... that they start sending shut down notices to parody pages (http://fakechuckwestfall.wordpress.com/2009/02/14/shut-down-notice-from-canon/)? You may or may not agree with what's said on that page, you may not even find it all that funny, but I think they've gone a little bit too far here ...

It's called the Streisand Effect. Now thousands of people who've never heard of the site have now read it :)

My brother in law is a lawyer in a big firm that does copyright infringement. This is what he always tells me, "If they fail to pursue infringement, then they can legally lose their copyrights and exclusivity." As far as the items in that complaint that are not dealing directly with canon such as personal and family issues about staff and management... I have no idea. but if they don't go after those that use there logo and company information regardless how satirical they stand to lose legal recourse for the ones that are doing it to profit.

Not as desparate as Monster Cables -

(at least Canon makes a decent product, whereas Monster stuff is overpriced junk....)

There's a difference between trademarks and copyright and I'm surprized your brother in law mixed those up.
A trademark gives you a unique name or logo which must not be confused by potential customers. If someone made cameras and called them Cannon, Canon would have to step up, because possible customers could be confused by the similar naming. If they don't protect it actively, they'd lose it, because it's not unique anymore.
You are certainly not required to pursue copyright or patent infringement. These are time limited monopoly rights and you are allowed to share this monopoly in any way you want. In the case of this web site it was made very clear that this is a parody (which protects against possible copyright claims). In no way does the blogger create confusion about the origin of this web page. Please ask your brother in law whether this would still be a case of trademark infringement. IANAL but I sure think not.
