Macro tripod --HELP!!!!

HELP !!!! Am going on a trip to the Big Bend area of west Texas to photograph critters, lizards, insects, flowers, etc....I need advice on a ground level tripod which will support the 10D, 100 macro lens, 100-400 zoom....it needs to be sturdy enough to support these...also, able to be designed for use on rough, rocky terrain....I have the Bogen 2001 which legs will extend flat, but cannot get the camera low to the ground and well supported....what do I do?....

I use the Gitzo G2220. Possible to get very low to the ground and very stable.

check and see if your center post is reversable...I can do it on my 3021 legs.

I second the Gitzo G2220 vote ... outstanding tripod for macro.

I second the Gitzo 2220. Can't beat it for getting in unusal, ground level positions. I just love mine--I use the Kirk BH-3 ballhead with it.

Another for the G2220, the one that I wish I had bought. The 3021's center column can be removed, allowing it to get very low indeed.

And what Bruce doesn't show in his photo, you can also use the center column horizontally on the 3021, which gets you even closer to the ground.

I'll toss in another vote for the G2220. Legs can be locked at any angle between 0 and 90 degrees, and the center column can be tilted to many angles between upright to straight down and even slightly backward without removing the column.

I have a Benbo treker which you can get down very low to the ground with, it is a bit fiddly to set up but works well for me. You would have no problem with your 100mm macro, not sure about the 100-400mm zoom it might be a bit unstable for it. I've used my 70-200mm 2.8 sigma but only with the colum up right not at an angel.

The trekker is great. especially if you get into tight areas. It's nice and light too, if you're going to be hiking around with it. also, the leg sections are build to overlap from bottom to top so you don't get water up into them if you're shooting in standing water.
