From what I can tell so far it focuses better than my 50L and is more accurate wide open.

weirdly, 24-70's f2.8 is better though.. I think you have given me the best advice evar!

Well, as mentioned, at MFD, 24 mm and F/2.8 the 24-70L is slightly better, at MFD, 24 mm and F/4 they are equal, at F/5.6 the 24L II is better again, and at all other distances the 24L II easily beats the 24-70L.

BTW, I just checked my test photographs of reall life subjects I used for testing, and some brick wall shots: funnily enough the 24-70 only is better at MFD when the 24L II is at F/2.8 and at F/1.4, at F/2 it beats the 24-70L at F/2.8, just with slightly less DoF.

Also, the 24L II looks sharper in the OOF areas, and has slightly better bokeh, and finally, especially close-up the AoV is significantly different. At the same close-up distance (tripod used) the magnification is clearly higher with 24-70L than with 24L. And with a relatively large field curvature, the 24-70L is less good at shooting brick walls head on, there is a lot more loss of detail in the corners.

Sharpness of the 24L II generally is a little better, as is contrast (hence the more detail in OOF areas) and whether you will notice is also a matter of magnification, print wise that is.

However, where a 24L really shines, IMO, is in dimly lit scenes, where you'd use an aperture larger than F/2.8. Rendering is absolutely marvelous in these conditions, and one of the reasons why I own and use this lens (even though it is very good at landscapes too :D).

The 24L II actually provides the IQ on FF that the old 24L (Mk I) gave on APS-C, with only the centre part of the image used and at a much larger AoV of course :D. The II does this over the entire, full AoV on FF.

Do note it is only better at MFD and F/2.8. Efffectively this just means that close to MFD and F/2.8 the 24L II loses a litle bit of its bite. But only at F/2.8, and only at MFD, plus it is minor, in more ways than one.

The reason for this could well be the aspherics - aspherical lenses work best normally at specific apertures, and getting closer significantly changes the light refraction (which is why macro lenses are macro lenses - they have special corrections for close-up imaging) and what I see at F/2.8 and MFD may just be some transitional effect for one of the aspheric elements.

I've seen similar effects in other aspherics too (Sigma 50 F/1.4 at F/2.8 and F/4, Canon EF-S 15-85 which has varying levels of sharpness over the FoV; both are stil excellent lenses too :D).

A good copy is if you can nail focus on your subject of interest almost every time... Not knowing where your focus point is, I would say the sharpness of the area of focus is perfectly acceptable for your sample pic.

I had to micro adjust my 24L a little bit, but it is def. one of my fav lenses.

I think the 24 works very well on a crop, the 35 is just mid range and kinda boring. The 35 works real well on FF.

Not sure if these were hand-me-downs (have 3 older boy cousins). :lol: Amazing how new most of the clothing look. I guess you get to wear it 2-3 times and it dun fit no more. Still practically new. :D
Yeah, I usually hand down my son's stuff to my sis-n-law(two boys) but, all of my daughter's clothing is either from gifts or from my wife shopping for bargains at dept. stores. :)

A shot from yesterday.

From the 12-10-2011 lunar eclipse. The fishing boats with their lights on the surface in a light fog bank and the eclipsed moon setting behind the fog. It completely disappeared in about 30 seconds.

I'm often shooting in a cute "old town" area of town - very picturesque, but narrow sidewalks and cars parked all alongside the road - can make it hard to get a good wide frame. This lens is PERFECT for that! I'm actually surprised at how many great uses I've found for the 24. Was definitely worth the money. I'm still intrigued by the 35, but for now, the 24 and the 50 serve essentially every purpose I need down in that range.

Ahh, thanks! I am actually not the most observant person ever (which is NOT a good thing for photography, ha), so I am often kicking myself as I process shots, saying, "Dangit - why didn't I notice that?" Ah, well.

#2 is a crop, yes. And I realized after I posted that those two shots don't really illustrate the "good for narrow streets" quality of the 24, haha. So I'm including one more that I love slightly less, but that does get the idea across better ;) I was standing right at the curb for this one, practically leaning against a car.

Harm is right, those are 2 buildings under construction/renovation. The scaffolding is made of bamboos + a layer of "mesh" on the outside of the scaffold to keep debris in. The air pollution is bad in the winter months. There's no special effect filter used when photo was taken. It was actually a relatively clear day for the 2 weeks I was there.

Thanks guys! I wasn't very happy with Monument Valley. I'd planned to shoot there more extensively but with what the Navajo have done to the place, I was pretty disgusted and ended up spending much more time in the Valley of the God, just up the road, which is awesome.

It's just that for a people that are supposed to hold their land so sacred and have respect and all that, they've done nothing but destroy it. Such beautiful country is ruined by abandoned cars, washing machines, and other junk, everywhere. There's mobile homes that are right at the bases of these iconic buttes and areas. I'd never been to Monument Valley and I was very excited to see it. Once I got there and saw what they've done to it, and then have the fees to even drive down the road, I just thought it was absurd.

It was even worse in the nearby Canyon De Chelly, which honestly looked worse than most war-torn cities in Iraq. It was disgusting. Indian Gangs and their spray paint everywhere, on canyon walls, trash everywhere.. wall to wall mobile homes with the roofs being held on by old tires, drunk/stoned indians wandering around everywhere, accosting you to give them money, any time you come within contact of them.

I then went up the road about 30 miles to Valley of the Gods which is BLM land, and there was no trash, no old tires, nothing.. just beautiful scenery that actually looked much better than Monument Valley. Even though it was wide open land, with virtually no regulations, it was in pristine condition and a very special place. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there, so glad I made the decision early, to leave the Navajo properties and venture on elsewhere.

Well, I don't think the Navajos (or any "people") are better or worse than any other. With every society, there will always be the good and the less-than-desirable. I have a feeling if the local gangs of Los Angeles were given free reign in that area and that's where they reside, the Monuments would have already been tagged up from top to bottom. :lol:
