That's a 50... I should know... I own one :)

I owned one too... I can't understand why so many people seem to make the same mistake. Guess they don't read the whole discussion.
I posted that photo to show what the 50L looks like. That it was different from the lens we were guessing earlier in this thread.

My conclusion was that the lens were identifying was the 35L :)

Thanks, Two. A chilly night in Philly. The folks strolling with me were blown away at the images this lens can create under conditions like that. White balance nightmares aside, pretty much a straight run through Lightroom.

I just purchased a 24L II to replace my current old dependable MKI. Has anyone else done the same and felt there was minimal difference in the two? I'm hoping to have improved sharpness wide open.

jwcdds
7th of February 2010 (Sun), 02:15
Well, the mkI's pretty darn good already. So it's hard to say that the improvements of the mkII is worth the extra ~$600. That's strictly subjective. There's less distortion, less CA, and slightly sharper throughout. But it may not be $600 worth of improvements for you though.

you are using the 24L II on a 7D? pretty good results. my girlfriend and I are highly addicted to primes. We recently added a 7D to our list and we need a wider lens on it so we were thinking of the 24L II.

The 24L II would be great on my 5D mark II as well. After the 24L II, the 50L will then follow. LOL

you wanted flexibility related to macro work. the fact is, the 35L has a higher magnification which helps with macro work. you can also stack tubes to help you gain more magnification.

If you want to do near macro: 50 L with an extension tube or two. That and the 135L you already have, make a great pair for close-up and macro photography :D.

Besides my remarks above: you can get close with any lens that does fine in close-up, and I reckon it is also true that with any lens you need to get as close as you can, something a lot of people forget to do with WA lenses in the heat of the photography moment.

Kind regards, Wim

The 24L (both 1 & 2) can get up quite close to the subject. However, as noted above, it wouldn't be considered "macro" as the magnification is nowhere near 1:1.

But if you mean that you'd like to get up into the subject's grill so you can blur out the background, the 24L will let you do that very easily. :D

Yeah, this lens will allow you to do that then: wide close-up shots.

What you're describing isn't macro, and I think that's what threw off some of the responses to your question/query. On a FF, the 24mm perspective is quite wide and the lens, allowing you to get pretty darn close, can provide you with the style or PoV that you're looking for.

So I walk into Kamera Express in Rotterdam and ask if they have this lens. The guy says yes brings it out and just when I'm testing it, another guy comes around and asks where the lens is, it was the last one left and a customer was on the line asking for it. Well, it would be impolite to snatch it from my hands so i get to keep it :)

The incident made it so easy to pay for the lens without cringing about the price.

I'm debating if I want to join Club 1.2. But it's unlikely that I'll get the 50 or 85 anytime soon. :( I can't find a use for those 2 FL for the way I shoot and for what I shoot. :D I may have to jump over to the 50L archive to fancy your recent photos.

Actually the fringing is both green on the top and magenta/purple on the bottom... It's called chromatic aberration and is generally caused by wide apertures and can't really be helped all that much (as far as optics go). However, you CAN fix it pretty easily in both lightroom and photoshop (if you use them, and if you shoot raw). It's just a pull on a slider and presto, they have disappeared...

...I've never been fond of primes' "static" dynamics, but... this EF 24mm L II is a real low-light scenery bad boy.

It is exactly what I am missing on the "bottom end". I am truly impressed with its relatively low distortion and good sharpness.

Most of the shots here are simply excellent.

I would VERY grateful if anyone here can post a 50%-size f/1.4-f/2.0 shot from this lens, camera .JPG, well focused and NO other post-processing, though.

Cheers,

I have a wedding coming up in a few months. My first one. I believe I will mostly need to use the 50L and this lens, yet I don't feel I handle the 24 as I do the 50 (composition and lining is comes less natural to me). Therefore I will try to use it the coming time. Let me know what you think!

Hi Wem,

If you really feel that you don't use the 24L yet as you do the 50L, if I may make a comment, I'd like to say that with the above photographs it looks like you are using it when in tight places, and up close at that. Try to use it as you use your 50L: a little further away, trying to keep an overview at all times. In short, don't get too close if you want a similar (never the same, obviously) style as with your 50L.

BTW, this is absolutely no comment on the quality of your pics, as just as with the 50L you manage to create a 3D look, which I love. This is just an analysis of the above pics vs the 50L pics you posted in the 50L thread and the image or image style that stuck in my head as a result.

HTH, kindest regards, Wim

Hey Wim,

thanks for your advice! I will try to shoot some pictures with more distance in them and see how that works out, as getting fairly close to people was indeed what I was going for with the wide angle. I adhere to the statement "if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough" as I like the involvement of the viewer with the wide angle, but being able to shoot a bit further would make the (prime) lens a bit more versatile. So keeping my distance (and watching the fore- and backgrounds) will surely be my next challenge.

What I find the most difficult, is avoiding the converging lines. This was the task I set out for myself over the weekend. I paid serious attention to it, and failed in 80% of the cases. I am rather tall, so I need to acquire the reflex of bending my knees more often.

Again, Wim, thanks for your advice. I highly respect your opinion.

Hi Wem,

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Regarding converging lines, I think you shouldn't worry too much. It is part of the charm of the lens. However, if you do feel you are too high up there :), especially when photographing people, I'd suggest you try and sit down. That works for me most of the time.

Kind regards, Wim

Hi Wem,

I posted in reply to this post, but somehow the message seems to have gone missing between yesterday and today.

Anyway, excellent shots, and this is more or less what I meant. Notice how much these photographs have that 3D look, in a way similar to your photographs with the 50L. Similar, in a way, and completely different at the same time.

Excellent work, I just love it!

I put my 35L up for sale and before I knew it it had sold I had received my paypal money and the lens was gone. The reason for this was to purchase a 24LII. I wanted the same qualities as the 35L with a little more width. There was only one other lens that could do this.

Everywhere I called was out of stock, except for one place and ironically they were also the cheapest. Maybe this was a sign.

I did get cold feet, due to the cost, but in the end after revisiting all the alternatives I realised there wasn't any. The 24L it was.

Today I received my new lens. I don't have a 77mmUV but luckily I had a 77 - 72 adapter.

I had a bad experience with my 35L, my first copy was soft and then I had to send the other to Canon twice. I was seriously hoping this wasn't going to be the case.

Having fired a few test shots, I have been totally amazed by the quality. It's so much sharper than the 35L wide open and there is almost no difference between f1.4 and f2 - super sharp. I ran a couple of focus test shots and it performed perfectly, too.

I am very happy with this lens, yes it's expensive but so far I think it's been worth it over the 35L. Plus its weather sealed, which gives it a nice solid feel when on the camera, my other lenses have a tiny bit of play.

Oh and I'm using it on a 40D (5/7D later in the year).

I've not posted a photo here before so I hope this works:

Pretty boring shots really, all are shot wide open.

I shoot raw, so I do pp on all my photos, Usually I add a little bit of contrast and saturation, and sometime a little bit of local contrast enhancement.
I sharpen only when resizing for web.
the 24 and 35 are very fine lenses, I just like the 24 focal length a tad more than the 35 :).It all goes back to your shooting style and preference.
