steved110
13th of September 2006 (Wed), 19:30
My first name is Steve, and D110 is the number of my skydiver's license from Zimbabwe where I learned to fly in free fall. A 'D' license is the most advanced one you can get, at that time you needed 200 free fall skydives and to have completed special tasks/ skill levels to be awarded the license.
It's much harder to get a D license now, but it's something I'm very proud of. I still skydive in the UK but at a much less intense level.
In the attached picture I'm bottom left, taken at Headcorn in Kent about 2 years ago.
TenaCJed
15th of September 2006 (Fri), 07:54
I really like "The Grateful Dead" and I was going through some of their songs. A friend of mine already used Cosmic Charlic (his nick was CosmicC). Another of their songs I like is "Tennessee Jed". Seeing how I was about 19 when I first started to use it I decided I had to change it a little like everyone else (always following what everyone else does). So I came up with TenaCJed for short :D
Every once in a while I will actually get someone that asks me if I like the dead before they ask me if I live in Tennessee, but not too much.

Combination of two names.....best friend was nicknamed Sun Bear because.....well.....he looks like a Sun Bear. I was nicknamed "Beast" because of some unfortunate antics while in college. :o We were so closely linked I was deemed Sun Beast, simplified to Sunbeast.

Banditloon
12th of October 2006 (Thu), 11:24
Bandit - because I have owned a Suzuki GSF600n Bandit for the past 8 years.
Loon - because I drive/ride my bike / car / van like a loon. Generally act like one as well, oh and not forgetting my "god", dear old Road Runner. Looney Tunes cartoons are just the best, well Tom & Jerry are good too... Don't make me choose....
As for my company name, that's a different matter, and one that is not suitable for children

Phil Light
19th of October 2006 (Thu), 20:13
I gave mine about 3 seconds of thought. I assumed I'd have to try multiple times because every conceivable name would be taken... but then the first attempt worked. So now my question; can we change user names? Or are we stuck with them for life?

Advocate
20th of October 2006 (Fri), 18:16
Mine arose oooohhhh a good 6 or 7 years ago when I was doing my nurse training. I had joined a new Quake 3 clan (yes, I was that immature) and needed a new online name. We'd just been doing advocacy at Uni so that sprung to mind straight away and has stuck ever since.
My best mate from my Quake 3 days still calls me "Ad" instead of "AL" (my real name is Alistair)....go figure :)

Box Brownie
27th of November 2006 (Mon), 13:26
Hmmm!!! well my online name comes from a double 'source'.
Firstly my initials are LHB ~ length x height x breadth is the size the volume of a box and as the first camera I ever used was a Box Brownie type i.e. not a Kodak but based on that 'form'.
All that just reminds me of my age lol! ;)
Jon, The Elder
28th of November 2006 (Tue), 08:34
There were so many "jon's" it got confusing.
Besides...it fits my current stage in life.
Sure beats "Jon, The Deceased"

carseasoncity
30th of November 2006 (Thu), 19:10
I used to have all of my usernames after my daughter, Mercede, but then I had two more children and felt guilty not using their names, so... a daughter, Mercede (car), a daughter, Summer (season), and a son, London (city)= carseasoncity. :)
CousinMadness
3rd of December 2006 (Sun), 17:37
In my teens and early twenties I was an avid motorcyclist. Avid may be diluted terminology considering I had 17 motorcycles over a period of 10 years. My younger female Cousins who were dainty and proper blonde little things, had a rebellious fascination for my motorcycles.
One day when their Mother was not around I took them for a 100 mph spin up the Highway. (Don't worry they were wearing good clothing and a full face helmet). Around that time the name Cousin Madness evolved, and after my mountain climbing and motorcycle racing career matured... the name stuck.
I worked in Gravenhurst Canada for several seasons and took on some rather risky jobs. A fellow team mate whom I befriended proved to be equally as crazy as myself. We were affectionately known by the Townsfolk as the "Dangerous Brothers". So.. individually... my nickname both here in Canada and in my native Scotland... has always been Cousin Madness due to the somewhat dangerous things I have done in my life.
Thanks for posing the question.
Cousin. :p

Well, my name has a series of meanings...
Nick is for the pain we endure in life, Sim is dedacated to the computer game which a lot of people spend most their life playing it, and check is for the greed of money that powers the world.
But the weird thing is that it happens to be me name. :P

8th of December 2006 (Fri), 17:18
My cousin was playing counter-strike, told me to play and told me to use a spin-off of his username/handle (1nf1n1t3, at the time). Stupid, but it stuck. 012 is kind of a Korean-English mix up, which means "forever." So, infinite forever.
BTW, 012 = young one e. young = 0 in Korean, one = 1 in English, 2 = e in Korean.

Well i needed a name to use in Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64 game) and i couldnt think of anything so i grabbed a book, looked at a random word and randomly chose 4 letters from it, shuffled them to make sense and WALA. Ospi. Never come across anyone else with it so my random name generator worked a treat.

This seems like the best place to bring this up. I recently asked the mods to change my name. Since October of last year I've been using my actual name, Jeff Solenberg. In this age of identity theft, or maybe I'm just getting paranoid, I decided I'd rather use something slightly less accurate since I seem to be the only Jeff Solenberg on the planet.
I don't know why it struck me, but I was glancing through a website and I saw the term "Fill light". I felt like I was having the same epiphany George Castanza had on Sienfeld when he decided he had discovered the perfect porn star name, Buck Naked.
I'll be happy to answer to Jeff to anyone who remembers, but for the sake of not having to explain constantly, I guess from now on I'm Phil. ;)

I was using Bad Pig Photo (since I am a cop) and a friend uses it for his investment company. I really wanted something that related to my job. After much complaining from the family and friends, I looked around the net and settled on the name Captured by Mike..... the bad thing, I never made the association of Captured and how it relates to my 'full time' job until someone pointed it out to me on these forums.
Captain Obvious, I know!
Mrselfdestruct
2nd of April 2007 (Mon), 14:10
Mrselfdestruct is a song from my fav band Nine Inch Nails. It's the beginning song to his Downward Spiril album and some people agree it's about self-hatred and addiction. The entire album is a story of a mans life, it includes a women he once loved, drugs he was addicted to, god and religion, and they all lead up to his suicide. Trent Reznor IMO is a musical genious. I guess I choose this nickname because somethings I can relate to in his music. But then again, I've never been addicted to such drugs like Heroin, but I've had problems with other substances, and I've deffenatly had some problems with women in my life, and believe me, if you ever heard the album Pretty Hate Machine form Nine Inch Nails, you will know Trent has had his share too.

Lostboy77
4th of April 2007 (Wed), 19:33
A long time ago when I left high school for college, I decided to attend a private college in Washington (the State) that was quite literally in the middle of nowhere and in the process going where NONE of my HS friends were going. One of my closest friends was managing an email list to keep us all in touch and had given everyone nicknames (mine was Lostboy). This was also derived from a movie that we both liked (The Lostboys) that stared Keifer Sutherland (now famious for his role as "Jack Bauer" in the TV series "24") who was a Canadian actor (not so well known at the time) that reminded him of me as all of my family is from Canada.
The 77 is easy . . . it's my birth year.

GAELICSTORM7
7th of April 2007 (Sat), 17:43
:D Interesting thread this one, here's my tale of how mine came about
Once upon a time in a land far far away I used to frequent chatrooms (mostly one called 'bored silly' on virgin.net), my name was Quietstorm, Sir Quietstorm in fact  . I started chatting to a 'Gaelicgirl' in the same chatroom after 4 month we met, 2 month later we were living together,2 month down the line I asked her to marry me, she said yes so as with all the momentous moments in my life I had a tattoo done to mark it (cut it, indelibly) so that tattoo read Gaelicstorm (if your really interested I'll post a photo of the tat  ), the joining of our names (6 happy years on were still married)
Gaelicstorm was taken on here when I joined so Gaelicstorm7 was the nearest I could get.

I thought it was the log-in credential, not the screen name.
So, I hate my screen name.
;)
It's not hopeless. CDS can change it if you PM him.

I am a paramedic by trade. When a person's heart stops, that's called asystole. We have to use our cardiac monitor and view the heart in 2 views (aka leads). Hence, asysin2leads = asystole in 2 leads.

Just looking around late at nite and found this thread so sorry to breath new life into it....
I have 2 Australian Shepherds, which are nicknamed "Aussies" however I only had one "pup" at the time I joined. The one that is in my avitar. Not to be confused with living downunder (at least from the US).

krepta
26th of September 2007 (Wed), 04:02
Krepta was a character in the "My Teacher Is An Alien" series of books published by Scholastics. In particular, he was an alien who helped the human side. I read these books in elementary school and "krepta" (lower-case 'k') has been my alter ego since. Strangely enough, I often find upon signing up for anything at all on the internet, that "krepta" is already taken and I have to resort to add a number or letter. Here at POTN, however, I was fortunate not to run into another one!

Nyobie
2nd of December 2007 (Sun), 18:12
My favorite character in the movie, The Matrix is Captain Niobe. I wasn't sure how she spelled her name so I guessed and got it wrong by spelling it Nyobie which I think is a little easier to remember how to spell.
I kept the name anyway after I found out that there was a Greek Goddess named Niobe who had 14 children. The children died tragically due to their mother's arrogance, so I had come to learn about after I chose the name. I was glad to have spelled the name incorrectly when I found out about the story.
I'm not African American despite what people might think about the character I chose. I'm half Korean and half Caucasian... You'd never guess by the name!

I joined my first BBS during the late 80's. I had an old CRT monitor with an "RGB" logo on it in front of me while signing up and was at a complete loss when asked for nickname on the online form. I've used RGB or some form of it ever since...

Scuff
5th of January 2008 (Sat), 19:12
Scuff is a nickname at work - that's me on a bike in my avatar. It comes from me 'getting my knee down' before it became popular. The picture was in a full spread in Fast Bikes magazine when I took out the Emmett brothers for an evaluation ride.
The 'guvnors' weren't too happy about me wearing a hole in the job leathers :)

sin4jon
6th of January 2008 (Sun), 15:28
It was my very first screen name on A-O-H*LL back in 1994. I pretty much have it everywhere. Except work and that online garage sale/auction place. It's my first tattoo. "Sin" is a song from Nine Inch Nails. I always liked the song and when I saw the artwork on the vinyl single I knew it was going to be my first tattoo. It was done by Bob Garrity. He is the nephew of an old boss of mine from a bank. He did it in his parents' basement. So there is that part.
4 has two meanings. The single is also titled as Halo 4. Each album or single is Halo followed by a number. Also means for.
Jon is my name and enjoying life is my game! That sounded so much better in my head!

I have a very long surname, so it's a contraction of my initials and the last name. Boring, but true!!! Also because no-one can actually remember how to spell my last name I use this as my professional tag.

When I came on this thread I didn't intend to linger. But it is really addictive to read the meaning of the names.
Poaceae is the botanic name for the grass family. I have been involved in a grass identification project for the last 2 years and since the name never gets rejected because someone else has picked it . . . . .
