I just received my 24L II! It has a very different perspective than my 50L and 85L.
I love the fact that I have the ability to shoot at 24mm @ 1.4. The two stops I gained over my 24-70L is priceless for indoor photography, which is my primary objective now that I have a newborn daughter.
I'm sure when she starts running around my zooms will come in handy, but as of late I've been using my primes exclusively.

nice shot... love the tones.
This is definitely part of my future lenses. I think after years of searching my trinity is actually a quad in the form of 24/50/85/70-200.... currently the 28 f/1.8 will just have to do until eventually the 24LII will replace it, lol.

Very nice photos from everyone. For a long time (since March), I feel so inadequate because I can't get one sharp photo from this lens at F1.4. Tonight I decided to take off my B+W filter to see if there's a difference. I'm so glad I did...what a nice surprise!!
so now I'm curious, do you all shoot without a filter when using this lens?

I use B&W multicoated UV's with occasional ND and CP filters, I never noticed an issue with sharpness.
This is 1.4 ( on a 60d ) seems as sharp as I would expect.

@Tealtele - the first shot is amazing! I think the 24 is gonna be my next prime :)
Thanks, I've only rented it for 3 days and I'm already in love with it, giving it back tomorrow is going to be traumatic :(
On a crop it's just the perfect focal length for me, enough context to tell a story without major distortions to people's features. I also like that it's considerably smaller than the 2.8 wide angle zooms.
I know people usually say "why would you buy a 1.4 lens if you don't shoot it wide open" but wow the sharpness at 1.8 blows me away. 1.4 can give you almost a large format look close up, but if you aren't close to your subject it's mostly just too soft looking for me.
It's definitely the best "food" lens I've used because I can use it in any light, and it focuses amazingly up close. I am noticing it's incredibly hard to focus at brighter apertures when the subject isn't super close to the lens, but you can always stop down and use a flash if needed.

I can imagine, I see so many amazing 35L images on FF(check out photojournalist matt eich who almost exclusively uses his 35L+5d2 for documentary work).
The dof on that is probably twice as shallow at similar apertures. But the 24L has its advantages as well, weather sealing and newer optics. I have the 35mm f/2 and it's just not wide enough on crop for me so 24L is perfect.
Now I just need to find a way to convince the parents that I need a $1500 dollar lens.

Isn't the angle of the lens to the sun to blame instead of the UV filter?

That too, but it always looks worse with a UV filter on it, one more thing for the light to reflect off of.(the coatings are never as good as the front element's). For the same reason you'll see threads pop up asking why flares are popping up when people do night photography, filters are more likely to flare up even with just regular street lights.
I also had the hood on, that didn't help much.

Thanks guys. Bohdank, I too dig your concert photos... I have yet to shoot a human with this lens, but it sure seems to work well for you!
The church (and all of my shots actually) are single exposures - basically high ISO, large aperture and under 30 seconds or so (to keep stars from trailing). They're really a stress test for lenses as you're shooting at the max for almost everything involved.
For lighting, I generally do a bunch of different light painting techniques using anything from incandescent flashlights that are diffused, LED flashlights, gelled and gridded speedlights, glow sticks, fireworks, you name it, depending on what I'm trying to accomplish or how large the subject matter is. It's generally a guessing game for exposure as there's so many variables but I've gotten pretty good at, at least getting close and then just dialing it in from there.

Thanks Joon!
I'm learning to cope w/ the 5Dc. It's sooooo much slower than the 7D. The longer shutter lag is forcing me to work on anticipating the brief moments of expression that my son makes. Another thing I'm struggling to get used to is the ergonomics of the camera. I'm pretty sure the two cameras (gripped) are near identical in weight. Yet the grip design for the 7D makes the camera feel lighter and more secure to hold.
Oh wait, this is about the 24Lii. Yeah... 24 is rather special on FF & 7D. :D

What does it matter if it's "worth it" or not on a 7D. Assuming you don't abuse the lens, the idea/hope is that the 24Lii should outlast the 7D and many more bodies to come, no?
And I'd beg to differ. 24Lii on the 7D had been my primary go to lens for the past year, especially when shooting my little boy.

Kamameshi (釜飯) literally translates to "kettle rice" and is a traditional Japanese rice dish cooked in an iron pot. Similar to takikomi gohan, kamameshi is a type of Japanese pilaf cooked with various types of meat, seafood, and vegetables. By cooking it in an iron pot, the rice gets slightly burned at the bottom which adds a desirable flavor to the rice. It is often sold as ekiben.
Chinese cuisine also prepare rice in a similar way using a clay pot and is known in Chinese as guō fàn (鍋飯) or in Cantonese bo jai fan (煲仔飯). The cooking style is popular in Canton and Hong Kong.

I don't see what's so special of this lens in comparison with the 35 1.4L, does anybody have both ?
It's just a bit wider (but 24 is no real wide-angle either).
So the perspective is a bit difference, but in which way or for which pictures?
For example to take a close up of a ring with more background, I don't do weddings, but I don't see for which kind of purposes this should be nice. I will check the lens sample database now.
Reason that I check this lens is that I have the 16-35 2.8LI and looking for a lens with less distortion and faster and sharper corners. But there seems no other affordable alternative than the 24 1.4LII (14mm too expensive).
So i'm doubting, staying with the versatile 16-35 (wider + also nice for video) or 24 LII.
Strange is that there are only 209 lens sample pages, why not so many, maybe people don't buy this one so quickly?

mm's are so close, maybe most people have one or another, no ?
first I thought it was more an architecture lens, but it's not wide enough, so maybe a lens to put accents on subject with wider background than 35L?

I have both, I find them to be quite different. On FF the 24mm is pretty wide, where I feel that the 35mm is mild. Personally I don't use my 35mm much, I more often go for either my 24mm or 50mm.
The easiest thing for you to do is set your 16-35 at 24mm and try it out. See if you like the focal length, then imagine you have the same speed and IQ as your 35L. :)
FWIW, I also have a 16-35 II that I keep as a backup and never use. Personally I really don't care for it, especially for the price.

editing your original statement to make yourself not look like a prick doesn't wash with me.
You never simply asked "Does anyone have a 24II AND the 35L, and is the 24II that special that it is a must buy?"
Nope, you came in and slammed the 24II, without even trying it saying it wasn't anything special.

you take nothing seriously :p
I know someone that sells the 24II for $1707, is this too much second handprice or reasonable, it's about 2y old.
I could almost buy it if I sell 16-35L + 85 1.8

Not sure if thats to high or not considering I am in the US. I lucked out and got a practically new 24L II for $1200. Mine was from 2010. I would imagine about $1400 to be a fair used price.
As to being special its a lot like the 35L just wider and weather sealed. Both are pretty special lenses.
macroshot, I am in Chicago too and I plan to use my 24L + 50L this weekend at the st. Rocco feast in Chinatown.

I once owned the 35L, but returned back to vendor and decided to keep the 24LII. At least for me I really love the focal length of 24mm on FF. It's a bit wide for a general walkaround, but I happened to like and find more use with this lens rather than the 35L. Plus, I can just use 24LII on my crop body to get close to 35mm effect without so much CA.
This lens is just wide enough for my real estate jobs.

And it also takes fabulous close up portraits as well.

I use it mainly as a walkaround lens with 85L1.2II , but I love to use it for sport and mix it with FF and APSC bodies ... and no zoom can focus fast enough in the night like 24L and 85L...

But I use it also mounted on a NEX5 to shot in restaurants (I love the MFD of 24L) http://photos.corbi.eu/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=16947585&AlbumKey=gNHg6c
...it's definitely one of my 3 target dreamteam (24L1.4II+85L1.2II+200L2.0)

Nothing special. I hate outdoor concerts with natural light.

Under lights. Possibilities for more interesting stuff. Pushed ISO6400 in most cases. I left the noise in. Lighting sucked big time.
