I'm looking forward to having the RAW to play with... Wonder if the appropriate version of ACR will work with Photoshop Elements 6, or if they'll try to force me to upgrade again?

Well hopefully that includes Canada! The increase in fps over the SX10 is one of a few reasons I have been hoping for this camera to come over here.
I have really been tempted to make the leap to dSLR from my S2 IS but the cost of even just the comparable zoom lens is out of reach let alone the cost to add to that zoom!
I also would miss movie mode and the tilt screen - I love it for shooting above your head or at odd angles.

I am sold on it just for the HD movies alone, I guess my FZ50 is going Bye Bye now, I was going to sell it and get a SX10 but the SX1 will be the camera for me now

Lets see, upgrade to new camera using two year old software that no is longer supported. Adobe's fault.

Ouch! Slow down a little here...
I wasn't complaining, merely observing that this was a device used by Adobe to force upgrades and wondering if I was going to be forced into upgrading. But as a software engineer I do feel that something stinks about ACR. I don't believe that the API between Elements and ACR changes with every release - I just think that some code checks are put in place to stop it working with older versions.
If someting breaks because of a genuine technical change, fine. But to deliberately break something just to make me upgrade... that's a marketing decision that I believe stinks.
As for your cheap download of PSE7, unfortunately that won't work for me. Adobe knows that I am in the UK and so it won't let me download it for US prices... instead it charges considerably more. Another marketing decision.
So once again, I'm not complaining - I bought what I bought and I shouldn't expect it to become able to do more over time. But the fact that there's no good technical reason why it should - instead it's just a marketing ploy to force the upgrade - riles me.

Yeah, I just notice that you are in Scotland and you are complaining. Why should a company have to still service software when it's no longer published? What about the device used by the camera companies when they introduce cameras at double the rate of the s/w companies. You don't have to buy it.
More people should be complaining the the Camera Companies are forcing people to use RAW and NEF, everybody should be using DNG.

Yeah, I just notice that you are in Scotland and you are complaining.
Yes, sure... if it keeps you happy.
Why should a company have to still service software when it's no longer published?
Turning it round, why should they go out of their way to prevent updates from working on older software?
More people should be complaining the the Camera Companies are forcing people to use RAW and NEF, everybody should be using DNG.
Some common standard, perhaps. Adobe took so long to bring out a DNG codec for Vista (have they even got a Vista 64 version yet) that I don't think we could trust them.

Just to update this, I had a look around and Adobe has not brought out a codec for DNG files on Vista 64.
They want us all to adopt their standard, but cannot even provide basic support on a major operating system variant.
I think that they have seriously blotted their copybook...

So you upgrade to 64, guess you just like torturing yourself? Wonder how much bitching you've done because of that? How many programs did you have to go buy because you just have to have the latest and greatest?
alan_potter
26th of February 2009 (Thu), 18:49
None because of Vista 64... WoW for 32-to-64 bit migration is exceptionally good... I guess Microsoft bought a lot of good knowledge on how to run 32 bit apps on 64 bit hardware from DECcies...
However, I did have to upgrade a couple of programs for Vista.

Can we please bring this back to the SX-1? There are scads of Microsoft forums . . . and we have a post-processing forum here for Adobe issues. But I've just ordered my SX-1 and I'd really like to hear more operational experiences with it.

Of course they would do this right after I purchased my sx 10 is. Looks like the sx 1 is pretty much the same except it has a few features I've been saying should've been on the sx10, like a REMOTE RELEASE!!!
Anyone wanna buy an sx 10?

Apart from RAW support, I also hope that the new firmware can improve the noise level of ISO 400 or above. And also bring back the time interval photography removed from S3 IS.
Cheers!

I am looking at this camera as well,
My concern is the AA battery I konw that I can get rechargeble, but is it as good as the battery used in the G series and the DSLR.
On the other hand Nikon just came out with the P90 with similar zoom and no raw but a rechargeable battery...
This is a hard decision for me...

This is a hard decision for me...As I've said elsewhere about the SX10, rechargeable AA cells do quite well.
I'm on my first charging of a set of Eneloops; several hundred photos and video clips and no sign of weakening. I consider having a camera that uses AA cells a safety net; I've had a charger for proprietary batteries go bad on me while I was traveling and unable to get a replacement. My A620 picked up a lot of the work my 5D and 20D would have otherwise done until I found a place (in Rhodes) that sold chargers for the BP-511. AA cells, and AA chargers, are easy to get.

For one main reason .. I like the double A batteries.
I live in Alaska and do remote river lake and ocean trips via raft, kayak, canoe and power boat. This means that I am not around a recharger most of the time and do not have space or time to mess with a solar charger.
The main reason I like double A,.is that All of my other eletronic equipment takes double A, like my GPS from Garmin, my flashlights, etc. I make sure that I have a nice pack of fresh double A's and this way I don't have to be concerned about charging different battery selections. Also, when I travel abroad to different places like south America, I can almost always find Double A in any store.
When I am not home, I do not mess with recharge batteries.
I was very pleased with Canons decission to use the standard Double A's for those reasons..
Thanks

Totally agree, but read somewhere that the SX1 also is a battery hog. Twice that of the SX10.

Is the video like the 5D Mark II video - i.e. limited to manual focus, no aperture controls, etc.???
alan_potter
3rd of March 2009 (Tue), 11:10
The video will refocus during filming - I haven't looked into aperture control.
As for batteries, I like the AAs. However, I found that it did very poorly in a Scottish winter at, say, -5C. The "low battery" warning would come on very quickly. Take the camera indoors and the warning would disappear and stay off for a long period of use...

Most batteries do poorly at low temperatures, then revive at room temp., so that's nothing to worry overly about. Just keep a spare set in an inside pocket and swap them in while re-warming the other set.

It's out now -- grab it here: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/dcp/firm-e/pssx1is/index.html
Warning: It resets everything on your camera to the factory defaults, so if you happened to have picked your SX1 IS from Japan, it'll revert back to Japanese menus. Be sure you have your English-language manual handy or remember how to set the language on your camera.
Cheers,
Andrew

Any branded rechargeables that I have tried seem to work okay... I'd probably look for 2,500mAh or higher.
I found that they don't work well in cold conditions (sub-zero - Celsius). But that may not be too much of an issue Daytona Beach...

I have seen a few places that say it is to be released this month, but no firm dates. Does anyone have more of an idea of a true release date? I guess that is the way of electronics, I suppose.
I have asked for this camera as a Mother's Day/early Christmas present, and possibly also as my early birthday present, since my b/day is right after Christmas! To help out a bit, I have already put my S5 IS up for sale on Ebay. I am hoping not to have to go a REALLY long time without a camera. (I can always sneak our son's 40D, and take a few shots, if necessary!)

Do you have any immediate thoughts in regards to this camera?
I am at a crossroads, to be honest. I really like the idea of this point and shoot capabilities (I have the S5 IS). I like the zoom on this camera, and many other features as well.
I must admit, I am somewhat torn. I want this to be a camera I will use for many more years to come. I am not very experienced as a photographer, but love to take pictures of my family, kids and outdoor type things. A few people say I don't do half bad in my picture taking.
I can get this camera, or I have the option of purchasing my father in law's absolutely mint Rebel (not sure which model though. I think it is the XT), at a great price, (since I am related). Then, for my Mother's Day, and every other gift giving holiday in the year, I can add one or two lenses to it. I am unsure which lenses I would get, would like, or can afford. My biggest thing is zoom. I like it, because you can take pictures of animals and kids from far away, and they don't know you are there, so the photo comes out looking more natural.
Can anyone help me with this dilemma?
Blessings,
Carol

CarolI'm posting my thoughts and experiences here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=672904) as I come to them. I sold my SX10 to my sister in order to get this. I have an SX1 that I think is going to make it onto eBay fairly soon.
Perhaps surprisingly, it's not its low-light performance that irks me. That's better than I expected.
It's the purple fringing that gets me. Anywhere you have a bright/dark transition, there's purple fringing. And for a summer holiday camera, that's particularly irritating.
Maybe the dSLR has spoiled me too much... :-(

I got mine from NewEgg, yesterday. A quick review:
It's *small* and light. Larger than those darn tiny, square P&S's, but too small for me to get a good grip on. The shutter button is not in the perfect place for me.
It's surprisingly quick in all actions, including AF. Better than my G9. Much, MUCH slower AF than my 1Ds! :)
I've got great 13" x 19" full-bleed prints from my G9, and the lens on the SX1 seems more contrasty in the center than the G9. The extreme corners have a lot of CA, about double the G9's lens. ACR removes all of the G9's, so I look forward to Adobe updating DNG so my old version of CS2/ACR will work with the SX1. At that point, I'll not miss the G9 at all. (For the record, the G9 compares favorably with the 1Ds, 24-70 & 70-200 2.8 IS! Not AS good, but shockingly close for 1/28 the price!)
The SX1's IS is very good. Even shooting/filming at 80x (560 * 4x digi-zoom - 2240mm) works acceptably.
Just like EVERYONE else, I complain about the rear spin-ring. Mine seems to have a dead spot, and choosing a SCN scene mode is very awkward. Must spin fast enough, or the SCN mode cancels!
The EVF is actually useable. Much better than the tiny, distorted optical VF in the G9. Remember to adjust diopter!!!
Battery life for me - playing alot with settings and LCD on, is short. A couple hours. New NiMH batts may grow into extended life when broken in?
HD movies are great, as is the sound. This, and 28mm, are the reasons for the G9 to go away. The usable 560mm is also nice. In bad, bright/contrasty lighting, that CA is sometimes visible. The 'jello' effect is visible, if you act like a movie-mogul-noob and spin like a dervish. Keep the pan speed artistically reasonable, and there's no jello.
I like it!

It's like most delicate tools and precision instruments - you need to learn to use it properly. Outside experience with other gear helps, but there's no substitute for hands-on with the real thing. The 24-70 f/2.8 L lens is another item that falls into this category. It seems intuitive that it should be no different to use than any other lens, but the weight and heft contribute to making it just that little bit different. "There must be some good bagpipes around, but a lot of bad ones as well . . . " :{)#

No idea regarding bagpipes as I'm a Yorkshireman but they all sound terrible to me:lol:
I know what your saying about learning how to use them properly but as the SX1is is basically an advanced point and shoot I did expect it to do just that and my version didn't. I have just bought a MP-E 65mm Macro and I find it easy to use but some people have complained saying its useless but i love it.
I bought the SX1is because i needed and quick point and shoot and the Canon seemed like the ideal one for the job and after seeing some very nice shots on the forum etc bought one but like i said all i wanted to do was switch on and get a quick shot in my garden something which my old compacts could do and also my old fuji bridge cameras. I did try many shots but personally i thought the quality was rubbish hence reason for sending it back and also reason i think mine was a duff one. There are any SX1is users who love them and good on them but also quite a few like myself who don't and like i said maybe there are some duff ones around? Its not down to not being experienced enough to use one correctly. My mate who's a Pro togger for 35 years said the same as me and he know how to handle any camera (he also collects and restores vintage cameras) he works for National Trust in UK.
I'm not trying to knock anyone's choice of camera Jon and if I have offended anyone sorry for that I'm just explaining the problems i had with my SX1is.
Cheers
