Motion detection technology, 10 mp, iso range 3200 (usable probably to 400), and icontrast.
nice.
if canon integrates more features that are arising out of CHDK, they will sweep the market for high quality P&S.

these have been available and shipping from amazon for the past week. i placed an order today for a dark gray version for $216 including shipping... i'll post some test pics once it gets here.
10MP and compact size with f2.8 and a manual mode is what does it for me. hopefully it's better than the sd1100 which seemed to have some problems. the key with these compacts seems to be getting the WB set, being careful with the AF, and keeping that flash off.. at least that was the case with my old SD10.

anyone know about iso performance on this camera? iso 3200 can't be very good, can it?
i've been thinking about the panasonic lx3 but this camera looks good too. f2.8 is not bad at all...

Well, I have the SD1100IS and it's fantastic. So, I'll bet the 1200 is awesome. Love the color choices. My 1100 is in brown and got lots of compliments. This time I'll probably pick dark gray. But it'll be awhile.

I purchased my daughter her favorite color, an orange one from her two year old son for Mothers Day and now have to buy my wife a green one . Better than pink I guess ;)

The pink one is fun! I bet you can find that one easily if you ever lose it. I still have my SD1000.. IS isn't that necessary.

Oh, drat you all. My much loved SD1100 got damaged and I need a new compact. But my credit card is full, so no purchases anytime soon.
I tell you, I feel stark naked without a camera in my purse. I carried that camera everywhere and took hundreds of pictures with it.:cry::cry:

How is the IQ? Can someone post some sample photos. I'm thinking of buying one as a gift for my girlfriend. She's gaining an interest in photography and right now I think she has a 6MP Casio.

If she's showing an interest in photography, the SD990 or the A590 might be better choices. Both have modes that give the photographer more control over camera settings than the SD1200 has; they still have the same "full automation" of the SD1200, but they'll also let you select shutter speed and aperture when you want to. And if she wants to learn, the extra control will be a real bonus.

Thanks for the response Jon, I hadn't thought of getting her one with manual mode but that's an excellent point. I would like to stick with the SD series as she has expressed a preference for smaller cameras. I also don't want to overwhelm her right off the bat, as she seems to enjoy taking photos with her Casio. What do you think about the SD 890IS? She has a good eye and if her interest grows I would like to get her a Rebel down the road, but first things first.

AFAIK the SD990 is the only SD model, and the A590 is the only A-series, to offer anything other than full automation or full automation with ISO control. The weight difference between the A590 and the SD890 is less than an ounce; the A590's not a lot bigger overall than the SD890 either; it's just the lens barrel that makes it somewhat deeper. But if you set them in "Green Box", they'll all function the same.

Why doesn't the SD1200IS have the my camera tab on the menu like the other powershots? I haven't hooked it up to the computer, but do you only get this once it's hooked up?

I just got this camera yesterday, I have taken about 400 shots with and and love it! I find that I can get the ISO up to 1600. How is it moved up to 3200?

My wife got one of these a week ago. Haven't done any real testing, but have seen some nice shots from it, mostly from "P" mode and low ISO. But then I guess they all take nice shots with that setting. Still, I think it's probably a good camera. I think being "blue" probably ups the IQ a bit! ;)

I'm really impressed with the SD990. Great little pocket camera.
