I recently purchased a new Canon 1000D. This is my first of several attempt at getting in to the manual settings. Let me know what you all think. Criticism is welcome.
Canon 1000D
EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
3.2Sec
F5.6
Partial metering
ISO 400
White Balance - Auto
I shot the original image Raw. Sharpened it up a bit, reduced it, and converted to .jpeg. That was about it, other than a crop at the top and bottom

Well done on the camera and the post!
Nice shot. Love helicopters!!! :D
The only C&C I'll give you is that as it stands, you could have improved the shot by sitting on your arse! The height (camera above ground) looks very "standard".
So next time, please play with camera angles, wider lenses, spooky crops - you name it!
But again...really well done!

Sky, Thanks for the tip. At the time I couldn't get any lower from that angle due to a waist high fence and hedge right in front of me. But I will definetly try playing with the angle a bit more on future shots. But can you define a "spooky" crop?
Thanks

(The emboldened part:) That's a shame as I think the curve of the underbelly would have really distorted well.
Was the fence chain-link or solid? If the former, you could put the lens as close as possible, and with a big aperture, completely through it out of focus.
If solid, you're stuck!
As to "spooky" crops, I mean where the fuselage becomes more sureal, so the focus is on the shapes, rivets, lines, etc., and not so much on the whole.
I really like composite posters where the aircraft is central and parts of it, creatively photographed are all around....but maybe that's just me.

I would definately approach whoever is the operator of this helo, show them this photo and see if they'd let you inside the fence for a proper shoot. I think they'd jump at that offer.
With the understanding of course that all bets are off the second they have to go to work.

Quite a nice job blocking the street lamp with the rotor hub. Great colors.

I am going to try and talk with someone this weekend to see if I can get over the fence.
