It's a name from my gaming life.
I mis-typed my name registering for an online fps a few years back and it stuck.
birdfromboat
27th of September 2009 (Sun), 15:00
I file my photos by the year, month, a descriptive filename like "river run, salem to corvallis" and then an image title for anything that gets printed. The print gets the date of capture written on the back so I can retreive the file for more prints later. I think this is a workable system, but noticed that I had about ten dozen images titled 'birdfromboat' .

Jerry Mathers was the real name of a TV star out of the 50's & 60's. The show was called "Leave It To Beaver" After everyone else was Intro'd to the show -- and Jerry Mathers as "The Beaver".
mathogre
1st of October 2009 (Thu), 21:22
mathogre - or, Evil Math Ogre Kgh-Ra.
It's an anagram of my real life full name, Graham Keith Glover. Given I'm also a mathemagician, the "math" part fits particularly well. (At work, high level management has introduced me to business partners and customers as the Resident Mad Scientist. :D)

I assume that it was an American show and, as it was not broadcast over here, it meant absolutely nothing to me I'm afraid.

Mine is from college...
Way back when I was a freshman and the computer admins assigned our emails, the standard format was 1) the first 5 letters of your last name, 2) first initial, 3) middle inital. [If someone already has that assigned, you were given a number thrown in there too.]
Today, it would be different since I am married & took the hubby's last name but I hold to it as part of my "younger" days.

VK2GWK is my amateur radio call sign. The "VK" says I am in Australia, the "2" makes it more precise... I am in the state of New South Wales, while "GWK " are the personal indicator linked to my amateur radio license.
Amateur radio is my other hobby: experimenting with electronics and making contacts with other ham radio operators all over the world.
This is a picture of the other gear I am using....

13th of December 2009 (Sun), 22:59
A friend in college gave me the nickname...not sure why, but I think it had something to do with a goofy college engineering project that had a "mad scientist" quality to it. Since "Mad Adam" (Adam being my first name) sounded too much like "Mad At 'Em", He said he needed to use something else. My middle name (shortened) seemed to do the trick.

John the Geek
18th of December 2009 (Fri), 15:43
I'm a graphic and traditional artist, and I am a Mac client and server specialist at work. So at one point I coined the term "the geek" and "the artist" to describe my two loves. So now my usernames are either "John the Geek" or "John the Artist" depending on the forum. I don't know why I chose "Geek" here... I guess it's because in the past other artists sometimes take offense to my username, as if I'm implying I'm the only artist - which I'm not. And I do get pretty geeky about camera gear, new toys as they are, so it still fits. It's a merger of the two loves.

My nick is easy - if you happen to be a ham. I post on other boards with my initials or name (JC or JackC) but on BIG boards - like this one - that is just way too common, and I can't be bothered making up something odd. The callsign makes it easy.
Besides, aren't all hams also photographers, and vice versa??

shaftmaster
28th of March 2010 (Sun), 08:20
Mine was the result of a cheap wah-wah pedal (an electric guitar effect), a fascination for the "Theme From Shaft" by Isaac Hayes that features wah-wah guitar, and too much beer, which resulted in my rap name MC Shaftmaster Toneboost. My other musician friends started calling me shaftmaster, so the name stuck.
CafeRacer808
28th of March 2010 (Sun), 14:02
I ride cafe racer style motorcycles and since "CafeRacer" was already taken, I added the "808" at the end, which is a nod to both the Roland TR-808 drum machine (the grandaddy of electronic music) as well as the UK electronic group 808State.
libbyneder
28th of March 2010 (Sun), 14:43
For years my screen name for everything was "Lusciousmango." It was the name on the box of color I used when I started dying my hair in highschool when the internet was brand new. That was over a decade ago, and I've since changed everything to my real name, or some variant thereof to be taken more seriously (thus the current name). I'm still a redhead, though.

RiaGirl - "ham" is a common nickname for an amateur Radio operator. When Code was King (actually, when it was the only possible thing), the hobbyists were called "ham-fisted" or "hams" by the "professionals". Being somewhat obtuse at times (or just outright stupid at others), we decided we liked the name so we took it - much to the chagrin of the professionals. :-D

thatkatmat....a combo of 3 unique words...."That", meaning like I'm pointing at something or someone..."kat" is, of course, cat, spelled wrong..... and "Mat" is well, Matt, spelled wrong, put them together and you are left with 3 words transformed into one longer, yet, I think.... better word. Which I decided to use in lieu of my real name somedogralph

bloodhound
31st of March 2010 (Wed), 16:56
I've been using Bloodhound as a pseudonym for decades, in fact since CB radios were all the rage here in the UK in the late 70s. It comes from witnessing the test firing of a Bloodhound surface to air guided missile off the coast of Wales when I was there on a holiday back in the sixties. It was an amazing site that I remember vividly.

In the early days of the net, I always used "geoff" because it was easy and it was almost always unused (advantages of being an early adopter!). But when things exploded, it was rarely available, so I switched to using first initial/last name for everything, which always works thanks to my unusual last name.
I've thought about trying to swtich to a cleverer one, at least on this forum, but then I'd have to actually be a clever person... :-P

Mine's my Gamer Tag.

Well, my name is not very simple, so.....
Other than photography my big passion is paragliding, which I've been doing since 1996. I have a pilot's licence (though for paragliding only) and consider myself to be fairly good at flying without an engine.
The top pilots are called "Skygods", and though I'm not in their league, one of my sources of income is via weddings....and since my father was a priest before his death, using the term "Skygod" has a nice feel to it for me.
And the "44"?
In the Japanese system of counting, I was born in the year "Showa 44"....which to more sensible people means 1969.

mine is from a quote I found years ago that struck me....

Not quite sure why it struck me, but it did and I've used the name Emma Celeste for years as a screen name. :)

All one word in lowercase because it's easier to type when logging in. I figure it could save me about ten minutes over the course of my life when compared to using caps and a space bewteen the first and last name.
I just wasted one of those ten minutes posting on this thread.:p

I made this name in 2004 when I got my first guitar, and I couldn't really think of anything else to use, so I've been using this wherever I go. So if you see a GuitarFreak, there's a good chance it's me :D
ducklabdad
6th of May 2010 (Thu), 06:04
I was given mine when I bought our first "family computer" and was setting up our account. I set me and both my two kids up with thier "screennames" and they picked mine out, they were 5 and 7 at the time.
We raised and kept Labrador retrievers and we had an aviary where we raised ducks and I was an avid duck hunter as well. So they gave me the screen name ducklabdad. The two kids are now 23 and 25 but I have continued to use this screenname for everything.

Lush or drunkard sounded too plebeian.
Many years ago I joined a forum owned by a guy named Dean, who was called "Dean-o" as in Dean Martin. But his screen name was Dno - a little easier to type, I guess. When I had to pick a screen name for that forum, Yno popped into my head, and I use it for all the forums I join.

Never saw this thread, guess i'll chime in.
The "bucket" is a seat assignment on the fire engine I work on. The bucket seat is one of the rear jump seats where the "firefighter" rides. The Lieutenant drives and the Captain rides in the front passenger seat.
So, at shift change people usually ask "who is the bucket man?" or "who is riding the bucket?"
I guess it comes from some of the small/cheap flip down seats in some of the old Grummans we have, kinda like riding on a bucket.
So, thats me...BucketMan.

15th of September 2010 (Wed), 23:36
Given to me by a Newspaper reporter when I was living in Lake Charles, LA. I was fighting with the Police Jury (City Council) and the subject of where I was born was brought up by one of the Jury members. Not that where I was born should have anything to do with the issue being presented to the Jury. So, I told them was born in CA but my Dad was born in Louisiana. For some reason that seem to make a difference to them and I won my case. The reporter for the local paper printed "Calicajun beats Police Jury" and the name just stayed with me.
Old-Duckman
16th of September 2010 (Thu), 18:22
I own 6 Ducati motorcycles. Ducatis are often called "Ducks" by Ducati owners and other motorcyclists.
I was signing up for a Ducati Monster (Monster is a model of Ducati) and "Duckman" was taken (I like the old Duckman cartoon too and it sorta fit). Well I figured that I was probably older than 90% of the Monster owners on that site (at the time I was 50)...Thus the "Old-Duckman". I use it on every forum I belong to.
I always like these screen name threads, some interesting reasons...and some very mundane.

On the contrary I'd say having a quirky screenname is about not taking things too seriously. Life's too short for seriousity. I have a dozen screennames for all the forums I'm on, most common being Cyclops because I literally have just the one eye-maybe I should have used that here!

Wow... when I started this post back in 2005 I NEVER would have thought it would fill 57 pages! I recently stumbled into these forums again and couldn't believe this post was still around! Amazing...

Not sure when I came by this nickname, but about 10 years ago I started shaving my head, figured it looked better this way (for me) versus the hair line in full retreat.

A Laird in Scotland is a land owner. Like a Lord I suppose.
I was born and bred in Scotland but worked overseas for many years and now have returned.

There's already quite a famous photog running around with the same name, so rather than explain I am not him/he is not me for the 1,000,000th time, I chose a character from Norse Mythology I enjoyed studying.

26th of March 2011 (Sat), 09:51
I've lived in Florida since 1966, so I'm a fan of the UF Gators. I sent 2 of my daughters to UF. It's common practice here to have some kind of "gator" nickname.
About 16 years ago my 1st grandson, who couldn't quite talk yet, was sitting on my lap. I said very seriously to him "I'll be your buddy." He looked up at me & said "bubby". From that moment I was called Bubby by all the family.
Thus, bubbygator.
Lonestarlady61
10th of April 2011 (Sun), 13:22
Well as others have mentioned I got tired of all the screen names being taken. So I chose Lonestarlady since Texas is where I'm from and then a number since Lonestarlady was already taken.

Roadkill_6mm
17th of December 2011 (Sat), 17:18
well mine is a nickname which was given to me years ago in my youth when I was into Airsoft. I needed a name and someone said Roadkill. Usually Roadkill is taken on just about every forum, but the 6mm bit comes from airsoft too. Add the 2 together and I have a name which never seems to be taken!!

I've kept this moniker from since way back.
At the time of its creation, the suite of tools our company used for computer aided design of I.C.'s (Integrated Circuits or computer chips) was called Opus.
So it's not pronounced i.co.pus or i.cop.us. It's i.c.opus. But I'll answer to however you pronounce it. :)

I've shot Canon almost exclusively since I began photography back around '86 with a AE-1P & FD50/1.8. I made this name for Ebay buying about 12 years ago, and was shocked it was available here just a few months ago! I did venture out a bit with a wonderful TLR Mamiya C33 w/105/3.5 I still have.

27th of December 2011 (Tue), 09:44
When I first registered with forums my interest was NASCAR racing. When I joined the first one, NASCAR was sponsored by Winston cigarettes, so I was wcfan, then Nextel became the title sponsor so I changed to ncfan. With the merging of Nextel with Sprint, I became scfan.
On the aviation and gun forums I am on I am 67N20, my military occupational specialty when I was in the Army
JasonMK
2nd of May 2012 (Wed), 12:29
Back in the day I needed an AOL screen name for their dial up service (1995?). Jason was already taken, so being the creative man that I was I added a middle and last initial to my first name and my screen name was born. Every 30 days I needed a new one and ended up with JasonMK2, JasonMK3, JasonMK4, JasonMK5, JasonMK... (you get the point).
Now I've dropped the numbers on most forums. I'm kind of bummed that JasonMK was already taken on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/people/karampatsos/) and added a "TM" to the end.

Played baseball and softball my whole life ( short or 3rd). When a ball was hit in the gap, I would always yell to my team mate "Get Dirty!" ( Dive). To pump up my team I would always ask them if they were ready to get dirty. Stuck with me since I was a young one and they started calling me Dirt. Now that my kids are in sports I always tell them to " Get dirty". Love shooting sports, so Dirty Lens it was.

Sigh- Mine I'm not so fond of any more lol. Created it way back in the 8th grade when I had just started playing hockey (and was OBSESSED) with it. When I created my first email account, hockeyplayer was already taken, so I had to go gangsta- and 13 is my self chosen "lucky number" (was born on Friday the 13th ;)). Wish I could change it now to the one I have started using for everything else- thompssc (combo of first and last name).
Farley121
27th of May 2012 (Sun), 01:31
Farley was a nickname I got in high school due to badly mispronouncing my last name, and catching me reading a Farley Mowat novel. The "121" was added years ago when another forum already had a Farley.

I'm Sasquatch
27th of May 2012 (Sun), 03:17
I'm 6'6", 270lbs and live fairly close to areas of claimed Bigfoot sightings. I'm not very hairy and bathe regularly so that might negate my Sasquatch claims. Rumor has it that I'm the first generation in my family to walk upright.
