AWESOME. So, 35 seconds at f9, ISO100. Did you have an ND filter?

Thank you - yeah, I was in Bulb... basically counting in my head, trying to keep each shot around 30 seconds or so, depending on how much lightning I got in that particular frame. If I got a big bolt at the beginning, I tried to let it go 20 or so seconds and then close it. If the frame was open for 30 seconds without any bolts, I'd close it and quickly re-open it so that if I did get a bolt, it wouldn't overexpose everything. I wasn't using any ND filters.

It takes a bit of finesse, patience and paying attention (counting). In the past, I've just set up 30 second shots and started mindlessly clicking away, but I was trying a bit of a new method with these. I think it worked.

Harm

^ interesting method, Todd.

I've done the manual mode, high-speed burst, MF focused at infinity, 30s shot, lock in a remote control, walk away, come back half an hour later, and you'll have a good number of lightening shots and more blanks.

I'm finally starting to force myself to use this lens. My normal workhorse lens is the 16-35, so I've been telling myself the 24 isn't wide enough. Bah! Just excuses... so, the last two outings I've shot with nothing but this lens and I'm really starting to dig it.

I know what you mean, Todd. I think the two lenses complement each other though. I do wish the 24L was wider, but the extra stops and sharper corners are so helpful for astrolandscape shots.

We just need Canon to make a 16mm f/1.4 lens.

You should try the Nikon 14-24. Using it wide open would be nice for your night photography and it's a ton better than the 16-35.

Here's a sample but, it's not wide open.

Julian, I've looked at the 14-24 and it IS nice... but it's big, and I don't like the filter issue with it. Besides that, I'm actually pretty happy with my 16-35.

Well, that's realitive - it is top heavy, and the aperture even with good adapter is not easily controllable.

Plus, the TS-E 17L is better too, IMO. I've owned Sigma 12-24 EX, Nikkor 14-24 F/2.8, 17-40L, EF-S 10-22, and TS-E 17L, and only the last one stayed :D.

Kind regards, Wim ;)

The thing is, both the TS-e 17 and 24 f1.4 II L have qualities that neither lens can replicate. The TS-e has the most amazingly wide lens with movements and the 24L is just superb as a low light performer. Both lenses are pretty much the best in their genres...although the 16-35IIL simply excells in it's versatility...which is there it's qualities lie. I just wish Canon would make a 16mm f1.4 lens...and I'd be all over it!

I agree that the 17 TS is better optically but, it can't do 14mm. The Sigma 12-24, 10-22, and 17-40 is not worth mentioning. ;)

Again, the Sigma (with all it's faults...just hope the mkII version is better) 12-24mm is a pretty unique lens. I get good results with mine at f13-16 but that's about the only aperture I can use mine with. Sure it's not the sharpest, but it's perfectly useable and it sharpens well in post prod. But it really is a one trick horse....why bother making in a zoom at all?

Just got back from the beach... what a trip! We left at 2AM on Saturday morning, drove 3 hours, and made it onto the beach in time to witness the sunrise :)

Here is my favorite from the spontaneous road trip. This is a pic of my gf capturing the sunrise with her 7D and 17-55:

I am sure that those of you who have ready access to a beach probably take these views for granted, but man, as a land-locked city dweller, I enjoyed each and every second out there shooting this scene, as we don't get out there all that often!

35 would probably be more useful but since I have a 60D and 5D2 I feel the 24L has more options. 24mm on full frame can be challenging and not always very practical like 35 is so thats probably why its getting a lot of use on the 60D.

We'll see, I have only had it a few months and I have had little time to shoot so I don't want to just give up. IMO its a better lens compared to the 35L. ( weather sealed, seems a bit sharper wide open ) also I really love my 50L and 35 would be to close for me so if I sell my 24 for the 35 it would probably make sense to sell the 50 for the 85. Again, I'l give it some time, the 24L II is a really nice lens and it may seem silly but considering the price of L primes I feel they all should be weather sealed.

You're telling me.

They discontinued the 5sp option for the non-Type-S models in... 2005 I think. So I was stuck with either the Auto, or cough up a few more grand for the Type-S. I didn't care for the Type-S.

And when I ruptured my Achilles 5 years ago... it was lesson enough not to get another manual transmission car until I have a garage to park more than 2 cars. My wife doesn't know how to drive a manual well.. if you catch my drift. :p Both my Achilles and my gearbox were hurting that night.

Besides, the TL's a boat. Can't say it's all that sporty nor does it handle all that great.

My 24mm hood is super loose. Gotta check it every now and then to make sure it hasn't rotated enough to get caught in the edges of shots.

This was an well known issue with the Mark I of this Lens, but has been improved with the Mark II.
Also notable is that the included 24 L II hood installs and de-installs very easily (original 24 L lens owners can appreciate this improvement)

If its realy annoying, send it in for a check, or have a closer look by yourself...
Maybe it could be done with some sanding of a few edges.

mine's not loose, but when you try to put it on, it won't go on without some pushing and wiggling, before it snaps in the track - then you can turn it.

Mine is loose. I basically can't even use it the hood during wedding receptions because it gets bounced around too much and venues are dark so I don't notice the hood on the edges of the frame. Sucks.

I actually bought a replacement hood once upon a time to see if it would be any better. It was a bit better initially... but not so much anymore.

Thanks Harm! I'm starving and those don't help!

We have the same mixer! Got mine as a gift from my MIL and love it!

Not sure how to covert sugar to honey but try this one, they're to die for!:

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix and bake at 325 for about 20 minutes (squish them down like reg peanut butter cookies with a fork to slightly flatten)

Yum!

For extra yum, try mixing in a small amount of chocolate chips! My niece is visiting next week and we're going to try those new really small reese's peanut butter cups. Can't wait!

Usually the 5D is better from what I have seen but this is a common problem with this lens, especially with 7D's. I have a looooong thread in the lens forum talking about my odyssey with Canon to get my 24L II fixed. As you can see from my signature it is long gone and was replaced with a 70-300L cause Canon could never get it working...good luck.

I won a $50 certificate to borrowlenses, thought about trying out a zoom but eh...1.4 on a wide angle just sounds like too much fun to pass up. 35mm(equivalent to that on a crop) is about as wide as I think I'll need but that'll be a part of the fun.

So I'll be trying this lens out sometime soon.

Sending it back will be the tough part.

Thanks Julian,

My wife said the 2nd one - 'too much confusion' :)

Then I notice my self on the left site of the photo - just wait for the C.S.I. genies to get my full profile out :D
