Seems like the Northern lights have picked up now :)
There where some great displays tonite.
I tried out a little bit and this is taken at f/5.6 so that I could get some depth on the bushes. ISO 1600 and 15s

Well, just jump on a plane to get away from the heat in Australia
And I promise you the only fire you will see will fly over the sky
(if the weather is good)

Beautifully done. I've never seen an aurora but really, really want to one day.

Im getting ready to try shooting some stars. Do you typically use daylight for white balance?
Here is my setup canon 40d. 28-200 f4.5-5.6 usm no IS. 18-55 f3.5-5.6 no IS.
I will have in the next 2 weeks: sigma 24-60 f2.8ex dg and a canon 28-135 f3.5-56. with IS
What will be my optimal setup to photo (lense, settings, etc) the stars? Im have only tried once and did not get really good results.

I am not the correct person to ask for setup for shooting stars.
I always use my EF-S 10-22mm so it's wide.
I use Fluorecent or lately Tungsten for white balance. Gives me a bluer sky.
Re-post this under a new tread and you will get a much better answer :)
