I am thinking about tring to trade of my 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM for a 20D. I know the money is about right and I have found out that I prefer the 70-200 f/4L more and would like to have the speed of a 20D with grip would be nice.

Why not sell it on the board for 1200 dollars.
You know that if you trade it in. They won't give you the proper money for it.
You can list it here, fred miranda, and other boards. I am more than sure you can get good money for it.. Then sell the Drebel, and add that money on top of the 1200, and you can get the 20d with the 17-85 kit.
This is what I did, something similar. I sold my Canon G3, and bought my dads Minolta A2 from him, and sold it on ebay for 600+, 200 dollar + profit. Then took the money from the Canon G3 (350), and put it with the 600, and then just put the difference down in cash for the 20D body with no lens.
It can be done bro, but trading in is not the way to go.

Interesting to read your comments about trading equipment in at camera shops in the states,
sounds much the same as here in the U k, Pretty awful. & if it were film cameras to trade I can assure you its even worse.
A lot of shops wont even take in second hand digital, especially compact types.
not supprising Ebay does so well.

Looking at your kit list it possibly would make sense to trade / sell some for a 20 D, But if it were my decision no way would it be the 100 to 400 is L and also you have quite a useful tool in 70 - 200 f 2.8 sigma and 70 - 200 f4 L.
Choice is yours at the end of the day, but big collection of heavy glass there

Thanks maybe the best solution is to start saving I was just thinking that would be the quick way into a 20D that would not cost me anymore. I really do like the 100-400L but most of my shooting I do with the 70-200's either indoor or out. There is to many people talking about how great the 20D is that I really want one and I hate to wait...LOL just have to figure a way around the girlfriend how did that excuse go.... No honey this is the same camera I just painted it all black...LOL

Just my personal take, but I'm in a similar situation owning a DReb. I'd love a 20D, but there's just not enough to justify an upgrade. I'd wait for a more signigicant step up. Think of it this way--in a couple years the 100-400 will still fetch you $1100-1200 where the 20D will be worth $600(?). Sell the 100-400 then, get a better camera(12Mp?) and you get a couple years shooting with the lens for waiting. Guess it depends how badly you want the 20D--I know how that goes!

Hi Guys
this camera body thing is all about you feeling it will produce better results with a better more advanced body.
So each time Canon or Nik-- produce new bodies of Desire we cant resist, or can we ??
the day the new body arrives do not be fooled into thinking our pictures will improve, sure it may capture more pixels at a faster speed with better flash facilities etc. etc.
Now on the lens side of things if you dont own a really wide angle, but shoot a lot of room interiors
the body swap will not help you (unless going for 1 series 1.3 x crop or full frame ) sort the outfit and become competant using it before moving on.
experiance / tecknique /pictorial all need practice.
if one day your viewing some professionals images and think your work to be of similar quality, just get out there and buy the best there is and enjoy. or better still sell your work .
I jumped from D60 to 1D mk 2 because i needed a second body and there really is a learning curve with this sort of jump. 3 months on and now more than happy but was a time when considered returning .
last point allow for pos computor upgrade, dont expect all machines will cope with larger files etc.
Cheers
