Can you use this lens for portraits?
A little easier to do so when shooting on a crop body, but if you don't mind doing wide-angle environmental portraits (lots of background), then yes, you can.

Yeah, backgrounds are unavoidable with portraits....but that can also be a good thing. Just depends on how you want to convey your photo to others.

Same can be done regarding portraits. Just depends on how you would like to envisage something...

Okay, that's enough. I can't take it anymore!!!!! I've just bought this lens. I was hanging out for an IS, but it came along at a nice price, so I couldn't let it slip through my hands. Watch this space, I can't wait to put it through its paces. Curious to see if the IS is optically advanced on this version. No choice now, paid for it immediately, now I'm just waiting for the Postie to drop it off Wednesday or Thursday. I can't wait.

Agreed, there's no way they would update this lens again so soon. It's their masterpiece right now with the SWC coating, first lens to have it in the Canon Lineup.
They have a bunch of other lenses to update before this one. Even if/when it does happen I somehow doubt IS will be an addition. It's just not worth it for wide angle. I still don't use IS lenses personally.

Yes, this lens is amazing. I have had a lot of good ones (135L etc.) but 24LII is the best of them. I really love my 35L, but I think that if 35II is as good as the new 24mm I'll have to upgrade.

I found a good deal locally on this lens and went for it. Driving home I was so excited to take some pics with my first L lens and post them here. Maybe I was expecting to much but I wasn't blown away. Compared to my Sigma 30, it is hard to tell them apart all the time. I quickly set up a test to put them side by side. These are around 100% crops. The tops are @1.4 and the bottoms are @5.6. Live view focused on tripod.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1415/5107721651_029815f438_b.jpg
Maybe I have an incredible copy of the Sigma or a so-so copy of the 24 or both. I was just anticipating I would open up my files on the computer and have my jaw drop. I am tempted to just sell it, it is hard to justify the $1000+ difference. Though when it nails it it is impressive.
@2.0
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1375/5107721757_b64b09f873_b.jpg
And this is like a 125% crop. @2.2
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1411/5107742003_b1a8f12c4c_b.jpg
I think at 1.4 there is a little front focus and it is a little inconsistent. I am tempted to send it in but if it isn't a good copy (based on bear comparison) it seems like it might not help a ton.
I don't know. It's just the lens was so much and I was so excited about my first L. Maybe I just need to learn it and possibly send it in. What do you think?

Thanks. yes the light was yellow. I reduced the saturation a bit because it's a bit too much for me. Also, it looks like when you use tripod first time (well may be 2nd as I tested with quick shots 3-4 days ago at home) it's not easy particularly if people are moving nearby. I need to learn.

Yeah I did. It is hard to tell when it is okay. What I do is set my camera on a tripod and aim at a perpendicular test chart around 4-5 feet. I live view focus and look on distance scale where it is at. Then I AF and adjust it until it hits the same mark from the live view focus.
I think I just have to get used to the ultra thin dof a bit. I never shot my Sigma @1.4. I guess I am more concerned right now with IQ between the two.

Imho, I bet the 24 1.4 is much better in IQ over your Sigma. If you look at Julian's shots above, he does well with it. If you're having issues with focusing, then you should send it back and get another copy.

That's because I don't pixel-peep. :lol::lol::lol:
The 24Lii is super-retarded-sharp at f/1.4 w/ "good lighting" (which means if indoors, then get a flash). So the potential for sharpness is there. However, it will suffer the same fate as all other lenses if/when using indoor ambient/low-light. If one is going to shoot a ambient/low-ish light situation... then one needs to accept the compromises.
I can't comment on how it compares w/ the Siggy 30/1.4. I just know that the Siggy is highly regarded. That said, I got the 24 because I wanted wider (without having to buy FF body), so the 24mm won out by default as the Siggy can't even do 29mm. ;)
So it's up to you, kylyo, whether or not you feel the 24 is worth the price of admission for me. To me, there was absolutely no doubt about it. YMMV.

BTW, this was shot through a double glazed compartment window - the train was fully occupied, and I found myself standing near the doors. Quite amazing indeed, I was totally amazed myself by what I saw happening.
I did crop this image slightly, by about 4-5% to get rid of the window frame, upped contrast a bit to alleviate the contrast loss due to shooting through window panes, corrected exposure and curves so it was still possible to see something through the side windows, and upped saturation a bit in order to convey that feeling of warmth, cosiness and security, in order to try and bring across the emotions I felt at the time.
Anyway, glad you like it all!

Yeah I hear you. The things I really like about it is that it is wider, the short MFD is AWESOME, and the feel of it is incredible. I did test it with my B800 (at 5.6) and it was stupid sharp. I'll have to try some at 1.4. I think you have a good point about the ambient light!

We got a ticket once when we decided to visit Maastricht (I was in Juelich, Germany for an experiment). In the city center, there was a lonely parking slot of course nobody had taken and there was no "no parking" sign that we could see. So, we parked there and of course received the ticket later at home. Town is really beautiful and we really enjoyed and we had lot of fun. Food was really nice and walking in the town was fantastic.

I've rented the 35L and 85L this past summer. Just placed my loaner order with CPS on the this 24L and 50L and 135L to see what I think...judging from the photos here the 24L might just be a next order.

I don't know. It's just the lens was so much and I was so excited about my first L. Maybe I just need to learn it and possibly send it in. What do you think?
I think you answered your own question here.
Besides those shots were taking indoor in poor lighting. If you are into shooting outdoor I believe the 24L II is much better than the Sigma with less CA, better handling flare, weather sealing, better colors etc. There is so much more to a lens than just sharpness .

Caught my cat doing something silly just a little while ago. I love this lens. Couldn't have captured these as well with any other lens, certainly not a situation for flash.

this IS the 24L II thread right? ;)
yeah, I had to double check too! I had a 24L on my 7D when I got it. It didn't AF quick. I wasn't sure if it was that specific lens or the 24L in general, but I found a good deal on a 24II and sold my 24L for a quick profit sweetening the deal... So I'm happy now, but I'd prefer the original if I could have one that AFed this fast, but yeah the II version IS very nice. :)

Julian I hope this doesn't come off rash, but I get updates to the thread so often that are pictures of your son over and over. I understand you are proud of your son for sure, but this is a thread demonstrating the abilities of the lens and I just feel the bump with these pictures is a little off-topic of what the thread is about. Not trying to be mean, but if you could post other examples perhaps outside of the house or of your son that'd be awesome!

Well, it may not hurt anyone but my posting seems to have rubbed the wrong way with someone. My intent isn't to ruin other people's enjoyment of any part of POTN. So if my photo(s) have become a nuisance, then I'll just pack it up online. :)

Well, it may not hurt anyone but my posting seems to have rubbed the wrong way with someone. My intent isn't to ruin other people's enjoyment of any part of POTN. So if my photo(s) have become a nuisance, then I'll just pack it up online. :)
Well, you certainly not ruining anything here. I demand you not pack it up! :) This is a forum for photography and sharing photos. You better keep posting or else! :)

 Guess in that case, I'll keep a running tally on the votes as they come in. It currently stands @ 1 v 1 (yay vs. nay). I'll adjust my posting habits accordingly. ;)

A gorgeous shot....only to be outdone by an even more glorious 45mm. Ed Brown makes some SWEET handguns!!! :) :)

Fair enough. You're likely echoing the sentiments of the silent majority on the matter. I'll stop posting photos of my son or any other objects that are taken indoors in this thread.
Julian, please don't stop. Not only is it fun to watch, but it certainly demonstrates the possibilities of the 24L II amply - WA, fast, good bokeh, no flash needed indoors, etc.
Kind regards, Wim

Julian I hope this doesn't come off rash, but I get updates to the thread so often that are pictures of your son over and over. I understand you are proud of your son for sure, but this is a thread demonstrating the abilities of the lens and I just feel the bump with these pictures is a little off-topic of what the thread is about. Not trying to be mean, but if you could post other examples perhaps outside of the house or of your son that'd be awesome!
Since when are you the person to determine what someone can and can't post?
I'm sorry, but that is the job of the moderators. If you don't like what you see, just unsubscribe.
Julian's pictures do show the possibilities of this lens amply, both inside and outside the house. Other than that, there are plenty of other people's photographs here too.
Kind regards, Wim

Please do continue as you were....
Nobody but the moderators can tell you what to post or not. And your pictures amply demonstrate the possibilities of this lens. I am always looking forward to your latest pics, so keep on posting!
Kind regards, Wim
