froman98: a little John Frieda's hair serum could tame that fro into luxurious curls. My son has the same type of hair :)

Can't remember if I already posted but too lazy to search. Someone else had this name at another forum. I liked it and used it here. But thinking of changing it 'cause some people seem to get the wrong idea.

miklav

mine is simple: miklav = MIKhail LAVrenov i.e. my name :)

Christopher J Martin. Simple huh?

2Hog
12th of July 2005 (Tue), 10:41
I started riding Harley Davidson motorcycles in 1948. I have had 2 hogs in the garage since 1994 and my son-in-law started calling me 2hog. One of the harleys belonged to him.

As a younger rider in the 40s and 50s I was called Hot Rod but I decided to go with 2hog.

zacker
13th of July 2005 (Wed), 12:33
zacker.. a play on the word zack, zac or zak.. which is short for Zacarelli.. My last name.
lol

TundraBunny
14th of July 2005 (Thu), 15:11
 First I wanted Queen Bee which is what Deborah means but it was being used by so many and I didn't particularly care for Shark Bait which was given to me as a cb handle when I lived in Alaska. The cb handle was given to me because I was always so full of it...my best friends dad decided I would be shark bait the next time we went fishing, which was often. Sooooo...I decided on TundraBunny because I use to live in Alaska and I am a female which many refer to as a bunny. Noooo...I'm not a playmate.:p

Music to my eyes
15th of July 2005 (Fri), 01:48
I wanted to join a really good photography forum, and finally found one......and was wanting something photo related in the name. All the obvious ones I could think of were gone ....lack of imagination perhaps??
So took a different tack -what does a photo do for me? Well, it's like music to my...eyes.....
The images I treasure most are the ones that affect me deeply. That's why I prefer portraiture/people images the most. I think it's amazing that a bunch of dots on a screen/paper can conjure up such emotions.......just like music can make you feel things even though they're just soundwaves.......

well there are a number of things that I wonted to acheave with my name. + I wonted I couldn't think of anything interesting.

cerveza4lu
20th of July 2005 (Wed), 00:57
A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, I was a salesman for a Corona Beer Distributor. It did have some benefits :). Seeing as I needed a work related e-mail I chose: cerveza (beer), 4 (for), lu (Lou). Hence the cerveza4lu!

lomond
20th of July 2005 (Wed), 01:36
My handle, "Lomond", I took from the hill, Ben Lomond, not from Loch Lomond.
Ben Lomond is Gaelic and means Beacon Hill ( Ben = hill and Lomond= beacon ).

My given name is Cameron, which was my great grandmothers surname.
She hailed from Benavie, near Fort William, homeland of the Camerons of Lochiel.
Cameron is also Gaelic and means "Crooked Nose".
In Gaelic "cam " means crooked or bent and "shron" means nose.

Is it true ? .................my nose may or may not be bent.......... but my lips are sealed.

Big John
22nd of July 2005 (Fri), 12:31
I am indeed a big fellow (6 foot, 5 inches tall and at one point weighed as much as 332 pounds), and when I was in the Army several years ago I aquired the nickname "Big John"....the silly part of it is that my name isn't even John! It was a referance to Little John from Robin Hood, but the person who pegged my with the name was a little confused.....

Knowing that there can be MUCH worse things to be called, I let it slide. Over time it just got shortened to John, and my commanding officer called my by that name for almost two years before he realized my actual name is Chris.

John is a much more manly name than Chris!

billspaced
22nd of July 2005 (Fri), 13:44
It's my screen name for a lot of things. It started when I bought my first "Windows" computer in '95...and tried to sign up for AOL. Bill D was taken (first name space last initial) so I used billspaced...and now people think I'm an airhead or drug user.

What was I talking about? Why am I so hungry?

*ROFL*
That is just hilarious!

Anyway, my story is kinda silly, and not funny at all. But as everything else I write, it's long. Many years ago, I needed a nick name to use on computers, so I asked a friend of mine if he had any ideas, since I couldn't come with something 'cool'. He gave it some thought and then told me a few I could choose from, one being "Marduk". He got it from the death metal group, I used because it was a god from the babylonian mythology, and my name is Martin, so half of it was from there.

So I had a cool nickname, life was good... and then Internet started catching on. It actually happened that someone had already taken my nick when I signed up in places, and on IRC (chat) other people often used it. After a long time of this, I decided I needed a change, so I took "MarDuK" and made it short "mdk". That was a great nickname for quite some time, very short and practical. The problem was that they released a game called mdk - Murder Death Kill, and other also realised that a short nickname was a good idea, so had to stop use that as well. Very annoying.

I had to change again, and this time I went for a nick-nickname.
On IRC, back in the days when I was called Marduk, some people had called me martook, like a combination of Marduk and Peregrin Took in Lord of the Rings. Don't know why (could be because martook sounds like marcrazy but in swedish), but I thought it was strange enough that I should be able to use it for some time, so I started having that as a screen name, and kept mdk for some things. Several years later, this is still a working combination, so I'm very happy with it :p

Cheers!

Ps. Yes, I'm utterly bored, not even I would have written all that otherwise...

zacker
24th of July 2005 (Sun), 06:57
The funny thing about my name is "zacker" is short for my last name "zacarelli" and growing up I was caller "zac" or "zak" but i explained all this earlier.. I belong to another photo site called betterphoto.com and there is someone else there who's real last name is "zacker" and I hope I didnt steal his screen name..somehow I dont think I did. About 1/2 hour ride from my house is a camera store called "Zackers Camera" Now that is a crazy coincidince if you ask me!

swiftybilko
25th of July 2005 (Mon), 17:02
In one episode of the Phil Silvers Show, Ernie Bilko is pleased to hear that his cousin Swiffington "Swifty" Bilko is joining the Motor Pool. A great opportunity for the Bilko family to join forces and clean up....however Swifty (played by Dick van Dyke) is a callow youth who has never picked up a deck of cards in his life.

I was the youngest and most naive in the pub, so was given the name which has stuck for over 20 years. To the extent my mother in law believed my surname was Swift until the day I married her daughter.

KnobCreek

I'm an avid rifle and pistol collector and when I went to a shootout, got drunk on Knob Creek bourbon. Took the name to remind me never to do it again and to honor the machinegun shootouts in Knob Creek, KY.

Matatazela
28th of July 2005 (Thu), 06:44
Matatazela

I am a white South African, who goes by the name of James Mitchell

However, when I worked in Nature Conservation, the Zulu people that I worked with gave me a nickname as is customary with them when they get to know someone over time.

Matatazela means someone that is always running around, never sits still.

I tried a few James129479 type names but Matatazela is pretty unique and I have yet to come across it elsewhere in this forum. :)

What part of KwaZulu-Natal are you in, I lived in Pietermaritzburg for a while.

Well, as my ex-wife was born there it's a chance to explain my name: condyk is a combo of the first three letters of my surname and the last three of her's.

We chose it when we left for out first big travelling trip from 1999-2001 and we wanted a easy to remember hotmail address to keep in touch with people back home and also a domain name to use to upload images as we went.

As it happens I came up with nomadswithlaptops as a domain, which I still keep with all the photo's (postage stamp sized - ever tried uploading over dialup in Sri Lanka!!!!), and so condyk died within two weeks other than for email .... but I have pretty much used it everywhere as a screen name since. So far, it's never failed to be unique.

schmoelzel
28th of July 2005 (Thu), 14:16
Ok, I'll explain. My wife and I are both transported Germans living in beautiful Canada and we both have German last names.....mine is Schmidt; hers is Stoelzel. Combine the two and you get SCHMOELZEL!

Every now and then I come up with a new nick. I would say every few years. The last one was CorruptedSanity, but seeing as this is a photography forum; CorruptedPhotographer sounded devious.

I like the word Corrupted ;)

AKA:

Skip Souza
28th of July 2005 (Thu), 18:36
If my wife can use her real name I guess that I can use mine. No imagination necessary. Also easy to remember
Skip is the nickname that my parents gave me from the begining. Souza means one who dwells in salty places. The rim of a mararita glass is salty, isn't it?
Make checks payable to Robert J. Souza ;)

Dundee, in the north. About two hours from PMB, although I am going there today!

About the name, it's impolite to say "Headless Chicken"...

Matatazela is also one of those three wheeled log lifting and loading machines. The way they move is always this way, then that way, never consistent and steady, which is quite important in the Zulu vaue system.

I have a Raptor RC Helicopter and live in the desert. DesertEagle was used elsewhere so I played.

glenhead
29th of August 2005 (Mon), 17:04
Mine is the only nickname I've ever been given, by a buddy of mine at work back before the earth cooled. Started off as More Glenhead (instead of Glen Morehead (which I've always liked - the valley at the top of the moors (despite the teasing as a kid))), and he started calling me Glenhead. I've used it in just about every forum I've ever joined.

Airedale1
18th of September 2005 (Sun), 22:54
As you might guess I am a proud owner of an Airedale Terrier. I've always had Airedales and so did my dad and his dad before him.

So, for those that don't know an Airedale is a black and tan, no shedding, bear hunting, bird retrieving, war dispatch delivering, varmint chasing, member of the Terrier family and they are the largest member of that group. Back in the mid-1920'S here in the States they were the most popular dog.

Took the name back in the 90's for that exciting BB action and text based mudding and have kept it since.
sounds kinda like woo way-- it is a taoist concept-- and can basically mean "effortless effort" from one definition.
Now, the zero at the end can represent "nothingness"- as in "being and nothingness," yin and yang. . . . Or it could be that wu wei is often taken and everyone seems to start their numbering at 1. You choose! ;)

whyzzerd
12th of October 2005 (Wed), 03:14
ok.... This isn't just my history, but my families history...

My dad is a computer programmer who was really good at his job. He had a "do not disturb the wizard" sign on his door. From there his co-workers started calling the wizard as a joke. When he signed up for aol a loooong time ago he tried to use Wizard, but of course it was taken so he decided to spell it Whyzzerd. I used his name for a year or so before getting my own. However, I was already known as whyzzyrd around the web and wanted to stay close to that so I got Whyzzerd@aol.com. My sister wanted something close so she got Whyzzerd@yahoo.com. My brother wanted to stay with the same family theme so he spelt his whezzyrd. I have a few like whizzyrd and some others I can't remember. I have stuck with Whyzzerd since I was around 15. One great think about it is that it is NEVER taken!

bachscuttler
12th of October 2005 (Wed), 13:48
I'd rather not go there!
My nick may make more sense to UK members who know of a rather crude comedian called Roy 'Chubby' Brown.

I was a bassist for 25 years and rather fond of a little 'JS' (Bach)

Put the 'Bach' and the 'Scuttler together, listen to some Chubby Brown albums and the rest will fall into place

Some time ago I PM'd Pekka to shorten it to 'Bachs' but it must have got lost in the 'post'

nation
12th of October 2005 (Wed), 15:02
No meaning behind mine. Nation was the first 6 letter word that went through my head when on the first day of my very first job the computer administrator asked for a 6 letter password to access the network. For the next 4 years I used variations of nation (nation1, nation2, nation3 ......) whenever we had to change passwords. I started using the name and password on internet forums and it has stuck. I've since changed the password though :p :p

UCMBA97
12th of October 2005 (Wed), 15:41
When I joined AOL, I had to come up with a screen name. I was in college at the time, working on a Bachelors in Accounting and expected to graduate in 1996, so I became UCBBA96 (school-degree-year). After graduation, I decided to stick around and get my masters, so I then became UCMBA97. And where is UC you ask, well it's the University of Cincinnati, which makes me a Bearcat Basketball fan.
You can find me on AOL, AIM, and various message boards (MR2 owners club, FJR owners, and here) as UCmba97

My name is Angel, some family call me Angie. Either works for me.

I love this thread!

JohnnyG is just my name but with a twist. My name is John Giles. My mother called me Johnny and I never allowed anyone else to call me that because it was special from her.

My mother passed away many years ago and I stubbornly kept the same attitude until 4 or 5 years ago and I came up with JohnnyG. I don't know why but maybe it was because it was time. I still prefer John but I do like that handle. I use it all over the place and naturally used it here. I was surprised I could get it here with so many people but I did and I'm glad.

Thanks for such a wonderful thread!:D

Since I'm new to this forum, I figured I'd try out some of the non-photography threads and stumbled - well, not really stumbled since it's out in the open - on this one.

My name cames from another nickname I use on another forum. That nickname came from the fact that I was listening to a particular song when I registered with the other forum and it just stuck. I'm not sure how site-plugging is viewed here so I won't mention the other forum's name, but I think there may be some members there who are members here. If that is the case, then you may recognize me by that nickname, which happens to be JumpinJesus.

Oh, I'm long-winded, too.

Very interesting thread! In my case, I simply use my first name. I guess I'm lucky that it's not very common so I can just use it as it is. Or actually, I'm unlucky for not being a very creative person.

I think the only time I haven't used my real name is on ham radio. My handle was Black Cat but that was nearly 20 years ago.

"Lax" -- Some friends used to poke fun at me for being relaxed and calm ALL the time. One of them just called me Lax, shortened for Relax and it just stuck. "Lacks" -- I am a software programmer for fun, Degree in computer engineering that I do not use except for a hobby. I had a software issue that I just could not work past, spent weeks staring at code wondering what I was doing wrong. One of the friends that dubbed me "Lax" came up and pointed out my error with almost no effort. :o Simple stupid oversight, heh, so he proceeded to taunt me with "Lax lacks at .....". I just stuck them together.

I subsequently stopped playing the online game because I couldn't use my first favourite name.

Sugarzebra is the British Royal Navy's phonetic code for the letters S Z, which is the suffix of my amateur radio callsign....one of my other hobbies. That will make sence to all the other hams on POTN!

mine's initials plus camera model

there's a username I used to use a lot when I got my first I.T job. A group of use were asked to create an e-mail address each for within the company and I couldn't think what to use... one of the guys on my team offered me a cadbury's chocolate animal and I reached in and happened to pick out a bunny!
Needless to say my chosen username incited a lot of curiosity and I no longer go by 'chocolatebunny'

What happened to Sierra & Zulu ?

Hi Neil,

Sugar & Zebra are from the BRN's phonetic alphabet that was used in WWI. More recently the ITU and FAA adopted a different phonetic alphabet that included Sierra & Zulu. Post WWII, Sierra & Zulu have been the most popular however I just like the sound of sugarzebra better than sierrazulu when using my callsign phonetically! Hope that makes sense.

blacksmurf
16th of January 2006 (Mon), 11:54
Hi
I've choosen 'blacksmurf' some years ago, when I used to chat on IrcNET.
It refers to belgian comics "Les schtroumpfs", in english "The Smurfs".
And ... why black?
Many people (here in Europe) know about Smurfs, but only a few know that the first story of Smurfs was about the Black Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs noirs):
while "normal" Smurfs are blue, black ones are nasty, enraged, they don't talk; they only run after blue ones, to finally jump and bite their short tail.
After a black smurf bite, blue ones turn to black.

Here you can see a few images, to show some steps of the original story, in french (the original language):
http://puffonero.tripod.com/
you have to click on the first image, and after that on the right bottom link, to proceed.
"Puffi neri" means "Black smurfs" in italian.

In my choice - joking - the "nasty" side and the fact of "transmitting" something: some time ago it was some alternative music that my friends listened and loved; now, maybe, the passion for photography.

bye
Fabio

SezzySue
20th of January 2006 (Fri), 05:44
I was named after my grandmothers sister, Sarah. Her little brother couldn't say sarah and called her Sezzy. She has always called me that. When I wanted to get a screen name for aol as a teenager, I wanted something easy to remember. My favorite character is Suzy's zoo so I rhymed it and called myseld SezzySue. IT is funny because everyone thinks my name is Sue, which I don't mind people thinking that. It is more privacy for me.

I promised myself as a kid when I was first learning to write at school I would shorten my name as soon as I could. By the time I had written "Jacqueline Margaret Sutherland" at the end of every lesson, everyone else was done and gone. So later I cut it down to Jackie S. My married name still begins with S, so I just stick to that on line.

I was an early subscriber to AOL. Back then my passions were in my Pontiac GTOs ( a 65 and 66). Called "Goats" by those in the hobby, those cars have skyrocketed in value since I sold them cheap. I created my aol screename back then in honor of my hobby and have kept it ever since. Unlike the cars, the screen name has not skyrocketed in value...:(

Came from an obscure comic book character back in the days when login names had to be 8 characters long. Constanly confused with an online comic of the same name (but not the same as the character I took the name from). It's the one I've been using longest, so I stuck with it.

Woolburr

Woolburr is short for Wool E. Bear...the furry little fellow psoing as my avatar. Was told he was dangerous and hated men when I saw him frantically trying to get my attention at the shelter. The shelter staff freaked when I opened his cage and he literally jumped in my arms and demanded to go home with me. I knew he was serious when I was walking him around the parking lot and he jumped in the back end of my Explorer and refused to get out. He's been my sidekick ever since, as well as providing a less than common user name.

My real name is Charlotte, so people call me 'Lotj(e)', because I'm rather small. (-tje is a thing you place after names etc. to make it 'smaller' in Dutch).

Lot also means 'destiny' and 'ticket' in Dutch.

So maybe I'm just a little ticket to the destiny :)
