You can't have it all :(
I don't think there is an appreciable difference in the two lenses,. and I don't think the word "quality" can be associated with either.
If portability is your primary concern... then I'd say get the oe that fits your budget. I actually had the older version of the Sigma CHZ.. and I got by with it for some time. But now I'd strongly suggest you sacrifice some zoom range and get something more robust.
Take a look at the -=TOP 10=- recomended lens sticky thread,. and see what the votes are for starter lenses. Maybe there are some better choices for your trip ther, like the 28-135mm or the Tamron 28-75mm or even the Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8

I've used the canon but not that exact model sigma (i've used several other sigma hyperzooms)
Overall these types of lenses can be very usefull and conveniant *if* you can cope with the image quality. In absolute terms they have slightly less resolution than kit lenses such as the EF-s 18-55,EF75-300, EF 28-80,etc
They simply don't get enough 'keeper' images for me so i won't be considering buying another -but others might

The canon will have more contrast than the sigma (it's the way sigma lenses tend to allways be ,personally i don't mind the look)
