or when ever. battery power seems quite good, but I have yet to really test it out on a long trip when I might be away from a power to recharge the battery.
I Read in a photo mag fairly recently that a 20 gig drive is big enough to hold 4000 Raw files at 5mb each as taken on a 6meg camera. The equilalent to a 110 36 exposure rolls of film!

i havnt bought it yet, but im getting one of these (Second one down) for my trip to euopre this summer you can get it with a 60gig for like 189, they also have ones that will act as mp3 players, but i already have an mp3 player so i dont need it and the battery says it will only last 2 hours, this may not be the best solution for on teh go transfers due to short battery life, but i plan on using it to dump picters each night when i can have it plugged it.
Also you can buy jsut the shell and get the HD elsewhere for less if you want to...

Hey, Michael. I ran into the same problem and bought a Flashtrax (http://www.smartdisk.com/Products/DigitalMultimedia/FlashTrax.asp) and now they're offering a $50 rebate. I took mine to Italy for 3 weeks and downloaded about 10-11 GB. You can view them on the nice color screen and it's dependable. Only things to watch for is it gets warm when downloading 1gb or more, so I found that keeping it in a cool place when downloading works best. The battery isn't the best, but I always downloaded plugged in. I've had to buy 1 extra battery for it in 2 years. I have the 30gb model they're not selling anymore. When you get home from a trip, no more downloading multiple cards. Just hood it up via usb and your computer recognizes it as a hard drive. Download away. I keep a fan on it the entire time so it doesn't over heat. Maybe they've fixed it by now.

By the way, Mike, I have a suggestion for some GREAT SHOTS! I went to the Big Island 11 years ago and took some night 35mm film shots of Kilauwea (sp?) volcano where it flows into the ocean. In the daytime all you see is steam, but at night, wow! I was totally flabbergasted at how great they looked when developed. (Sadly, my best roll of volcano shots was lost; presumably fell out of my pocket) Oh, and if you like flowers, you'll absolutely be blown away - I've never seen such a proliferation of flowers anywhere. Hope you'll share some photos with us when you get back! :)
