I think I have been spoiled by my 135mm F2L which consistently gives me 90%+ keep rate. I have always felt that without the IS and with a long focal length on a crop body (7D), the 135mm is a harder lens to use but I managed to keep a good portion of the photos I took.

Now that I have had a chance to play with my 24mm F1.4 for 2 months, I find that nailing focus with this one is not as easy as my 135mm. When it focuses correctly, the photos are just beautiful. When it misses, it's very disappointing! I'm trying to understand why focus is missed and 1 area I'm looking at right now is my lens is focusing somewhere else while using F1.4 at AI Focus mode when I was photographing a red-colored strawberry flower in day light in windy condition. Has anyone been successful in using AI Focus, spot AF at F1.4 with this lens?

I have also tried using this lens during a dimly lit band concert with mixed results. I would like to see some examples if you care to share.

Have you tried not using AI focus and shooting w/ just 1-shot? AI focus is an attempt at blending the two (1-shot & ai servo), but it also means it's always thinking that something *might* move and can therefore cause AF to be a bit jittery.

I say give 1-shot a try and see if the rates improve/deteriorate.

I said I would post something typical for this lens AF wise. Nothing special but here's the entire frame:

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/9199/img000422.jpg

f/1.4, focused with the center point where the bricks meet the tower's top. Plenty of contrast, should have been a piece of cake for the AF sensor... Now for the crops:

1. The good one from the above full image

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4894/img00042v.jpg

2. A few seconds earlier, same settings and the same frame...

http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/6091/img00032a.jpg

All of the eight 24LII I have tried have behaved this way, most of them were actually worse. If you can justify why it would miss in such situation I'll appreciate it but seriously I can't see how it could be a challenge for the AF system.

Is it the body to blame? Maybe. I've got four lenses: three L primes + 85 1.8 which is widely regarded as a great AF performer anyway and perhaps the only one I could never complain about is 200 2.8L. It seems that the wider the angle, the more random AF can get. Saying that, the misfocus ratio with 35L does not spoil the fun. The 24LII can get really annoying at times. And I have tried my copy on another brand new 5DII that seemed to like it even less. This kind of ruled out the broken body route for me but maybe I should try one more to confirm...

Hello Julian!

I have tried using one shot at 1.4. Results are inconsistent at times. I might try a burst later to see if this persists.

I have heard plenty of criticism of the AI Focus setting. A week ago decided to try that during the day while at the park with the kids playing Frisbee. It performed acceptably using smaller apertures.

Reading through this whole thread takes some time but I'm glad I did, as I've learned more about some of the challenges of using a wide angle lens. Many photos here are just beautiful!

So since I'm on summer vacation with nothing to do, I just finished looking through this thread off and on starting last week from page 1(all the way to here at the end, and no skipping pages)...I also have about 30 more pages to go with the 16-35L thread.

Then I'm going to look through the 35L thread.

So far I like the images coming from the 24L thread more, but that may just be because it seems like 80%+ of the 16-35L images are landscapes and I'm going to be mostly using this for photojournalism- low light events, environmental portraiture and I see more of that here than there. The images here from wedding photographers and such really show this lens off. I'm still not sure how distortion compares, and I'm still stuck on whether or not it's better to have the variety of different perspectives you get from a zoom. I may just end up renting them both, or perhaps getting the 35L and 17-40L...(which together ends up being about as much as this lens).

Anyway, enough talking, more pictures! :)

I've been using this lens for almost 2 months now. I found it that this lens is great for landscape and night shooting. However I found out its hard to do portrait shooting during low light condition. Most of the time the face turn out blurry or out of focus. Does any of you has similar experience with this lens? Would speedlite help improving the focussing problem of this lens in low light?

I don't have focusing problems in low light with the 24L II. However, because of the AoV, the AF system has more problems with AF and WAs, and in low light it also is more difficult anyway. Just make sure you use a focusing point with enough contrast differences, and reframe - all should be well in that case.

As to blurriness: you really need to time your shots with longer exposures. You'd normally need at least 1/50s on FF with 24L to get people sharp enough (provided they don't move too fast), but you can get away with slower shutter speeds if you indeed can handhold those properly and pick the moments of stillness.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Thanks wim,
I tried to focus on the face on dim light condition and it prob explain why it cant focus properly. I have no problem taking portrait during the day though. However, I do find my quality of portrait from 24 ii is not as sharp as 85 1.2 or 70-200 mm 2.8 ii. do you have similar problem? or may be my lens has focusing problem?

the portrait in 24 1.4 ii looks sharp in original frame but when i crop the image to see the face, its not as sharp as 70-200 or 85 1.2. Do u find this normal for wide angle lens?

I would love a Supra replacement as the MKIV has given me 10+ years of enjoyment. I just hope they don't mess it up considering the direction Toyota has gone over the years. Also, a replacement will stop me buying a GTR in a year or two. :)

To Frames By Celly,

You have some pretty sharp shots there at the birthday party. Which AF did you use on the first one? Is it Spot AF or Single point AF? or some other settings?

bobjob
3rd of June 2011 (Fri), 07:34
I was thinking of selling this lens on the weekend due to its inconsistent af. I thought i bought a lemon copy. Anyway I played around with it and did some lens calibration trick and what a surprise, the lens start to perform up to its expectation. I love the bokeh and the sharpness of my pics now. No more blurred and unpredictable pics that I used to get. I think my copy prob as sharp as my 70-200 mm ii or may be sharper

kwyml12106
3rd of June 2011 (Fri), 08:10
To Bobjob,

How do you calibrate? did you do MA? I have heard that spot AF is for macro only, using it on non-macro shots may result in misfocus, don't know if that's true...I agree that when the 24mm takes sharp pictures, they are really sharp..

bobjob
3rd of June 2011 (Fri), 18:09
I took several pics of a chart with the same settings of aperture, shutter speed and iso in manual mode with tripod and go to camera setting where you can adjust the af focus of lens accordingly i.e plus or minus to pick the best clarity for this setting. Pick another aperture and start all over again for this distance.

repeat the whole process at different distance now.

I ended up getting the same adjustment value regardless of the distance. if there is some minor variability then pick the best adjustment value overall for diferrent distance. It took me more than 1-2 hours for one lens. I did the same with my 85 1.2 mm ii and they are all very sharp now.

I hope this will help

bobjob
3rd of June 2011 (Fri), 18:12
after i calibrated it i havent noticed any misfocus at all at any distance. The af in my camera seems to function better

Nice Julian! How do you like the x100? I'm very close to getting one myself. All bad things aside, are the goods worth the price?

It's growing on me. I like the construction, feels rather solid/sturdy. It's got weight so it doesn't feel "cheap". It's only been a few days but I haven't really felt hampered by its shortcomings yet. At 35mm-equiv... it's not something that I would try to fire off anything with burst mode for action/sports.

The menu is rather clunky, nothing like Canon's menu system. Autofocus accuracy naturally starts to waiver in low-light (as expected). For all intent and purposes, it's a very expensive P&S. But at least the sensor gives you something nice to work with.

For IQ alone... I wouldn't say it's any better/worse than the Sony NEX. So with that, one has to question whether the extra premium one pays is "worth it" and that determination would be left to each individual buyer.

Not yet. Considering I haven't paid for it yet, it's hard to regret. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to carry this thing. I may need to break down and eBay some old-ish rangefinder case. Cuz I heard that Fuji wants some $140 clams for their x100 case.

Thanks bobjob, I find it really hard to get focus right at 1.4 with this lens. Have always used spot focus. Mine seems to focus on somewhere else at 1.4..maybe it's a slight movement on my part. I don't have any problem focusing at 1.4 with my 50mm lens. There are times when I feel that I don't want to risk missing focus with my 24mm, so I'd switch to my 50mm in the middle of a dimly lit school band performance. My results with the 50mm are consistently better..

Depends on what you mean by "weather sealed"!
The Rain, or the Lightnings?

Cool Shots, esp the first one!;)

I love this lens. Every time I want to comment, I see another gorgeous shot - you guys are putting up some gorgeous images, thanks coz it makes me take this one off the shelf!

Mine's probably only appealing to me but I couldn't resist my two Ridgebacks today

Perfect lens on the 7D, and razor sharp. This was supposed to be a "throw away" as I was just testing out the light a day before a wedding.
