Somewhat I found 17-40 dose better flare control than 24L II, am I right or not?

24LII is an awesome lens, but I don't use mine much. :( I much prefer 35mm focal length and find the 24 to be too heavy to bring "just in case I need a wider lens". The only time I use it is when we travel somewhere by car, so I'm thinking that I should sell it, but it's hard to get rid of what is probably my best lens...

Solution!

Buy an APS-C camera so then the 24 becomes a 38 and then it'll no longer be too wide. j/k

If it's hardly used, that's a lot of money locked up for a paperweight.

Funny but I got one and I find I do like it more on the 60D but its so close to my 50L that I may sell mine too. Amazing lens but I don't know if its worth it for me to keep it.

I do think having a fast wide option is cool but I have a 24-70 and I mostly shoot for fun so I don't know if its a lens worth keeping for me.

Has anyone noticed that this lens has more trouble than other lenses locking on to shiny objects and or smaller areas of low contrast? Through all my testing I have found a few objects that this lens still doesn't like to lock on to(believe it or not AI Servo AF sometimes improves this and locks on correctly). I just find it weird that often times the less sensitive points on my camera(not the center) will lock on to these misses correctly. My 17-55mm has no problem with them either. So far most things seem to be ok, but I definitely have to be more conscious to give the lens lots of contrast otherwise it will miss and miss badly. Again, so far not bad enough that I'm real upset at the lens, just enough to give some doubt in its AF ability.

Mine took +18 or so until three visits to Canon. Now its at -1. As I mentioned earlier its AF performance is still not as fast as my 17-55mm nor as accurate with trickier subjects especially in low light but its pretty good.

Yeah its odd...90% of time it does just fine. Seems like shiny/reflective subjects in low light can cause some issue. Especially with small details of low contrast.

I think its possibly 7D specific because the center point has more trouble with these subjects than others for certain subjects. Then again, I'm comparing it to the best AF-ing lens I've ever used (17-55mm)

But like I said 90% of the time in low light and only for theoretical subjects is good enough for me I guess. It was much worse before going to Canon the last time. When I'm purposely looking around my apartment for low contrast subjects with small details I probably am overdoing it.

It all stems from when originally the center point reacted completely different than the outer points. Outer points needed +10MA, center +20MA. Thankfully whoever worked on it at Canon last time did some black magic and its pretty darn good now.

^Seriously? Plus 18 for MA?

:( Yeah... and even now, I am not certain it's where it needs to be, as it keeps front focusing. I keep seeing peoples shots in here, such as TrebleKicker's here, that are sharp throughout the frame, yet I can't get this lens to perform anywhere near this level. Might have to send it in to Canon.

Try all the autofocus points. My center point was extremely unreliable but all the other points were quite good. The center required a different level of MA for some reason. Like I said, three trips to Canon and all is good now.

Also try it on nice and high contrast targets from different distances. I found the center point would sometimes work well on black/white large targets but not others.

Hmm.. I'll give the outer points a try, but if it works accurately w/ the outer points and not the center, it's going to require a trip to Canon no less.

I would send it out to Canon to have it checked out.

Well, it is a refurb unit from Canon, and I am in the 90 day warranty. is it worth it to calibrate or do I send in and exchange for another?

If you decide to send it in, just do it soon and stay on top of it. It might take a couple of trips to get right. I went through a couple of these with issues, so exchanging isn't always the best bet either. I had 2 adjusted and still had issues with them, but others have confirmed that Canon CAN fix the AF issues, but it might take multiple trips to Canon to do it.

I love skimming through the work you guys post on here. I love the 24LII for sure but I find it challenging as an every day lens..... Which is exactly why I like it. Last year I finally branched out of my "comfort zone" of lenses (28/35/50) and moved to a 24/50/135 setup. Boy what a change it has been. Really enjoyable though!

I haven't been posting a whole lot lately as I've been getting into film again over the past few months. I just bought an EOS 1N (should be here today) so I can't wait to try some film with my L primes! I will surely share the results with you guys as soon as I have some.

This will be the first pro EOS film camera I've had in 7 years. I've been shooting Canon FD stuff for a little while now and I do definitely love my T90 + 35 f/2 but I'm itching to try all my L lenses on film haha.

Anyways, keep up the awesome work guys, you're all very inspirational to me :)

I agree and I love the selective focus in your shot. Since popping the super precision matte focusing screen in my camera, I've noticed it's even easier to use the shallow DOF of this lens.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the shot.

I use the super precision focusing screen as well but as far as focusing goes I think it truly helps only when you're close to MFD. It has another advantage though that you're able to see real DOF with the DOF preview button. Very useful at times.

As for the lens, I have had my copy (the one chosen out of seven copies) adjusted twice. After the first attempt, it was horrible (far worse than before), after the second I had to settle at +4 MA but it seems to be noticeably more consistent since then. Still can get a bit random at mid-to-long ranges though (or with some specific target/condition it simply "doesn't like") but I find the "focus jitter" smaller and after loosening the sharpness requirements a little bit, the number of unusable frames has decreased. I'll post some examples next time I run into something typical...

Nevertheless, in spite of all these complaints, this lens has stayed on my body for most of the time since I bought it. I wish I could write something smarter than this but honestly it's just soooo fun to use. The angles, the DOF... and it forces you to get close... :)

subscribed to this recently... and wow. I am just loving the feel of the images that all of you seem to be getting from this lens. The colour rendition is phenomenal.

This might be a lens in my future I think to pair up the 50 and 85.
