My mom is looking for a compact digital camera and we can't seem to find one to meet all of our criteria. We want:
At least 7-8 MP
IS would be nice
Either sport or manual mode (both preferred)
minimum 5x optical zoom
fast flash recovery time
I'm probably forgetting something but it's late. Thanks in advance for the help!

S5is, SX10is, G9, G10
if those don't have a fast enough recovery time then you probably will need to look at a SLR

The SD990 only has 3.7X zoom but everything else, it is vary compact and a joy to use, also has great IQ for a camea that size

I have a SD950 and I am very happy with the quality I get. The SD990 is even better - more pixcels!

I vote for the The Canon PowerShot A720IS 8MP (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V1VG2E?ie=UTF8&tag=gelstoncafeco-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000V1VG2E)
Everything is good, except, flash recovery time!
