Why did everyone choose the name we did? And what does it mean?
My name is an Ibo name meaning 'Death may please himself'. The reason i chose it is personal.

Well mine wansn't difficult too :-) Raj is my given name :-)

Mills
28th of March 2005 (Mon), 23:24
In fourth grade, my best friend started calling me Mills instead of Miller (or Scott for that matter). It stuck. I'm 40 now and my close friends all call me Mills. My wife even does.

One fine evening, before i had the internet, i was in 6th grade, i asked my mom if i could to the library to create this thing my friends were calling, an email.

I'm not real sure why i needed it, but i figured i should get one.

So i sit down and they tell me that i had to come up with a name. "Tim" was already taken. So then i decided to get creative. I thought of my family, john my brother popped into my head. Then i went off into a tangent about the game johnny quest that came with my dads new amazing computer, it was a whole 350mhz!

Then it struck me. Timmyquest...

I then started using it everywhere, for everything, next thing i know there are people who frequented similer types of message boards that i did. It started out with paintball message boards.

Then some of the guys i saw on the paintball message boards, i saw on the computer message boards. I didnt want to change my name because i wanted people to remember that i was the guy who was asking about the new paintball gun.

Next thing i know, i'm 19 years old and i've had the same name for this entire time.

You may think having this name for so long represents my desire to still be a kid. Thats simply not the truth, it's simply because i dont want to deal with changing it in so many places.

By the way, i still play paintball to feel like a kid every once and a while ;-)

JAZZ D.P.G. is a play on my initials and what I do with a camera and computer. It is also the registered name of my business (not a profitable venture yet, but will be in my retirement)

Jim A. Stevenson Digital Photo Graphic. JAZZ is much catchier (memorable) that J.A.S.

I'm filipino and my last name is Ucab. I am bigger than the average filipino, so my friends started calling me Ubig . . . hence, Markubig.

Oh yeah, my other nickname is Ogre, hence my Schreck avatar.

While I'm at it, my AIM screenname is ubigogre (You Big Ogre!!!)

and that's the story of my life http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue3.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue3.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue3.gif

I got tired of all the screen names I wanted being taken everywhere, and since I've always been a heavy online gamer, I needed a lot of screen names, so sometime last year I think I just started typing away trying to make up something that would never be taken, and wound up with this, I thought it sounded/looked decent and it's an acceptable length for just about everything, so I kept it. My real name's Chris if anyone's curious.

Moppie
29th of March 2005 (Tue), 04:15
Its an old, old nickname, given to me by an old employer.
Pretty much everyone I know now calls me Moppie, even my g/f use's it from time to time.
So when dail up internet first became popular here in NZ in the late 90s it seem appropiate to use it first as an email, then as a forum name.

I have a given name, but Ill be damned if I can remember what it is....

thomascanty
29th of March 2005 (Tue), 04:51
Back in 1982 when i first got online with the local BBS systems, I started using the name Tom Sawyer because I've always been a fan of Mark Twain. When I discovered the Internet in 1993, I tried using that name everywhere also, but it was too popular and I kept coming across new places where it was already taken. So, I decided to use a more obscure Mark Twain character name instead. Tom Canty was the poor kid in his book The Prince and the Pauper. I haven't seen a "Name already in use" error yet when signing up someplace new, even though I later found out there's a popular artist by this name. I sometimes wonder if he gets that error though. :D

The very first forum I joined was Tech-TV's The Screen Savers board so when I needed to come up with a username, at that time I was a dude with a Dell so using very little imagination I went with Mikes Dell, aka "Mikesd".

pyterps

Mine comes from being an Air Traffic Controller and a TERminal Instrument Procedures Specialist (TERPS). The first two letters is the first and last initial of my last name. As and Air Traffic Controller everyone has to end every conversation with another controller with operating initials which are normally the first and last initial of the last name. PerrY.

So along came "PYTERPS"

Cool thread!!!!

I have a side thing selling automotive tools, mostly for Porsche and Volkswagen. Not ratchets and screwdrivers, but the 'cool' tools that do a specific job. I'm not much of a forum junkie, so I didn't think of coming up with a photo name when I got on here, I just used the name I use when I do a car show.

Have Fun,

Longwatcher
29th of March 2005 (Tue), 09:05
I picked my handle based on several things. I picked it way back when I was playing with the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA).

Given the following:
- I was an USAF Imagery Anaylst
- Until in my late 30s I could see farther then most people (by a lot)
- I tend to take the long view and look at all aspects of a problem when possible
- And I always liked play scout in field battles.

Longwatcher seemed most appropriate. Plus it is unique to me alone.
I maintain only that alias as I have to report any alias (including screen names) when ever I do my 5-year security updates, so Timothy Longwatcher is all I have to give them.

Lastly, having just a small touch of Cherokee (1/64th) in my genetics it sounds a bit Cherokee and I like that as aspect as well although that was not why I picked it.

A bit of advanaced trivia: When I first got a domain name, I picked longwatcher.net as I felt I was not an organization and was not commercial at that time. A couple years later, I decided to go for .com, but someone had sucked that up (along with .org). I later found it was one of those folks that bought every domain name they could think of. They were offering it to me for $1000 US, I said no thanks don't need it. Since nobody bought it, not unexpected by me given that I am likely the only one to use that handle; he let it lapse and about 3 years ago I decided to look again, found the .com available and scarfed it up along with .org. So now I have .net, .com, and .org for Longwatcher. I use .net for personal site, .com for photography and .org just for the heck of it.

Just using my name - Pradeep + 1....not very creative. My name actually has two meanings. In normal vernacular south Indian languages, my name would mean "First Light". I took a Buddhist Vipassana meditation course back in 2001 and I was told that in the now defunct Pali language....the one the Buddha spoke in....my name means "Light of the World", and was one of the 13 monikers that Buddha went by. I have a been a follower of Buddha, and was very happy to hear that.

Same as a few others, way back when (93, 94 can't remember) and I'm registering for a hotmail account so I have an email that won't die when I leave university. It was the first thing that I came up with that hadn't been taken. Seemed suitably generic for an internet ID, and was inspired by the UK sitcom of the same name.

Haven't used hotmail in ages, but the account is still active as an instant messenger login.

stoneylonesome
29th of March 2005 (Tue), 19:16
Having given up on using my given name or parts thereof I tried to come up with something unique. Well being kind of a Railroad buff, especially the older adandoned lines that went through my area, I decided on stoneylonesome. Stoneylonesome is a section of track about 5 miles long in Norfolk CT, back in the days of the Connecticut Western and later the Central New England RR. It went around the backside of a mountain in Norfolk where no one lived, when they cut the track in they just cast over the side all the stone and rock. So because of the isolation of the area and the amount of rocks the train engineers refered to it as the "stoneylonesome". Only once did I have a problem signing on with it so I just shortened it to stoney and added a couple of numbers.

Claire
30th of March 2005 (Wed), 06:08
"Claire" is my second name and derives from Latin (but with French spelling), meaning "clear", "bright" and/or "famous". My first name "Nouna" means "ninth". Surname is Andersson, i.e. Anders' son. Traditional Swedish name. :)

I chose "Claire" here because was tired of my other online nicknames. :)

Wow, just did a search online. There are only three people named "Nouna" in Sweden. 49 with the original "Nona" spelling. Cool!

FlyingPete
30th of March 2005 (Wed), 16:28
OK, FlyingPete is an older nick name no one I regularly associate with uses anymore, but it comes from an incident a few years back now when I went mountain biking with some of the guys from work, I missed judged a jump at the end of the track, made some good air time, can't say much for the landing though, hospital for a week, and two months off work. It was also around that time that I was messing with Helicopter pilot training, ended up being to much $$$.

It is better than some others I have had - Moss, for PeatMoss, Bin Lowden (circa late 2001, also why we wouldn't name our first son Ben), and more recently around work - Captain Random, for my ability to make completely random comments on about anything.

By the way did you know that the singer Sting got his name whilst in the Police, as he used to wear a black and yellow stripped jersey that made him look like a bumble bee.

Anyway, most people just call me Pete.

Conk is short for Conklin. When I was a little kid I had long red hair. My Brothers and sister called me Conklin. Conklin shows is an amusement company provided the CNE in Toronto and various fairs with the midway rides. They have a mascot. I guess my brothers thought I looked like this mascot. Today at 39 my brothers and family still call me Conk.

JohnEBongo
31st of March 2005 (Thu), 08:56
My first name is John. That lends itself very naturally to nicknames, especially when you add the ny to get Johnny. Add just about anything to "Johnny" and you have a nick-name, and I have had many. "Johnny Cosmo" and "Johnny Fairway" are just a couple. Well, one night I was at a bar with some friends and after a couple too many I jumped on stage with the band and started playing their bongos. I hit those things so hard I actually broke them. At that moment Johnny Bongo was born. I decided to shorten it to JohnEBongo fo rthe purposes of screen names and the like......

After completeing basic training where I was mainly called, ' Oi ', as was everybody else, I was posted to Germany whereupon I graduated to Smudge, as did evrybody else called Smith. Luckily there was only one other Smudge in my troop, so he was Smudge and I was Junior. He left some years later, and I became the senior Smudge and layed full claim to the title. Several ' Juniors ' were forced to fight it out when I left.

Way back when I started to use the internet I chose a name from what is probably my favorite book, only at the time it had too many letters so I shortened it a bit.

For some reason I keep on using it.

In case you wondered the book is Enders Game by Orson Scott Card.

Neat fact, I share a name with and have been told I look close to the guy in the avatar. :-)

My real name is Nick, some of my mates call me Nitsch (pronounced Neesch). No logic behind it, we were messing around one day and someone came out with it and it kind of stuck!

It makes for a good username as Nick is too common but Nitsch always seems to be available! :)

Carzee
9th of April 2005 (Sat), 05:55
This thread's gone cold... but here's 2 possible explanations for my username;

1. On a famous (now defunct) forum based loosely around the Japanese hobby of inventing curious gadgets and modern living aids which are WAY over the top, high farce in fact, I used this same username..... at the high point of my 22 hour-a-day addiction to the aforementioned forum I had a brainwave -after a ton of consumer electronic research - I hit upon a great new invention for the modern busy executive and miscellaneous office types and... are you still reading this or have you skimmed down to option number 2?

2. Boot camp nickname, a truncation, derived from my surname.

Okay, you know you want to know... just what was it? What was that invention and did I get a presented with the annual best invention award... and did the Japanese presenter pronounce my username all wrong because it has an 'R' in it?

Well, researching the Jap businessman demographic, I found that they made many business trips yet they always strived to maintain their self-sufficiency and their self discipline - they wear ultra neat office clothing, yet they must have very compact luggage. So I invented the "Air Traveller's Inflatable Ironing Board". Using the highest quality flurescent nylon plymers, it was at once colorful, extremely lightweight and portable, and since it was, in a sense, disposable (single use), it was good hygenic practise also. If you've bothered reading this much you now have evidence of my quirky imagination and my ultra dry sense of humor. Thats what I've been told anyway...

See?

The "Mad" in madtony has a double meaning- Mad like a mad scientist, which is a fitting description, and also mad in reference to my temper, which is years past was much worse than it is now. (I am actually quite laid backnow...REALLY!) The tony is short for Anthony, my middle name. (MadTony sounded better than MadAdam.) I have used it on many forums, so if you hung out on the whitewater kayaking forum Boatertalk, you may recognize me.

MDJAK: Some people on other forums have mistaken me for a doctor= Dr. Jack.

Furthest from the truth. Unfortunately, though I wanted to be a cardiothoracic surgeon when I was a kid (my sister was a nurse and I used to meet her at work and have dinner so I met lots of doctors who were always trying to pick her up), I was a slight slacker in school.

MDJAK is the first initials of my and my family members' names: Mark, Dorothy, Jeremy, Amanda and Kaycee. I've had it since I got on AOL in 1992.

TCK adventures started out as a bit of a joke. As a family (only 3) we started bushwalking and when Christmas time came around i thought it cool to get everyone a T-shirt with a logo of a wombat and TCK adventures on it, as it included the first initial of each of our names. It has been with the family for a few years now and even put TCK in the phone book.

As I said, this happened many years ago, but since then, with very few exceptions (actually only one, glocktalk, where I've got Rob61 - but I have the same avatar) I just stick to it. Easier to remember only one username. Passwords are all different tho ;)

In middle-school I used to have a huge afro. I was the only (and first) non african-american to have an afro at my school. I didn't mean to have an afro, that's just how my hair grew when it got long so all of my friends started calling me fro-man. Whenever I would try to pick up girls, they would call me fromeo. The 98 comes from the year I registered my hotmail address. It used to be fro_man96 but someone hacked into that account and so I created fro_man98. :)
