just bought powershot sd500 & when installing solution disk software i get two error messages: "camera window DVC dialogue box - could not find any previously installed compliant products on the machine for installing this product" & the same message in the "camera window DS" dialogue box. zoombrowser EX continues & completes the install.

after completing the install, when i connect the camera to the USB port & open zoombrowser I can't acquire images from the camera - zoombrowser 5.1 can't seem to detect the camera and CameraWindow is inoperable. the sd500 appears in scanners & cameras in the control panel & i can download images from other software, ie "Microsoft scanner/camera wizard".

was on the phone with canon tech. support for almost 2 hours last night to no avail. i believe it may be a registry permissions issue as a member of the G6 forum experienced the same problem with his or her newly purchased G6. can anyone offer a solution?

i'm running windows xp-home ed.

I have the exact same problem. I am downloading my images with some Dell software until I get this figured out.

Please post solution if you come up with it. I could certainly use it, too.

I have a similar problem. I can see the camera in "Scanners and Cameras" in the control panel and in "my computer", but the canon camera window program does not detect the camera.

I called tech support and was walked through uninstalling and installing, disabling services, etc. There was no change. The canon software still does not see the camera. I also installed it on my laptop and the software didn't recognize it there either. The tech guy said I needed to send the camera in for repair that there is probably a power issue with the camera.

I just received this camera 3 days ago and to send it for repair is out of the question. I really do not think it is a problem with the camera, rather a problem with the software. Windows sees the camera fine, it just not recognized by the canon software. The only real reason I would use the canon software is to tweak the camera functions and to remote capture. I call the company I purchased it from to set up an RMA, I really hate to send the camera back, I really like it.

Canon needs to fix the software... I have a feeling that after I send the camera back and purchase another one, that I will still have the problem.

Any suggestions?

here's the good news ... my problem has been solved ... evidently canon does not adequately QA their software for compatibility with XP on every machine ... it is a windows XP registry permissions problem that requires slight edits to the registry. the bad news is that you have to get in touch with a canon support rep. that actually knows what they are doing b/c it became readily apparent to me that they don't communicate well with one another or have any internal procedures for reporting problems and applicable fixes (one guy tells me to re-install, etc. and the other guy goes straight for the registry).

keep pressing, mention the registry permissions issue and you will get this damn thing to work.

pisses me off that you spend nearly 500 bucks on a brand new, state of the art camera and the damn software isn't 100% compatible with the latest, greatest version of MS XP serv. pack 2 in all configs.

That sucks.

I completely agree that it is upsetting that they haven't tested it completely with the latest Service Pack for XP........................................

You should redirect you anger toward Big Boy Billy Gates. I am a programmer. I use Microsoft's tools tools to devolop software for use on computers running Wimpdows. You would think that Windows Updates, Patches, Service Pack, or whatever they want to call it would accomodate, or at least offer some backward compatability to the older versions. This just isn't so. As fast as wind changes direction (or a p&s is released) Microsoft changes their minds, continuously waffling on whether something in their OS is a "feature" or a "security issue." If they decide it is the latter, the update disables it (sometimes through the registry). Problem is, you created (or want to use) software based on that "feature" x months ago. Oh well. Perhaps you could post the path and values you added or edited to get this to work along with the typical warning, "Never edit the Registry unless..."
Basically, this is what inevitably will eat at Mictosoft's market share: As it becomes more and difficult to develop 3rd party apps to work on Windows OSs, and we are forced to use their software, people will turn elsewhere for desktop OS solutions.

But probably not until MAC prices drop just a bit....

Ok guys, this is my first post but i think it will make a lot of you happy. If you DO NOT feel comforatible editing your Windows XP registry DONT do this. Other wise follow these steps and this WILL fix your problem . . . I will not accecpt any responcibility for a hosed system, do this at your own risk . . .

0. BEFORE YOU BEGIN BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY!!!

1. Launch the Registry Editor. To do this: START > RUN > type REGEDT32 > click OK.

2. Browse to the following key(folder): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Canon \ CameraWindow

3. Set permissions on the "CameraWindow" key (folder) to "FULL CONTROL" for "EVERYONE". To do this right click on the "CameraWindow" folder and select the option "Permissions" then click the "FULL CONTROL" box for each user listed.

4. Create "CameraWindowMC" sub-key(sub-folder) in "CameraWindow" key(folder). To do this: Right click on the "CameraWindow" key (folder), select new, Key. Then name it "CameraWindowMC"

5. Create "InstallPath" string in "CameraWindowMC" subkey, set installPath value to: C:\Program Files\Canon\CameraWindowMC\ To do this: Left click on the subkey (subfolder) CameraWindowMC then right click in the string area on the right hand side, select NEW > STRING name it CameraWindowMC then right click on the new string select MODIFY and the type in the value C:\Program Files\Canon\CameraWindowMC\

6. Leaving the Registry Editor open, uninstall the Camera Window by going to START > PROGRAMS > CAMERAWINDOW > CAMERAWINDOW UNINSTALL

7. Back in the Registry Editor Select the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM\U SB and set FULL CONTROL for everyone using the same steps mentioned in step 3.

8. Close REGEDT32 and reboot PC

9. Run the main installer from the supplied CD-ROM

10. Select Easy Install, during the installation the program will indicate that several programs have already benn installed, press ok and it will continue. This will install the Camera Window portions automatically and register it with ZoomBrowser.

11. Attempt to download images (restart computer if the camera is not detected.)

3. Set permissions on the "CameraWindow" key (folder) to "FULL CONTROL" for "EVERYONE". To do this right click on the "CameraWindow" folder and select the option "Permissions" then click the "FULL CONTROL" box for each user listed.

Yikes! A little security please. How about setting all users to full control? See picture below for help. Not an absolute neccessity, but it is a better solution. This means all users on that computer can do this, but remote users of any kind cannot.

It is nessessary to do as instructed to get the program to install, giving access is only for the specified folders which are only used with CameraWindow. If you are so paranoid about having these 2 keys available to be accessed by all users, then after the install is complete set permission back to what ever you want.

hi...i'm bumping this old thread because i'm dealing with the same issue with my just purchased sd500 and its' software

..and before i go mucking about in my registry i thought it might be a good idea to confirm that the fix anthalas9 posted is a valid one...seems odd that canon has let this go for so long without a patch...

thanx

Well...just a quick update...since i was not really confident in the instructions that canon support provided me in my e-mail inquiries to them about this issue..i decided to give the fix(anthalas9's) in this thread a try...and i'm happy to report that by following anthalas9's instructions precisely...my camarwindow software loaded as intended..and is fully registered not only with ZoomBrowser ex..but also WinXP..

my thanx to anathalas9...

i should also note that canon support was prompt and detailed in their attempts to resolve this issue...but they did not seem to have their databases updated on this permissions issue...odd that they would not have this well documented by now and accessible to all their support staff..

thanx again
wayne

Zoom Browser is up to 5.5, updating may help. If so far 5.0 and 5.1 have this problem maybe 5.5 will do the trick.

Dear Anthalas9,

I got the same error messages where the threat started. I have tried the registry change but without success. My problem is that the CameraWindow applications failed to install from the beginning and therefor have no CameraWindow application to uninstall as described in your method! Renew installation returns the same error messages as before.

Any ideas?

Problem is solved after XP repair installation and directly installing Zoombrowser 5.5. Upgrading from 5.2 produced (different) errors.

Marius,

I had a problem where camera window would not work. I suspected that since I installed the software previously for the Canon A75 and then upgraded the software with XT upgrades that that was the problem. I uninstalled all the canon programs, removed the c:\program files\canon directory and used RegScrubXP (free, what a cool tool) to remove registry entires associated with canon. Then I reinstalled.

Wha'la everything works fine know.

I've had similar problems but this solution did not help.
It turned out that uPNP was disabled on my machine. Apparently Canon requires this driver and thus it did not work. Enabling uPNP enabled the camera recognition.

For those who fear to have the same problem: run unPNP to check your current settings.

I'm having this same problem with my band new Canon ZR700 digital camera software. I'll try Anthalas' fix.

Try this if you use zoombrowser , camera window.

Go to start-Run and type " services.msc " and click ok.

Check if "Canon Camera Access Library 8" start up type is automatic. If not then double click on it and change to automatic.

Scroll down and do the same with " SSDP Discovery Service " and " WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) "

Restart computer and try to plug in the camera to the computer again.

I have a program called Tune up utilities 2006 installed in my computer and when i used it to tune up the system then the program changes this values, and camerawindow stopped to work after that.

This will probably help you with your zoombrowser and camerawindows problem.

I just bought an A630 and had the same problem as everyone else (my PC uses XP Pro). While I quailed at messing with the registry, I was more comfortable trying Sehlberg's approach. It turned out thatSSDP Discovery Service was the only of the three that wasn't on automatic. I changed the setting on that one and bingo - everything is fine.
