If you look in the menu for the Members List, it shows everybody and their location, if any is mentioned. Many are from the USA and Canada, some from Great Britain and the rest of Europe. Some from the Far East. Some from Australia and New Zealand. Relatively few from Africa or South America or Central Asia. Nobody from the South Pole.

Not way off base ... but Camp Butler (1st MAW HQ).

Here's a bit of trivia for you. OK, I've heard of Camp Butler from my days in Okinawa but I couldn't recall where the camp was actually located. So, I did a google search and learned that Camp Butler is not one camp but a collection of camps. The following site lists the satellite camps making up Camp Butler:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/camp-butler.htm

And 1st MAW is (was?) in Futenma. I used to attend a private American school located just outside one of the gates of this base going out into Maehara. Used to love watching the F-4 Phantoms taking off and landing there. :)

[Edit] I just had a flashback moment (while I was washing the dishes :) ) and it occurred to me that we did call the Marine base in Futenma Camp Butler. I guess long term memories really are forever. It's just that sometimes, they get buried deep inside the brain and takes a while to get to. :D

Well now ... that link has certainly confused my memory. I had no idea that Camp Butler was technically more than one location ... I never had any trouble finding the right one when I was there (unless I had a little too much soju) :)

1st MAW headquarters was on Butler ... at least when I was there (1990-91). MCAS Futenma was one of the bases under its command ... MCAS Iwakuni (mainland) was another. I was attached to MWHS-1 (Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1) ... worked in the Wing G-3 (Operations) initially, until a reenlistment and lateral move into Counter-Intel.

They (unfortunately) no longer had Phantoms when I was in, but I certainly enjoyed watching the F/A-18's and Harriers (cool!). I spent much of my time in N.C. in helicopter squadrons ... and flew often in hueys, frogs (CH-46) and CH-53 Super Stallions. Much fun! Served as a huey door gunner for awhile ... survived it somehow :? Never got to ride in a Cobra, however

Was your father in the military (or other government service)?

He was a DoD civilian employee working mostly in Fort Buckner (US Army) as a computer programmer and systems analyst.

With all the exposure you've had to planes, helicopters, etc., have you developed an interest in photographing them? If I had my way, I'd be attending every air show I can get to.

I have developed an interest ... yes ... but I haven't really explored it yet. Your question reminds me that (somewhere) I have some photos of Harriers operating off of a carrier (LHA type ... mainly for helicopters). They did short (very) runway takeoffs and vertical landings. I need to find those photos. I had a P&S 35mm at the time so I'm sure they're not high quality, but I'd like to see them again.

The local AF Base is having an airshow late spring/early summer ... the Blue Angels will be there. Haven't seen them in many years ... I think they still had A-4's. I guess that's the perfect opportunity to explore the interest!

Well, you certainly have the right equipment for the air show if you do decide to go.

And if you do find that picture of the Harrier, how about posting it so we can have a look at it. That Harrier is one unique plane. There's no other plane like it with the same STO/VTOL capabilities. :)

Keep your eyes on the F-35B - it is the replacement for the Harrier.

http://www.thaitechnics.com/aircraft/f35.html

It uses a very interesting shaft-driven fan in the center of the fuselage, along with a downward-pointing exhaust nozzle from the engine, and a couple other goodies to achieve the STOVL capability.

Have Fun,

Thanks for the link, Rick. Now that you've mentioned it, I remember seeing a documentary clip of the F-35 on either the Discovery Channel or the History Channel (can't recall the show it was on). That's one awesome plane, too.
