I have to agree with you man. Not to sound morally insensitive, but there are far too many Native American tribes that are just living in filth and squalor and destroying whatever land they're on.

I'm sorry to hear that MV has turned into such a dump, I too was quite interested in visiting that area one day..

These statements are a little ridiculous. You might need to open your eyes about who and where people are destroying their land and living in filth and squalor. Just like with these areas, the reality is that in many places throughout the US once you get off the beaten path things are a lot different then what you would imagine or see in the popular media. You would also be be surprised with who you would find there. Hint, its not just native tribes. You might also want to think about why those tribes are in the positions they are in. Having said all that its too bad that things are not better there.

Its not great on my 7d or 5d2. seems a little better on 5d2 surprisingly. when the focus is accurate, its very sharp. but some times it misses by a fair bit. even if I am shooting same subject, on repeat autofocus, it may change its mind on where the focus point is. From what I read in that post, it looks like the best option is to send the lens and body in for calibration.

My first copy of this lens was terribly inconsistent in focusing, missing focus repeatably 6-7 out of 10 times in test after test. In researching this lens and looking at the feedback at Canon USA, Adoroma and B&H I found this seemed to be a fairly common occurance. I returned the lens and had them send another one. The second copy is spot on but does require a little ma on the 5DmII.

^Beautiful couple...

85L was more useful than 24L as walk-around to me in Europe few weeks back.
And I didn't feel that 24-105L @ 105mm was any more 'reach' than 85mm, also 24-105L @ f/4 was bit slow in the evening.
17-40L only used very few time, and luck it's not heavy.
So I can live with 85L only for Europe / overseas trip.
I might get rip off all my zoom...

Actually, with such sunny windy weather as 10 days ago, it's like a challenge to keep the sensor clean... I just noticed in my slideshow I forgot to "clean" a few pictures from dust.

Best would even be a 3 only lengths lens (21-50-85) .. no need for intermediate length  ...

I use CPL for blue skies is my samples (I have put a 72-77mm adapter to use only 77mm CPL or Vari ND filters with 24L and 85L)
I have chosen a 180L3.5 ... because, this is one of the sharpest lens of the market, and gives a macro reach more comfortable to use than EF12 or EF25.
But still dreaming of a 200L2.0IS

After a few years, I feel the 300mm is a bit too long.. I love the IQ even if mine is a more than 20 years old lens, but 200mm is , in my case, really a good length for walkaround and sport (I use sometimes my 135L2.0 with a 1DMKIII to get a "200mm" like length and that's good for me).

agphotography
24th of January 2012 (Tue), 11:52
I do that with my 135L on the 7D. Gives about 216mm effectively.

When I am deciding on which lenses to leave at home I am often torn because sometimes the 35L is wide enough for what I want, and other times I need the 24L. I don't like to carry too many lenses at the same time, and because I shoot only with primes I don't want to take lenses that are "too close" for me. I just hate leaving the 35L at home because it's my favorite lens :D

I find I'll often pair the 24L with my 50 1.4 or the 35L with the 85 1.8, these combos typically work fairly well for me.

^^ Keep your 35. The 24 II is a fun lens to use, weather sealed too! It gives a different kind of perspective - wide, you also get abit of distortion around the edges. But 35 is a better focal length, well for me for portraits. They just need to make a 35 II to match the 24 II build quality.

No problems with it shooting in the snow (sorry repost!!)

However he is shooting with a 7D, which makes the 35L more like a 50mm lens.
I quite like my 24LII on my 7D, but I love it even more on my 5DmkII and my 1V for film.

However I use 35mm as a focal length much more often than I do 24mm.

I think I need to get 35L if I get another FF, as my 24L use most with T2i/550D...

Could a couple of you folks tell me why you went for the 24 1.4 over a wide Zoom such as the 17-40 f/4? As you can see I am a prime kinda guy, but was thinking that for a wider lens that I would use more for landscape or shots with great DOF I might be better to pick up a lens with a little more versatility. Not to mention, I wouldn't need 1.4 with the type of shots I describe. It might not be low light, might not want shallow DOF, might use tripod. Just thinking...thanks.

That is really a question only you can answer. I do often use my 24 in low light and I love it for that purpose. It's very easy to hand hold and get sharp shots in the dark. I find that it also works exceptionally well stopped down. I don't use it as often as I should, but every time I do I am glad I have it.

I suppose if I was pushed I could sell it for a 16-35 again, but I enjoy working with primes, and this is one of the best wide AF primes you can get for Canon.

Thanks Julian. Luckily, I didn't have to photoshop anyone out. Usually it's pretty crowded there. There was a lot of construction going on and nothing was really in bloom. I guess that's why it was pretty empty. Wish I had known before I made my way over there.

I hate to revisit this again, but does anyone use this 24L on a crop and can vouch for it, between it and the 35L. My original focus for getting the 35L was for a wide prime. Just seems like the 24 would suit me better maybe, but I like to hear from others who use it on a crop

It works great on my 7D. A solid walk around lens. Close to a 40mm, so not what I would call wide angle.

Functionally though I have no complaints!

Thanks guys. Think I'm gonna part with my 35L for this. I'd like a little on the wider end anyways, and the 35L is like a 50 so... it makes sense

I'm saving up for the 5Dc and I'm so close to it! I just need another $300 before I can afford one, I can survive probably only another week or so... gives me time to sort through all the photos I've taken so far and re-edit horrible ones though :)
