What's the best software only calibration to use on a slim budget?

If you have Photoshop (CS, Elements or other version), you also have Adobe Gamma installed (look for it in the Windows Control Panel).

If you don't have Adobe Gamma, look here for a list of options: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html#Gamma_CMS
for example, Praxisoft WiziWYG (http://www.praxisoft.com/pages/products.wiziwyg.html) is free.

But note that software-only profiling will not get you a very accurate profile - you're using your own eyes as the measuring device, and your own eyes are not very accurate at judging colour. How you see colour depends a lot on the ambient light, the things you've been looking at the last few minutes and even how tired you are and how much coffee you drank.

I profiled my monitor with Adobe Gamma before I bought a Spyder colorimeter and the profile I made with the Spyder is MUCH more accurate than what I got with Adobe Gamma. So don't expect wonders from software-only calibration and profiling...
