View Full Version : B+W Filter Issue?

Hey all,
I recently got a B+W 77mm CPL Kasemann and although I love the images it is producing, I noticed something and wanted some input...
We all know that the CPL rotates, but this one seems to pull out slightly as if it is working itself away from the fixed ring. Is it me or is there a problem? I'll try to post some pics when I'm able (at school supposed to be studying)
Thanks in advance!
Mike

I also have the B+W 77mm CPL Kasemann but I haven't noticed mine able to pull out slightly (unless the slightly is so slight I cant see it? ??? ).

I was going to make a thread like this. I noticed mine does that exact same thing. I only noticed it when I was trying to attach the cokin z pro holder to the front of that filter.

I did the exact same thing with my Cokin Z-Pro and got scared when the Kaesemann seemed to come apart slightly and the Z-Pro could be wiggled back and forth. I thought that maybe I forced it apart by screwing in the Z-Pro adapter ring. Without the Z-Pro everything seems fine but I can move the outer ring just slightly apart with some force.

ok, here are closeups as best as i can show them, pardon the photography lol
If someone would donate me a 100mm 2.8 Macro, then things would look better!
it does pull out farther, but i dont want to put too much pressure on it...I guess it didnt come out as much as I thought....hopefully we all have the exact same problem, negating the issue :)

That's about how far my Kaesemann comes out too. It doesn't feel like it can go any further but I haven't put much force on it. Under normal operation I have never noticed it coming apart, so hopefully it's no big deal. Did you get yours from Hvstar? I hope they aren't some "factory seconds" outlet.

timeasterday,
Mine definitely doesn't do that..... like rolex87 photos show and I did get mine from Hvstar

YEP, from HVstar. I'm going to shoot with it today (indoors as it's pouring) and see if it bothers me. I'll email HVstar, but I think it takes them a day to respond due to the time difference.

I sent an e-mail to schneider optics trying to explain this issue. Let's see what comes back. I will post the response when received.
Anyone else checked theirs. You can't really get this to pull apart unless it is mounted on the lens. Mine comes out slightly just like the photo posted. Dosen't seem right being these are supposed to be the best of the best.

My non-Kaesemann version doesn't do this. Hopefully you'll get a speedy replacement.

OK, so hvStar tells me that although everything is factory sealed, they don't open the seals to keep the factory packaging...
They said send it to them and they'd replace it for me. Anyone know what it costs to ship it to HK?

Are you sure that little, thin retainer ring on the front of the filter has not come loose?

It's the large ring for sure. It seems like the unit is just two pieces overall, but im sure there's something aiding the rotating mechanism.

No response from Schneider, yet. Anyone else check theirs? What are you guys going to do?

Luckily I had just bought mine. I'm super short on funds so I had to do the slow shipping to HK, but hopefully I get it by the time I hit up Yosemite in March/April.

rolex 87 - Yes, I just received mine about two weeks ago; please let me now what it cost and did you have to fill out any custom declaration paperwork. Did you send it signature on receipt requested or what?

I had to e-mail a photo showing the problem to Hvstar and after veiwing the pics they than asked I ship it back for a replacement; so it's on the way back. Same here; shipped first classs international mail to HK $5.40.
I sent two e-mails to Schneider Optics (filter sales) and so far have not received any response.

lol,
Your dad and I are probably the same age and think alike. I always try to keep the change whenever I go to the store for the wife or my son. He is at U of I Champaign and he better be studying. Please let us know how your exchange goes as I will do likewise.

UPDATE: They received my filter (I was getting super nervous it got lost) and they are sending a replacement. They mentioned this in their email...
>We received your return filter today.
>After checking, we found that it is not a problem to use. On the contrary, it would be better.
>However, we will send you a replacement ( the ring is tight) as soon as possible.
>Please confirm.
Seems like the program they use isn't 100% perfect lol

Hmmm....I wonder why they say it would be better?

I received a similar e-mail today and once they receive my confirmation a replacement will also be sent. It seems they are thinking it rotates more easily. I still don't think they are supposed to pull away from the ring like that; however, I never did receive any responce from schneider after two e-mails. hvstar has responded promptly and taking care of business so they are ok as far as I am concerned. I have purchased several other B + W filters with no issues in the past.

well im still waiting...the tracking number says it has left HK, hoping it doesnt get lost! I need it by the 26th for my trip!

That will be too close to call. The average delivery time I have experienced from HvStar from the date it leaves Hong Kong to the date it is actually delivered to my door has been 10 days. Tracking indicates my replacement left Hong Kong on 3/16/09 which would put it here on 3/26/09. Good luck; it would be great to have that for the trip.
