I just succumbed to the ol' shoot-a-newspaper thing sorry to say, but I decided to do it with all my lenses after I found my 10-22 was WAY off at the 10 mm end. 22 was really good but either the auto focussing or the lens itself was really muzzy at the 10mm end.(actually not with the 70-200L as that is so obviously SHARP)

I took the shots in less than perfect light conditions, i.e. indoor light and used flash as well, set the camera to Av.with a tripod and self timer. Here's what i found with tthe 50mm 1.4 lens:
Autofocus-1.4 soft but ok(what you'd expect) manual focus 1.4 completely blurred  AF for the rest-2.8 + 5.6 blurred, (I noticed it seemed to hunt a bit ) f8 still a bit soft.
Focussed on a different point f8, 5.6,2.8, all very sharp
Changed to portrait position (i.e.focussing on a different point again) f1.4 clear but soft(as you'd expect) 2.8, 5.6, 8 INCREDIBLY sharp, still clear magnified to 800% and up, i.e sharp right up to individual pixel size.
I noticed that the exposure changed for the same f stop sometimes e.g.25th and 20th @1.4. 3.2 secs and 2.5 secs @ f11.

What I learned: AF is unreliable in low light. Manual focus is even less reliable than AF when you eyes aren't what they were. Focus is CRITICAL to sharp pics.
