SD780 IS (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=18183). Optical finder, 12.1 MP 1/2.3 sensor, 3x zoom (33-100 mm efl).

SD960 IS (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=18289)12.1 MP 1/2.3 sensor 4x zoom (28-112 mm efl).

SD970 IS (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=18335) 12.1 MP 1/2.3 sensor, 5x zoom (37-185 mm efl).
All are using the same 1/2.3" sensor the two new A-series are using as well. Looks like Canon's going to consolidate their sensor sizes a bit; maybe this means the pimegaxel wars are coming to an end.

This thread is more than a month old and no one has posted ???

I'm seriously considering the SD780 IS. The reviews on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD780IS-Stabilized-Silver/dp/B001SER47O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1239208882&sr=1-3 ) seem pretty good. If its HD video is good enough we'd probably sell our HD camcorder (I'm sure the 780 won't be as good but good enough).

So, does anyone have this? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
dan

Do any of these HD cameras have manual modes?

Thanks,
dan

Nope. The only SD to have any direct control over shutter speed or aperture is the SD990. For now, it's that or one of the SX series (or an older high-end A-series).

That's too bad. I really want that HD video and credit card size so I'm going with the 780. The 960 looks good, but I wonder why they get rid of the optical viewfinder.

Thanks,
dan

Size, and how many people have you ever seen (aside from me) using an optical viewfinder on the digital cameras with them? Plus making a zooming optical finder adds cost, size and weight which people avoid in "pocket" cameras.

I guess I'm old school too because I used the viewfinder on my old SX10 unless I was shooting over the heads of folks in front of me. Or, if I was shooting from way down low (avoiding bending over ;) ).

Well I picked up the 780 tonight :)

Thanks,
dan

Congrats, that looks like a nice camera. I probably would have bought it if it came with an optical viewfinder.

My beautiful and much loved SD1100IS camera got damaged. I really couldn't afford to replace it but after two weeks of feeling like I'd go nuts without a compact camera with me, I went into Best Buy...

OMG! They had the 1200 in dark gray (my favorite color!) and the 780 in black (also a favorite) . I just couldn't stand it. I sighed, took out my credit card and bought the 780. It has the HD video, so imo, it's a bit more sophisticated than the 1200.

My local BB had gone weeks with pitiful stock so to have both in was amazing. I figured it was karma.

I feel nervous that my poor credit card is strained to the limit but good grief! What's a photographer to do?????

Can't wait to take pix!

That black is sharp, I almost bought it myself but I was worried about it heating up in the sunlight. Either way you go, it's still a great choice.

I haven't posted pictures yet, but so far, it's doing well. One question: does anyone else experience jerky videos? I'm playing them back on Photoshop Elements and they look jerky. Bleah.

Could be your computer or the codec being used aren't up to the task.

Hmm. I am trying to get them uploaded to Flickr to examine them there, because I didn't have this problem with the old SD1100. I'll keep trying and let you know.

Just ordered the 970. My daughter's bday is Friday. I'll have it just in time.

Nothing like last minute shopping.

Congrats on the 970, I stopped waiting till the last minute as it increased the likelihood that something will go wrong ;)

Hey rainyday,
Did the upload play correctly?

Any SD780 users out there happy with the performance of this camera?

I'm at the point of giving up on all pocket sized cameras. This is the 3rd camera (Samsung & Panasonic were the first two) I purchased since Mothers Day, and they ALL take terrible pics. My old 4MP OlyUZ takes better pics than any of these 12MP [alleged]IS cameras.......I'll be posting a link to pics shortly. At first, I thought we must be doing something wrong but there's no way, we've been trying in full auto as well as some of the program modes and if you get a keeper out of 20 shots it'd be alot.

Very disappointed, will be taking this back shortly unless someone can show me what Im doing wrong.

Here's a link to some photo's, I dont know what to think about this p&s.....Ive read ppl rave about it but Im not seeing it>>> http://fortisi.zenfolio.com/p899605102/h18b36413#h18b36413

I'm loving the SD780. It's called the Ixus 100 in the UK.
I had a look and feel in the local store today and my first impression was it was too small and was almost 'toy like'. And cute in a girly way.
Then I saw the Nikon Coolpix S620 and was torn.....
So I left the store without buying anything....

Now I'm hankering towards the Canon again.
Any owners of the Ixus 100 care to share their views???????

I checked a few of your photos and I'm not going to be much help, but I did notice that #3 it looks like your shutter speed was too slow because you're daughter's head seems to be double.

I don't expect to get incredible shots out of the 780. It's a good camera, but it's a P&S. The photos it takes are good, but not great.

Thnx for taking the time to look at the pics and to reply Dan. I think Im spoiled with the 1D but the thing that baffles my wife and I is the fact that our old Oly UZ camera (4MP) still takes great pics in the same conditions. We just experimented today by leaving it in program mode, the pics seem better but still disappointing. Im about 90% positive it's going back.......might have to give that G10 a look.

I ended up getting the Ixus 100 eventually.
The colours are very rich and vibrant, and you can process your pics after you've taken them to an extent.

My only concern is that there is no AEB facility:(

Make sure your computer is set to optimum performance levels. I had mine on 'battery saver' and it was jerky as hell.

I just bought the sd780 for a two day amusement park trip. It's pretty small and takes decent pictures and video too. It's weird not having a M mode though.

Taking the 50D wasn't really an option. :)

I was (am?) in the same boat as you. I've had the SD780 for about a month now (coming from an SD600). The quality of the pictures have been lacking compared to the SD600. In the month i've spent trying to figure out what's wrong and looking around forums for answers, i've come to the conclusion that the main problem I have with this camera is it's auto focus. Most of my pics seem to be bad because the camera chose a different focus point that what i wanted, therefore leaving the pics as "soft". The SD600 did much better in this regards.

To fix this, i set my focus options to be Center and turned on the AF assist beam. So far my pics have been turning out A LOT better.

Bottom line, with this camera I have to pay a lot more attention in the setup of the options than i did with the older point and shoot. With the SD600 i would just leave it in Auto mode. No way i can do that with the SD780.

If HD video wasn't such a big deal for me, i would have opted for one of the older Canon point and shoots.

i just bought the sd780 camera because of the HD video...

i had a canon sd1000 for still pictures

and a Flip Mino HD camcorder for HD videos

and i just sold them both today to get the sd780

i recently became obsessed with good quality video so i researched the internet and decided on the Flip Mino HD and i was really happy to see that the quality from the flip was just likr the sd780

here is a video that i took with my new sd780 , make sure to press the HD button in the lower corner once it starts to play

I wish I could get the specs of the 960 in the body of the 970. What's up with the weird design of the 960? Two buttons and a strangely-sized LCD? I'm looking around for an 880 but it looks like it's out of stock everywhere.

interesting. I thought the image stabilization was supposed to steady the picture while taking video as well. the picture is not bad but its a jerky as the Flip HD that I just returned (because it was jerky).
