I have recently taken a number of indoor shots of my son playing basketball. I have set the ISO levels at 1600 and 800. Even at 800, there appears to be an awful lot of noise when I view the photos with Elements 3.0.

Will these pictures look much better when they are actually printed?

Is the DReb effectively limited to an ISO400 level?

Or is there some magical post processing that I need to do that I am currently not aware of?

If you get unacceptably high noise in your high ISO shots, then consider using a color noise reduction program like Neat Image or Noise Ninja.

I don't know what you mean by "an awful lot". That;s pretty subjective :) . Could you post a link to an image, or a small crop of a noisy area ?

There is noticeable noise at ISO 800 and even more at ISO 1600. If you do any sharpening it will become more pronounced.

Actually, when you look at your images on the screen zoomed to 100% , you're looking at them as they would appear if you printed them at 36 X 24 inches.

Printing at smaller sizes will 'hide' a lot of the noise. You can also 'tweak' the images with plugins like 'Neatimage'. They will remove a lot of the noise without blurring the details and highlighs too much.

FWIW, most people feel they get better results with digital SLR's than they do with film at 800 and 1600 ISO..

If you print them small you won't see too much noise, if you print them large you'll definitely see it. Like Bob says, noise reduction can work wonders.

Here is a link to a FREE noise program and it works great! I prefer it for noise over PS CS. Yeah it's an extra step but the results are worth it.

The amount of noise you get at high ISO's will also depend how underexposed the shot is.
