I'm test-driving a Canon A590 (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=16336#SNAModelSuppliesAct) and want to know if the teleconverter accessory or the wide angle accessory is worth it. Or would I be better going for an SX10IS (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17480)?

My Powershot A530 fell in love with gravity this morning...not good!

While I believe the add-on lenses probably work well with the 590, I don't think it's much of a contest. You would be better off buying the SX10. It's a bit chunky, but you have it all in one package. 28 to 560 equiv.

I'd go w/ the SX...less hassle, no chance of losing the adapter...and it's just a nicer overall camera :)

SX10IS.

Search this sub forum, plenty of examples and users around.

Look forward to welcoming you to the family. :-)

I discovered that I was actually looking at the SX110IS, not the SX10IS. Either way...they do look nice.

Well that puts a whole nother light on the story. I would like the zoom on the SX110IS, but just don't want a camera without a viewfinder. But that's just me. You may see it differently.

The SX110 IS would be better in the long run for you than the A590 IS, given the longer zoom reach, the larger LCD, and I think even the design.

The downside of the SX110 is no optical viewfinder, some think this is an essential item. It's zoom starts at 36mm (equiv), and there is no option to purchase an optional wide angle converter. However, it does zoom out to 360mm (equiv).

The SX110 is selling for about $200 right now, and the A590 is about $110. If you wanted a wide angle option, then that would cost you about $110 for the lens and adapter for the A590. You would then have the equivalent wide angle of 24.5mm.

There appears to be an interest in wider angle point and shoot models today, so paying a total of $220 for an A590 with the wide angle would give you that option, but the package is bulkier. If you also wanted the longer reach on the A590, then the tele lens would cost about $100 more (giving you an equivalent zoom of 245mm), with total cost now at about $320, and then you would need a larger camera bag to carry everything. You might want to rethink getting the optional lenses, and instead explore other cameras that give you a wider and longer zoom, plus manual controls.

The SX10 IS comes to mind at about $340. There are other features of the SX10 that would add more capabilities the other models don't offer, such as a hot shoe for external flash.
